Winter Storage
« on: October 27, 2008, 09:25:51 AM »

If you are stuck parking the bike for up to 5 months while the road salt is flying, what does everybody do to the bike before putting it to bed? Moving south not an option at this time. Thanks

Wash and wax, change the fluids, put on a battery tender, jack it off the floor and cover it w/ something that breathes. Sux don't it. Another year and I'm outta here.

Fill your tank, change your oil & filter, put Seafoam in the gas tank AND the oil tank, run your bike awhile to make sure everything has circulated, put a battery tender on it, put it up on a lift, cover it, then kiss it goodnight until March (if you live in snow country).. :(

Oh yeah, Roadking, that Seafoam is some majic sauce alright! Thanks for reminding me. Usually use it first tank in spring to get things going right.

Roads might be salty but nothing stops you from opening the garage door, get the bike out in the driveway and let it run for a while.  Make sure you have CO2 detector in garage (install about 12-24" up from floor).
I usually get 4-5 rides in Dec./Jan. and 1-2 in Feb./March.  Then again, we don't as much snow as you guys.   ::)

Before I went through all that, I'd ride it down to Jorge in sunny Miami, hand him the keys and say see you next spring. :2vrolijk_21: ;D

Every New Years Day for the past 20 something years we do "The Burrito Run" from Woodside, CA to Gilroy, CA.  Depending upon the weather, there's anywhere from 50 to 800 bikes...

New FXDSE winter storage
« Reply #14 on: October 30, 2008, 07:58:35 PM »

Just got 2008 FXDSE 2 weeks ago and estimate having about 5-600 miles on it before storage.
Would you change oil before storage with those miles or wait for 1000 miles next season?
Thanks

Both
If it was mine!

My SEUC has 2750 miles and I changed it at 1000 then 2000 and will again at 4000 and will schedule it to be done on the even numbers.

Change the oil and filter in the fall to get the dirty oil out.  And unless you store in a fully heated area - change the oil and filter in the spring before your first ride to get the condensation out...   :2vrolijk_21:

You are a little out of control.
I would speculate bad cases.
I would also suspect dOOd may be installing hinges.
But I have no concrete evidence to bolster the validity of my statement.
But it's good for padding my post count anyway!
Cool HUH?

Question....  what is winter and and how do you put it in storage?????   :P  Here in San Diego, there may be a total of 14 days throughout the year that is not rideable.  I would say I feel your pain but I really can't....too busy riding.

Sad to say did all the winter prep for the SEEG today just before noon.  Took off the unheated tan seat and put on the heated black seat.  Oh, and it's 60s or better for at least the next week here.

You are a little out of control.
I would speculate bad cases.
I would also suspect dOOd may be installing hinges.
But I have no concrete evidence to bolster the validity of my statement.
But it's good for padding my post count anyway!
Cool HUH?

Screw that.  Doing a little.  Just no long hauls.  Hardest parts are getting on and off.  Can always put it on the kickstand and fall off.

I'm still running the A/C here in SoCal. I keep hoping it'll cool off some. Seems like the warmest fall we've had since I moved here in Jan 98.

Back to the topic at hand, when I lived in Maine, I never put my bike up for the winter. I'd leave it in the garage with a trickle charger on the battery and on sunny days when the roads were bare I'd take slow putts around the neighborhood. Of course that meant a couple hours of cleaning when I got home, but that was fine too. I've never been a fan of pulling the battery, covering the bike up and forgetting about it for four months.

Winter storage.  This whole concept just baffles me.   ;D  It's 71 degrees today.  Been riding the cleaned up Purple Haze........in jeans and a T-shirt.  If only it could stay this way year 'round..........................
