X2 on stainless.  Chrome is going to rust in the bolt/screw holes.  If the stainless doesn't shine enough, polish the screwheads with metal polish using a Dremel.

I used the Diamond Engineering high polished SS on my last bike.  4 years later they were still looking fantastic when I sold the bike.  As someone told me, they are harder than the stock bolts, be careful installing and don't over torque as they will quickly damage the threads on the bike.

I've been working for a manufacturere of S.S. products for over 30 years.

YES! S.S. Will Rust.

The quality and it's ability to rust is highly dependent of the grade of the S.S.

Here's a very basic way to judge the quality. If a magnet will stick to it don't buy it. Example: 400 Series S.S. that is very widely used and will stick to a magnet.

Also keep in mind that the grooves in the polish of S.S. parts allow build up of "crap - free iron" that contains minerals that will rust and create the appearance that the "S.S" is rusting. Minerals are is water, on the road surface etc..

Remember, if it sticks to a magnet Don't Buy It!

Try a "builders' kit" from Gardner Wescott.  Many Have dealers carry them.  Dennis Kirk has them.

My local Ace Hardware carries a large selection of both SS and Chrome bolts.  Be careful over tightening SS as the threads will gall easily under high torque and not be able to get them apart.  If you must use stainless you may want a touch of anti-sieze on the threads or use a gall resistant SS like Galtough or Nitronic (brand names).  Also some grades of SS are prone to something known as crevice corrosion where threads will rust if damp.

Be careful buying ss bolts from a hardware store, they are more than likely a cheap grade. I always look for grade 8 and ALWAYS use never seeze or a locktite on the threads especially in aluminum. You will thank yourself the next time you remove them.

Care to elaborate on that?

Doesn't the content of the materials e.g. chromium, nickel, molybdenum and carbon grade the SS, not whether a magnet will stick or it will rust?

The magnet test really doesn't give the answer someone needs, whether looking for bolts and screws or fillet knives.
That and chinese stainless is nowhere near the quality of US stainless products.
