Title: Time of year to talk me out of my lust for a new street glide....
Post by: spook120 on January 24, 2012, 02:51:00 PM
Same as last year; smitten by the citrus SGSE.  Current bike 06 Street glide with tman built 120 and tons of extras...with 9K on the clock.  Have 37K plus in my bike..what does the group think would be a fair trade amount so I don't do something stupid next time I go to the dealer.....  Thanks.  Let the convincing begin.  Spook

Unfortunately... a non-CVO will simply not have the value a CVO bike does, no matter how much money you have in it...

But on the other side of the coin... just DO IT!

If youre looking to be talked out of buying a new bike, this is probably the wrong place

Thanks for the reply. Owned 3 CVO bikes starting in 2003 and then decided to build my own CVO  with a motor that I wanted.  Must be getting old as I don't find myself using 130 HP at the rear wheel and kind of tired of the borzilla noise.  Probably correct not the right spot for rational thought regarding buying a new motorbike.  LOL.  Spook.

"Just do it"!

If you are asking the question, you are already there! :)

The only way to get back even some of the money you have into your bike is to sell privately to someone who wants a bike with what you have done to yours...the dealer won't care about how much you have into the motor---to them it's just another street glide....

Don't know enough about the 06..   Do you have custom paint, wheels, any mods to tank, fenders, bags?

With only 9k on the bike its practically new.    If you could get a GOOD price, then I'd maybe consider it....

If I had a built 120 in a bike with 9k, I probably wouldn't get rid of it.  JMHO.

Maybe just change to a quieter muffler system since your not using 130 hp anyway.

Stick with the 06, its a better motor.

I traded a built 2006 Street Glide for my 2011 and love it.  Didn't have quite the engine work you have but it was worth it for the suspension/chassis changes alone.

Did you broom the original 88" or do you still have it on hand to reinstall.  If so, have you thought about keeping the 120R for install in a new '12 Citrus?  That's probably what I'd do.  Does it still have the 5-speed?

If your looking to buy then you might as well pay them now...the value of yours won't go up and their's won't go down.  I went from a 385HP Boss Hoss and a 2010 SG to a a 2012 FLHTCUSE7...I plan to travel more now and considering warranty and reliablity while on the road is a big plus for me now.  IMO...I would return the bike back to stock (as much as you can) sell the parts on the forums and move on to that new CVO.

Good luck whichever way you go... :2vrolijk_09:

Sell the hot rod and get the new one! You will probably get more selling it the public. The new ones are great. You will never look back.
 Good luck.

That 12 blue SERG is calling me really bad.
I'm fighting it though.

Really!  Your asking a group of people that spend more money on a motorcycle than most people on a car to help think practical thoughts....really?  Go buy the bike, it's only money and it makes you happy just do it.  Just remember, next year there will be something new offered too!!  Ha!!!!

Just drooling over the CVO brochure and noticed that the 2012 Street Glide specs does not list ABS.  This bike does have ABS standard doesn't it as that is one of the major reason I would consider letting my 06 go.  Thanks again for the support and advice. Spook.

Let me put it this way, if I had put $37k into a motorcycle and only put 9k miles on it in 5+ years, and then went and traded it in on another $33k motorcycle and took a bath on the first one, I'd have to move in with you because my better half and CFO would throw me out of the house. ;)

Seriously, trading motorcycles these days, even Harley's, isn't anything like it was five or more years ago.  These days you will take a serious bath on the trade, and if it's a standard model with a bunch of add-ons you will be unlikely to get more than 20 cents on the dollar for all those add-ons.  Most dealers will take book trade-in value as the max and work down, not up.  If you really want to do this, definitely try to sell the bike privately versus trading it to a dealer.  To give you a rough idea, one source indicates trade in on a 2006 Street Glide is around $10k, and the best you can look to get for the major custom additions is around 20-25% of verified receipts for those items, assuming you find a dealer willing to pay any extra at all.

In my opinion, when you see something that really catches your eye, you'll know it's time. I had a 05 ultra with some chrome, nothing extravagant but it was the way I wanted the bike to look, run, sound. I wanted to upgrade because of the 6 speed, 96ci upgrades had come along but couldn't settle. I had been looking since 2009 and couldn't get my self to commit to any of them, although I liked quite a few just couldn't do it, then 2011.5 came along. I had not even dreamed of getting a CVO but when I saw the paint and IT'S A CVO, I couldn't resist. I found a way to make the $ right and said " I'll take it" before I even knew what was happening. When the time comes you'll know it.

I did it. Glad I did. The new frame makes it a huge game changer.  I figured at 55 nows the time. Im not getting any younger and I knew I could swing it.  If it feels right, go for it.  I did.   :)

Yes, the 2012 CVO Street Glides have ABS.  Below is a quote from Harley's website.

When it comes to the CVO™ Street Glide® model, "stopping power" has a double meaning. The components of our ABS are tastefully hidden within the wheel hub, so you'll still turn heads with a clean, streamlined design. More importantly, though, you get certainty in the saddle knowing your bike's going to behave when you need it.

Ok then.  Will most likely try to sell the bike privately.  I do know what you mean about taking it in the shorts from a dealer.  Or maybe I will say the hell with it and have 3 bikes in the garage! Thanks for your replies.  Spook.

That's the spirit...like the old Nike add:  "Just Do It!"  Definitely pertains in your situation. :)  I don't regret getting mine at all and the 400 W/8 speaker Stereo system kicks azz!!!  Ya only live once...enjoy it!!

One thing to keep in mind when selling a bike yourself is you loose tax credit on the trade.  Or that's the way it is in our state.

Your correct.  Just got a call from the local HD dealer and he tells me he isn't so sure that he will get a citrus SG.... WTF! All this agonizing and now maybe not available.  I guess everything happens for a reason.  I will keep you posted.  Thanks for all the input.  Going to go polish MY street glide....  Spook.

What I was going to say is that I  :nixweiss: :nixweiss: :nixweiss: really hate myself right now....just started my 120 and have to say it still gives me shivers.  Been reading some of the performance stuff on the 110 and realize I do NOT want to go down that road again! Biggest fear at the moment is that I will have severe sellers remorse when I hand over the keys of my current bike...and even though I could afford to do so, it does not make sense to keep the 06 if I spring for the 2012.  Problem is I will not be able to even hear that 110 idle much less take if for a test ride if I trade/sell my bike.  I know I am acting like a little girl, but I do get attached to my toys.  So I think I am in for a rather sleepless night (dealer called and said that with a grand down he would find me a citrus bike) but needs the money end of month.... Crap.  Hate to make a decision that I will regret as that happened with the last 2 CVO bikes I bought...giving up bikes that ran way better than the new ride.  Ok. Done whining.  Going out in the garage to sit on my bike. Spook.

It's getting around to the time where this thread needs to end.  Your a big boy, there's bikes out there if you want one, sounds to me like your looking for something to talk about which is OK  :2vrolijk_21:  that's what were here for, but it doesn't sound like your really looking to buy a new bike.  May as well start bragging about your 120 and tell us about that!
