Securing your investment
« on: February 04, 2006, 01:07:02 PM »

Maybe I am being a little too concerned, causious, but what do some of you do to secure your bike? We plan on being on the road alot again this year and I am a little worried about this. In the past I would lock the bikes at rotors, steering etc, but that was a '98 Softail Springer or '99 EG Ultra, I could replace these if stolen, but not a CUSE! Lojack now offers motorcycle units, any experience? We often ride alone so locking to other bikes is not often available. Just looking for some ideas.  Wrongway

Well, I disk lock both wheels, lock the fork, set the alarm, turn on the alarm pager and load the 9mm Glock. That pretty well takes care of it.   ;D

If the thief can get past all that, I just call my insurance agent and the boys in blue.

Sometimes you cant do enough, if they want it they WILL get it. If they dont take the bike they will take the parts they want, bags-tour pack-even fairings etc..  The best thing is to always park it where it can be seen by you or someone you trust. A 9mm is a good thing too.

I think on parking where you can see the bike is the best idea, but I have not rode out west in a few years.
When I am traveling long distance I try to stay in places that allow me window or ground level eye contact with my bike.

Hi Wrongway,
All of the above advice is good. [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]
To answer your question about Lojack it does have drawbacks in that it is not a nationwide locator system like Onstar for cars and trucks. If everywhere you usally ride is covered by the Lojack then fine but if you do lots of traveling or the coverage area is small in your area and your bike can quickly be transported out of range the system is not doing you any good. You also have to depend on the local police department having a working Lojack reciever car on the street and it is manned by a trained officer in order to track down your bike. Many police departments are getting away from Lojack since Onstar is becoming more popular and you don't need specialy equiped cars or trained officers.
You may want to check the Viper Alarm website ,they have a GPS based locator system for cars and maybe with some modification that system could be installed on a bike?
With the Viper system if the alarm is triggered it sends a message to your cell phone or home computer so you have unlimited range compaired to a regular alarm pager. You can also disable the vehicle yourself as well as track it's movement yourself.
I hope this helps you some.

I park mine rite infront of my door or in front of the lobby where it can be seen from someone at the desk. 5 bucks to the person on duty goes along way. I've went up and check in on them. I've also done the Radio Shack motion detector, its really touchy, tuck it under the tour pack back rest.

best thing i bought is a $25 generic cover, it packs up small and any would be thief has to think before they go lookin under there, they have no idea what kind of bike it is, and no idea what kind of security is on. I use that and the factory security system. oh yea if you can find a cheap cover that says Honda all the better.

I honestly don't ride a lot just around town.  So a good chunk of the miles the bike gets are on road trips and tend to see it parked quite a few nights at motels that way.  I generally look for the side-of-the-road type one or two story old motels that look like they've been there since the 50s or 60s.  They're often cheap and I just like the character of the places too.  A good benefit is there is usually little problem getting a ground floor room with a big window you can park right in front of.

If things look anything other than normal I'll roll the bike up on the sidewalk, under the canopy that is usually there, and park in right in front of the window.  Being the close to the room I'd guess most would-be problem children would be even more concerned about the noise and catching the attention of someone inside the room.

If for whatever reason the parking lot seems to make me actually concerned; screw it.  Most motels have wide doors.  Just roll the bastard inside.  That nasty old raggedy carpet has seen far worse than my two tires are ever going to do to it.  I haven't done this very often over the years.  But there's been probably half a dozen times that my bike has slept inside.

THE BEST SECURITY METHOD I USE IS PARK IT AS CLOSE AS POSSIBLE TO YOUR ROOM & RUN SOME 10LB FISHING LINE INSIDE THE ROOM & TIE IT OFF TO A LAMP. IF THE LAMP FALLS OFF THE TABLE, ALL HELL WILL BREAK LOOSE. [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

These last two posts reminded me of one of the funniest things I ever saw on a motorcycle.   A long time ago, I was probably 22 or so, was out with a guy I'd been riding with for a few days.  We'd met at a truck stop someplace out west and just pounded miles together for a few days.

One night we stopped at a wide spot with a clean field and threw down some blankets.  This guy was a little nutty that something or somone would happen to his bike while he was asleep.  So he tied a string from the bike to his big toe.

We had enough money for quite some several beers and perhaps other embellishments that night.  Sometime during the middle of the night something startled this guy and he jumps up out of a sound sleep jumps on his bike and roars off screaming something about Indians.  Just a little bit down the hill this string gets caught up in the chain or sprocket and nearly yanks the guy's toe off.  He and the bike crash, his big toe is pointed at like 90 degrees to the rest of his foot, and he's sitting there wrapped up in this old beat up bike and stupid looking poncho still screaming to watch out for the Indians while he's holding his toe and rocking back and forth in the dirt.

Ask about a handicapped room...wider door and more room inside...pull the bike right in!

If you can't do that, find something firmly put into the ground or some sort of post and chain it up.  This may not stop the thieves, but it sure slows 'em down...this is where the 9 mm comes in handy!

I like the "Cobra link". Just installed the alarm pager on my SE. Try not to park to far away from where I'm sleeping. But like someone already posted "If they want it bad enough they'll get it". But with any luck I'll be able to leave a tatoo. ;D

I put LoJack on mine.  If it goes at least the dicks might get caught.  Oh and when I ride I take along a buddy.

Thieves are creative and determined. Locks, alarms, heavy chains, they're just minor roadblocks to the guy who is set on taking your ride. Big guns are your best bet. Here's mine. Just the sight of it makes big men drop. [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

;D no good if not accessable, huh?  I've got the CAR and it's still too big to pack on a scooter.  Good for the boat, though.  [smiley=rifle.gif] har!  spyder

Lub dem guns.  When I was knee high to a grasshopper (1970) I was in the local Triumph shop picking up my first new bike a 650 Tiger (since I couldn't afford a Harley back then) hell the Tiger was $1150.00 and I couldn't afford the Bonneville that was $1275.00.  My buddy bought a Sportster at $2000.00.

Anyway, in comes a guy that had just riden across the country.  Remember, 1970 was still a time bikers weren't everyone's favorite guys.  He has a scabard on the front fork with a 30-30 in it.  He said he didn't have one bit of trouble on the entire ride.

Maybe if that assault unit was stickin' out of the tour pack it would be just the deterrant one needs.  Although I imagine the granola cruchers would have a fit nowadays. [smiley=rifle.gif]

How many of you seen that commercial of that guy stealing a car and that monkey comes out of the trunk and clubs him and throws him over the bridge. I ordered one of them and will be mounted in King Tour Pak! [smiley=huepfenlol2.gif]
