Thinking Of Trading
« on: March 23, 2019, 01:33:17 PM »

Looking for some opinions. I’m thinking of trading my 16 CVO Limited with 8600 miles for a new 19 SG CVO. I love my current ride but it’s a beast in the weight department and a little tall in the saddle. I know that I can remove the tour pack and change the seat to lower height to help. But the paint (grey/silver) really floats my boat. Dealer is willing to give my 25K for my bike and throw in a couple of goodies. What you do?

If it was me it would all depend on if I had a clear title to the 16, if I didn’t then I would want to know how much I’m rolling over in negative equity which is just another term for debt. That’s me though.

$25,000 is a good trade price but that also depends on what he is charging for the new bike. If it's MSRP then it's a crap deal.

Buying a recreational vehicle is usually a decision made on emotion and not financial sense. If you do the math you would probably decide it wasn't smart to pay tens of thousands of dollars just for a few less miles and new paint etc. Think if some shop said "I can take off your tour pak, put on a lower seat and spray it with grey paint for XYZ amount of dollars"....would you do it? Could that money be better spent on family things or your retirement?
All that being said , if you can truly afford it , you probably won't be happy until you buy the bike of your current dreams and as many say you can't take it with you and life is short....
Trading in a vehicle may not get you top dollar but cuts out a lot of time and hassle of selling on your own especially in this market now.

The tour pack, bc of its height above the bike, makes a lot of difference to that top heavy feel of the Limited.  After it's removed, your Limited will feel much closer to the SG.  Then, IIRC, the SG has 1-inch shorter shocks than your Limited...so you could do same to your '16 and get a lower ride, making it even more like the SG--and for a lot less $$.

The way to decide is to ask yourself this question:  Is it worth (approximately) $19,000 for the things you gain from the SG?  Or would you be happy if you got everything except the paint by spending $1000 for terrific shocks and several $hundred for a seat.  Oh, and you wouldn't have to spend another $2000 to put a TP on the SG   :)

I’ve taken the tour pak off and changed the seat, it has made a big difference in the weight and handling of the bike. I’m riding a SG today and my bike back to back, so I’ll get a good comparison. And yes, I’m totally aware of the differences in the motors. The deal offered is doable and affordable, so for me it comes down looks, performance and as mentioned, personal preference. Thanks for the input!

You're asking what you should do...that's tough, because I can only tell you what I'd do...and this is it: you're current bike only has 8600 miles - plenty of miles remaining.  I'd be concerned about trading for the M8 until I was assured the kinks have been worked out (oil migration and sumping).

Wife is OK with trading if that's what I want to do. She knows what moves my soul!

A new bike can reinvigorate your riding desire, especially if you aren't exactly thrilled with your current ride. Go for it.
