High oil Temp
« on: August 12, 2020, 05:43:05 PM »

I have a 2012 CVO ultra i just had HD change the oil at 20,000 and they put in ams oil. My oil temp went from 102-105 to over 114C also my oil pressure at idle went from 20 psi down to 12 psi  what should i be looking for to make sure i not going to break down on my way to sturgis this weekend.

Typically as oil temp increases the gauge reading at idle will be lower, but as long as you are seeing pressure you're probably just fine.

If your lifters have over 20k that might be something to think about.

114° C is about 237° F, and 230° F is what Harley says is normal operating temperature.  As for the idle oil pressure, 12 psi is better than average with the engine at normal operating temperature.  What oil type and viscosity were you running before, and what viscosity Amsoil did the dealer install?  What was the ambient air temperature when you recorded the higher oil temp and lower idle pressure?  The hotter it gets outside, the hotter the oil will run, and the hotter oil will thin more resulting in lower idle oil pressure.

I'm not sure how we could answer your question based on what you posted.

Like stated above, normal is close to 240 (F) and a good synthetic does not breakdown until well over 400 (F).  I finally got rid of my oil temperature gauge, one less thing to worry about.

Temp outside is about 70 and i was running 20-50 Harley Synthetic I had them switch to ams oil 20-50 the driving to Sturgis I was at 270-280f and it was hot enough the engine was Pre-detonating.

It's easy enough to dump the Amsoil and go back to the H-D Syn 3.  Try it and see if your issue goes away, only cost you about 35-40 bucks (don't need to change the filter).  Btw, oil temps at 270 - 280 are not abnormal or severe, it depends on how hard you are working the engine and how hot the air is.  Many people have seen oil temps at or above 300 on Twin Cams, that's why it is highly recommended you run synthetic oil.  Late model Twin Cams (2010 - 2016) run hot, it's the nature of the beast.

I'm confused...was it 70 degrees back when you were running HD Syn3, or is it 70 now on the way to Sturgis?  Don't usually see detonation when oil temp is 270.

Edited to strike last sentence.

We just got home from sturgis and while riding around out there my oil temp went up to 248 and my wife's went as high as 250. I have a 16 cvo sg and she has a 13 sg. I was a little concerned about it at first and then I remember riding my sportster years ago with no oil temp gauge and then I never really worried about the oil temp after that.

The best thing Harley riders can do for their own piece of mind is to never install or use an oil temperature gauge.  In many cases they are not terribly accurate anyway, the so-called normal oil temperature on a Harley is highly dependent on ambient temperatures and riding conditions, and unless you want to install a large fan assisted oil cooler there really isn't much anyone can do about it anyway. Use a high quality synthetic oil, change it at the the recommended intervals or have it tested to determine the appropriate interval for your circumstances, and worry about something else.  Lord knows Harley gives you plenty of real issues to worry about, you don't need to add oil temperature to the list.

I only know how  my bikes the non CVO ones  operate a 12 Street Glide with a SS124 an a 13 Road Glide with a 143 SS do . Both have oil temp gauges in the pan . Both have oil coolers and wards cooling fans. Lot can be learned by watching your oil temps which is determined by how hot it is ,stop and go traffic .2 up on not ridding . How fast ect . Both of my SS motors hold good oil pressure . Temps are very similar on both bikes . I see temp of 230 normal going on freeway at say 3k rpms plus at 75 to 85 deg . Stop and go traffic will make a big difference say 250 to 260  .I use the wards cooling fans .  I use 10-60 liquid moly . My oil pressure stays up even at the higher temps .  If you ride in stop and go traffic in 95 plus temps the engine will be pretty warm. I learned a lesson a few weeks ago as I went into the big bend park an the speed limit was I think 35 or 40 for a long way and it was hot . When my oil temps got to 250 I just speed up not going to over heat my motor just because . For me the temp of the oil  is more important than the silly air temp gauge I replace in both bikes
