WHY or "Y" Cracked!?!?!?
« on: August 27, 2004, 06:50:18 AM »

OK, it's been a beautiful week up here in southern New England.  Everyday I ride to work and then take the Loooooooong way home.  Also each day, I would take a ride around ocean drive in Newport, RI, stop at the Atlantic Beach Club for Beer and Bikinis...but back to the story.

We all talk about how the Bikes run Hot and mine is no exception.  This week, with all the stop and go in downtown Newport it was especially noticeable on the underside of my right leg.  It did seem warmer than usual but I just wrote that off to the stop and go traffic.

Well, this morning I start the bike and as I was changing glasses, they are in the right saddlebag guard bag, I felt warm air blowing on my hand.  I shut down the bike.  My first instinct was to believe that the nuts had backed out.  But upon closer examination, the "Y" piece of exhaust has a crack in it...not on a weld, right in the middle.  Well that explains the heat on my leg.  So I push it to the side and take the Deuce to work...forgetting to change keys, dam I wish they were keyed the same!

Will be calling the Dealer this morning...hope I can put a patch on so that I can ride it to the shop.  I am at about 4600 miles so I might have them do the 5K service....and they have my replacement front wheel in from the factory.

Had a buddy who rides a road glide have the same problem, they said in was very rare to break the y pipe. They welded it up so he could ride then ordered a replacement part.

Had a '97 Ultra that did the same thing.  [smiley=nixweiss.gif] I had a spare from my SERK, 2-into-1 now, will check aqnd see if I still have it.  It's from an '02 SERK but should work if your interested?

Let me know

Glave thanks but is a warrantee issue and for 2 years since it is an '04. [smiley=beerchug.gif]

I had a '97 RK that broke on the weld in the same location, the replacement piece was much beefier...but then again, the one on the seeg looks pretty solid...everywhere except the crack. [smiley=oops.gif]

I will take a pic when I get home.

mr_magoo,

Your dealer may or may not want to admit to you, the breaking of the "Y" pipe has been a common occurence for quite a long time.

I cured this by going to 2:1 V&H Pro Pipe and just put on V&H True Dual Header set up with V&H Oval Slip Ons, will see hiw it runs and sounds.

Bill, from what I understand, geezerglide is right.  The Electra Glide Garage site has many reports of this happening so, unfortunately, I don't think it is all that uncommon.  Also like geezerglide suggests, if mine breaks I plan use the opportunity to try a good 2-into-1 or true dual setup.

As a side note, I'm pretty sure a locksmith could key your SED to match your SEEG.  May mean a trip to the dealer to pull the ignition for you, but then again, maybe it's not too hard to do yourself on the Deuce.  Don't key the SEEG to match the SED, however, you'd be pulling locks out for the rest of the riding season, LOL! (Ignition, 2 saddlebags, tour-pak!)

Maybe the next time it cracks I will try a 2-1 for now, I am off to the shop...will put a few layers of foil to deflect the heat.
