Handlebars for 14 Limited
« on: January 22, 2014, 02:57:09 PM »

Have always wanted to change the stock HD bars to the Wild I 575's. Finally decided to do it on my 14. Called to order and was bummed to find out that the Wild ones don't fit the 14 Limited due to the new fairing design and the angle being too sharp for.
Does anyone have an option for a 10 inch bar with similar specs  to the 575's  Looked at pics of the 578's, which are I think 12" but I don't want to go that high.

Nothing HD has had in the past would work. I'm looking for the same angles, etc, just two inches taller.

My mistake. 10" is higher than I want. Looking for similar dimensions to the 575's.

Why not just get the 575's?

WO says 575's will not fit the new fairing.  Something to do with the bend dimensions.  Not sure why 575's do not fit but 578's do?

I know WO Inc say 575s won't fit, but my '09 with 575's is sitting in my garage next to my friend's '14 FLHTK for the winter, and I think 575s would fit.  Somebody should try it!

Why did you move your number plate back down to the bottom, Ruud?

Is that the MoCo Garmin mount that goes on the switch housing screws?  Did you have it on the standard bars, and does the Garmin hide any of the gauges with the standard bars?

The guy from WO said it was due to the new fairing being wider and the WO bars, due to the 1&1/4" thickness,  couldn't be bent that much. Maybe someone with two bikes together could measure the difference between the new fairing and the old one.

Yes, I spoke to them too, (by email) and got the same story.

It's pretty impossible to be certain by measuring, but I've done my best, and I still thing 575s could fit.  At worst, a little relieving at the ege of the holes where the bars come through, but I reckon they'd fit.  Removing the bars on a '14 is so easy, that a trial fit could be done easily if someone had a set of 575s to hand.

Think is a big word !  I think I'll wait for someone else to be a ginea pig. Mine are on hold for a time anyway. Just bought my Daughter a car, my son wrecked his, spend $ 650 to repair my zero turn mower that my son wore out last summer mowing yards, $ 450 for new pool pump, and insurance for two teenagers, one with two wrecks, is killing my cashflow.

Yes, I can understand that, GC!  (non stop rain since October means I have a big roof repair  bill - and I do mean big - so I too am feeling the pinch!)

I wish somebody would try it so we know for sure if there really is a problem that's not easily surmountable....  It all looks possible to me though.

I do too since from the sound of it the guys at WO don't plan to do anything. Given the popularity of the 14's though they might want to rethink that.

The biggest problem is that when I conversed with them via email, they were very vague about why there was an issue, and I didn't get a response beyond that when I asked for clarification. I guess they figured if I only wanted 575s for a 14 I wasn't going to continue to be a customer, so why waste time replying further.  As I see it, the worst case would be having to enlarge the opening in the new fairing very slightly, and I'd be happy to do that, but till someone tries it, we are going to be completely in the dark.   :(

We must of talked to the same guy. Their customer service sucks. He acted like I was an idiot for asking why the bars wouldn't fit a 14 and then when I asked when some might be available he said they wont.  Really ?

Yup, sounds as if it must have been the same guy, I also felt I was being treated as dumb.   I did have a poor experience with them before - bought a set of 575s, brand new, off ebay. They were supposed to have the notches for TBW, but when they arrived they didn't.  I tried to get them to tell me the dimensions to modify them and they point blank refused to tell me. (I went ahead and did it anyway...)

Not sure if this will help you but the Bat Wing Reduced Reach Handlebar-56176-08 will fit the 2014 CVO Limited. I just had them installed and they fit perfectly with no additional part required.

I found it to be too much. Try a bike with them on, to me it felt like I was pushing a wheel barrow.

Dealer do the install for you? Any issues during your install with new fairing design? Were you able to use all the stock cables too?

I actually rode down to the Wild 1's location and talked to John about the bars.  The 575's are also what I wanted and he showed me why they won't fit the 14s.  The 575's don't have the additional bend, I'll call forward for lack of a better term (as they come out of the fairing they are coming slightly toward the rider and then bend into an upward direction), and they will hit the fairing on the 14s.  He then got a pair of 578's which are 10" (not 12" like some have said here) and they have the forward bend. and with them rolled back just a bit toward the rider they are very similar to the 575's.  The 578s are just a little taller but my hands will still be below the top of the fairing...which is what I want.  I got the 578s from Direct Cycle Parts (also close to home) for much less than Wild 1's price and will be having them installed very soon.  I'll post pics.

Dealer did the installation. No issues at all. Stock cables and wiring.

Are they drilled for internal wiring, cvosjoe?

If your looking for a custom awesome looking bar. Take a look at the vindikta bars (vindikta.com). He has bars that fit the 2014's as well. They look a lot like the yaffe bagger bars but are 1.5 diameter vs 1.25. Gives you a one of a kind look that not everyone will have. And Joe is an amazing guy to work with. Cheaper than yaffe bars too.

It goes to the mechanic on Sunday the 6th.  He got busy with bikes for the Arizona bike week and asked if I could wait a couple weeks.  No problem as he is a top notch mechanic.  He'll have it a week or less and I'll post the pics as soon as I get it home!!

Why did you move your number plate back down to the bottom, Ruud?

Is that the MoCo Garmin mount that goes on the switch housing screws?  Did you have it on the standard bars, and does the Garmin hide any of the gauges with the standard bars?

Jim

Sorry little late.

I didn't move the nummer plate this is the way the HDI models for Europe are build.

The Moco Garmin mount does fit on standard bars en didn't hide the gauges. I still use the Garmin so i can use the aftermarket Map for motorroutes

Ok fellas, got it home from the mechanic.  The Wild 1 578 is just below the top of the fairing and just inside of the outside edges.  The front shots are from about 45* angles and the rear is standing right behind the bike.  Rode about 45 miles home last night and they feel GREAT!!!  Sorry for the pic quality but the sun is blazingly bright here today.  Pics below....

I know that they are built like that (As I'm in Europe, and I've had five!  ;D)  What made me ask is in the picture in this thread, you have the number plate down there, but in your earlier photos in another thread you had it in the US position!  (You were looking for the medallion, remember?)

In all honesty I was a little apprehensive to go with the 578s.  I could not find a bike that had them on it and I had no way to gauge the feel or height.  That said, the mechanic I took it to said I'd like them and they would offer what I wanted out of the handlebars...a little highter and a little closer to me.  He was right and the feel soooooooooo  goooooooood!!!!

Thanks Ernie. It's a bit hard to tell from the WO website exactly how they differ from 575s.  I've had 575s on my last three bikes, but would like something a little narrower (575s are wide so a real stretch on full lock) and about 2" further back, same wrist angle, and no higher.  How close would you say they come to that?

If you want narrower bars the 578s are not the bar for you.   If my memory serves me correctly, the 578s bar is 36" wide.  I detailed in my post earlier in the thread why the 575s will not work on the 14s.  That was the bar I wanted but a no go.  I looked at some Yaffe bars too but I like the fatter bar look as it matches my belly better!!!!!

You're right - the 578 is 2" wider than the 575.  :(  I have to say that I STILL think the 575 can be made to fit though....

I bought the 578's, just trying to find time to put them on. How long did it take your guy to install thwm. Did the oem wires and lines fit or were they extended?  I like the look of them on your bike. Thanks for being the first to try it and congrats on finding a bar that fits you.

The stock hydraulic clutch and front brake hoses were changed out for some longer ones.  The wiring was extended 3-4" just in case I didn't like these and ever wanted to change to a 12" bar.  Now that I have about 750 miles on these bars I like them....a lot and don't plan on any changes.

Just took a 800+ mile trip to Laughlin River Run and the bars felt great.  Still low enough and below the top edge of the fairing to block the majority of the wind, arm position is very comfy.  I may roll back just 1" to make them absolutely perfect.

Hey Ernie, had the Harley Pullbacks on my last ultra, they are 2 inches wider and back to the rider 2 inches, how do your bars compare to the Harley Pullbacks?
And about how much did the dealer charge for the install?

Is it necessary to lengthen the break, clutch and wiring to install the 578's or did you make the change just in case a taller bar was in your future plans?

Having never felt the HD bars ti is hard to say.  The width sounds about the same but I have no idea if the grip degree angles are even close.  The 578's can be rolled forward toward the fairing or back toward the rider so there is some play there.  As they currently sit on the bike I'd say they are about 1" closer to me.  Comfy in that position but may roll them back 1 more inch just to see if I like them better.

I had my indy do the install.  He is also a 20 years HD Master and has a side business he runs out of the garage/shop at his house.  Total install with bars, extended clutch and brake lines, extended wiring and his labor was right at $900.  The braided lines were made to match the stock stock ones and were more expensive than a std braided line.

Mechanic said the stock lines were a little to short.  He said he could have routed them differently and they would have just made it but would have been at the edge of length with no extra.  I wanted to retain the stock routing so I had him order the longer ones.  I didn't ask about the wiring because I wanted it extended anyway in case I wanted to go with a 12" bar.

Let us know of any wiring needs or switching any cables, and any problems you run into, I'll be asking a friend to do mine for me, he was a Harley mech, and about how long you took on the install.

Yep, update....

The bars cannot be installed without the wire extensions. The hydraulic lines are fine and just need to be rerouted a touch.

It's possible to take the connectors that need wire extensions loose from the panel that they are connected to, to get them to be able to connect. But, it would make re-installing the inner fairing very, very difficult and not worth the chance of scratching it up while trying to get the connectors plugged in.

I've had Rebecca at Tri City send me the wire connectors 12" and will be finishing up the install this afternoon. I'll post the full install time when I get a chance but it's going to be approx. 3 1/2 hours at a very leisurely pace. Wires pulled through the bars very easily and are long enough that the extensions can be added after the bars are attached.

The shop that had made a appointment to get mine done let the bike sit for 2 days and told me it could be 1 to 2 weeks, I went and picked it up. 2 friends that have swapped bars on their Ultra's are going to help me do it. Hopefully this weekend.

Derby, that just sucks.  That, in part, is why I had my indy do the install for me.  Good luck with your install.

Update #2

Hit a snag. Not a biggie but you should be prepared. Consider the thickness of the new bars compared to the stock bars. I was able to get the inner fairing installed fine but the dash panel (at the fork lock) has to be relieved in order to re-install with the thicker bars. Again no biggie and only added about 20 minutes to get the dash sanded nicely and installed. A Dremel tool with the sanding drum is all that's needed. The plastic sands fast so be careful and don't be too aggressive with it.
The inner fairing hits the bars also, not really hurting anything but I will want it clearanced. I will go back and sand the inner fairing at another time to clearance it.

I know all these will fit a touch different on each individual bike but I don't know how anyone was able to install the dash panel without clearancing it first. The screw holes were off by at least a quarter inch. If it was forced into place it will only be a matter of time before the screw holes break out and or the panel cracks. If the holes were made bigger there would not be any material left at the edge and will probably still crack.

You have to do that on a pre 14 as well with 1 1/4" or bigger bars.

I guess I got lucky.  I put 575s on my 12 CVO SG and my 09 SG.  Fit was not a problem.  I'm pretty sure they were 1 1/4".  I just picked up my 14 CVO Limited yesterday.  From reading this thread, I may hold off a little before changing the bars on it.

There's 2 rubber grommets in the ignition cover that won't fit over bigger bars I had to pull them off and then dremel the small plastic risers off the back side.

Yes, the rubber grommets on the fairing cap were right up against the new bars, but the cap still fit.  I didn't have to trim anything to put it back together and the cap didn't seem to be stressed at all.  Maybe it has something to do with the angle of the bars.

Eqcons, I know you had yours done by someone else. Did they have to get longer hydraulic lines and wires to do the job. How much time did they quote you for labor.

No, did them myself, Wayne.  No hydraulic lines or wiring was required.

About 4 hours.  It's not difficult - I followed the instructions (with pics) on the HDForums site http://www.hdforums.com/forum/new-rushmore-models/941239-installing-2-pullback-bars-flhtk-pics-included.html

I know on previous bars they suggested cutting a little of the end off the bar on the left side to accommodate the heated grip switch.  Did you have to do that.

Installed  LaChoppers 10". Took about 5 hours.  Namz 4" extension kit. Stock break and clutch lines.  Could have installed the 12" and still used the stock lines.

Rick, the are the 10" bagger twin peak ape, I ordered them from West End Motorsports.   This is the second bike I installed them on and really like the feel and position. They relieve my lower back stress a a lot.
FYI if you are going to install yourself be ready to eliminate the TBW and heated grip connectors.  They will not pass through the mitered corner.  I learned my lesson on the first bike a year ago.....

Just about to install my Chubby 578 bars, did anyone who has installed the 578 bars have to cut a bit off off the left side bar end?
They say on the wild1 website you may need to cut 3/8" off left side so it butts up to where the bar broadens to 1 1/4".

I had the dealer install 578s on 13 CVO ultra last year and when I went to test fit for angle I noticed a gap on the left side that didn't look right. I had pointed out to them before the install that WO said cutting the left side may be necessary. The pulled it back apart to cut it for me. No more gap.

Thanks, Yes just got a confirmation email from Wild1.
You do need to cut off 3/8" off left side if using HD heated grips.

I'd try it first..... As I say, I've done several sets of 575s, all using Harley heated grips, and never had to cut them.  Maybe the 578 is different, but I can't see why it would be.

Yep all done and installed, took me about 6 hours taking my time.
Didn't need to take ignition off and also left the dash panel under ignition in loosely. I used 4: namz cable extensions, standard brake & clutch lines are fine, just had to release some cable ties.
Had to cut 3/8" off the left side for it to butt up, the 578's must be different.
They are nice Fat looking Bars, I have leaned them back to get a closer reach as I am a short ass! Will test them out on a  3 hour trip tomorrow.

Looks good!   I thought the 578s too tall for my liking - would have gone with 575s but they don't fit the 14/15 models, so went with the Harley 2" pullback ones.  I'm only 5' 5½" so I'd still like bars that came another inch further back so I could sit straight instead of leaning forward.  Never found the perfect bar yet....

Comfort would be a huge bonus, but knowing me as I do, every time I looked at my bike, I know I'd think the bars didn't look good.  My idea bar would have the rise and wrist angle of W1 575s, but be 2" narrower, with 2" more pullback.  Sadly, that bar does not exist!

Well I have put in a little over 3 hours riding with the 578's and at this stage I don't think I will have them on for long! :(

I am 5'6" and I find the bars too wide and I am still reaching a little, not as much as the stock bars but my shoulders were aching with the extra width/height.

It might be an adjustment period so I will roll the bars back a little more to get the closer and give it several more hours.

These bars are considerably wider than stock.

Pretty much all aftermarket bars are wider. Before you pull them PLEASE rotate them backwards. You would be surprised how much an inch toward you can make or break the bars. I hated my 13's when I put them on, rolled them back about 1 to 1.5 inches and I absolutely LOVE them.

I am 5-6 also, pull the bars back and you will feel a huge difference. I have ridden with all types of bars on a lot of different types of bikes and find these to be one of the most comfortable. Perfect for me.

Yep, that was one of my big gripes with 575s. Too wide. A slow turn on full lock with my little arms was a nightmare. But they were the best I could get.  You might like the HD pullbacks a bit more though - normal width, with 2" back, but as I've said elsewhere, still not close enough to me.  Problem on the 14s and 15s is that if you rotate the bars back much, there's contact with the tank on lock.  :(

I rotated the 578"s back until they just cleared the tank, your correct Jesse, much more comfortable. Still the width issue on slow turns, but once your aware of it its a no brainer.

Well, I started this thread 10 months ago. Never thought I would have so much trouble picking a set of bars, but the 14 models presented a new set of challenges. Today I ordered a set of Todd Cycles 8 inch bagger bars,  which say they are specifically made to fit the 14's with TBW and heated grips. But, since I'm still waffling, and I love the look of the 10 in LA chopper bars, I ordered a set of them also. Will return one set after choosing. I think the width will be the issue. Wish some of the taller bars weren't so wide, but after sitting on a few bikes with similar bars, I think I'll like them OK. Mainly hoping to get rid of the neck pain on my 60 year old neck.

I'm still not delighted with the MoCo 2" pullback bars, but I've not found anything better that fits.  Apes look ridiculous on a Glide (in my opinion of course) and I think all bars with sharp corners are fuglier than a big bag of fugly things marked "v. fugly" - sorry GC!  Bars should have curves, not pointy bits!  ;)

I think the bar that's my ideal is just not made.  A 1¼" bar with the same rise and wrist angle as the WO575, but 2" more pullback, and 2" narrower.  But I might as well be asking for the moon....  :(

Well I actually agree with you. When I started my search, I absolutely did not want the sharp angles, but like you, I just couldn't find the height and angle that I wanted, so I changed my game plan to concentrate more on height and wrist angle. That's why I ended up with this style. Plus, there's room for a cup holder. :2vrolijk_21:

:)  I just couldn't stand to look at my bike with such fugly bars on. I might be comfortable, but I'd probably be masked so folks wouldn't know who they were laughing at, and I'd probably fall off because I kept looking at the bars!  ;D

Hey to each his own right? I hope they make the bars you need. There are a few custom bar makers. Have you tried that route?

Yes, one man's neat is another man's fugly, Jesse.   :bananarock:

Not so easy to look at things like custom bar makers from this side of the pond.  :(

You sir are in a bit of a pickle I'm afraid. I rode a bike with Harley 2" pullbacks, yuk! Felt like I was pushing a wheel barrow!

The older 2" pullbacks were like that, but the current ones better.  Maybe it was the older ones you tried?    It's my Holy Grail, the ideal bar.  (And just about as much chance of finding it!)

Have any of you guys who have swapped bars yourself used the extended twist grip sensor pn 32310-08 that eliminates the green connector plug?

No, wasn't aware of its existence!  But what's the advantage...?

No, wasn't aware of its existence!  But what's the advantage...?

It eliminates the green plug inside the bars, which is notorious for being damaged during the often rough process of fishing the wires internally.
