2018 CVO Road glide lowers
« on: November 26, 2017, 03:39:51 PM »

Just wondering if there is any info if lowers will work if the engine guard is changed on the new road glide cvo. Looking at a new bike and want to be able to add lowers also will harley even make lowers for the road glides if they say they won’t fit or would it have to be an after market thing? Any info would be good

Several here are wondering the same thing. If the highway bar and fairing mounts are changed to accept the factory lowers there seems to be no physical reason that they won't work.

Getting my Blk Earth/Vivid Blk in about a week. Already bought blk lowers and regular black engine gaurd ,and the regular black fairing supports . If the fender hits the lowers I am prepared to change the front wheel, fender, and guts of the forks to standard ride height. I am not crazy about that 21 inch wheel anyway but if it does not interfere with the lowers I might leave it alone.----------Gonna probably use the gloss black agitators and a 19" front tire if I decide to change it.------Stock wheels from a road glide special will work too--------but they are flat black, not gloss.
Ill let you all know as soon as I get the bike . I will attempt to install the lowers right away.
As for the other two colors , could be more of a problem since you will have to color match the fender and lowers. I have already found a guy that can duplicate the  orange graphics on the black fender that mine comes with. Probably will leave the lowers vivid black. If it looks like it needs it I will add some black earth and orange striping  to match the rest of the bike.

I'll definitely be keeping an eye on this thread! Any plans on adding speakers and an amp to the lowers?

Thanks, Kelly

Yes I do ---------Probably will add the HD stage 2 fairing lower speakers ,amp , and install kit. Im gonna wait and see if there is enough sound without them after I install my windshield(13"windvest) and lowers. When I test rode the bike couple months ago you couldnt hear the stereo at all ---------no lowers and totally worthless windshield -----but I had the same issues on previous RG's and after installing windshield and lowers , problem solved.
I already have the fullsac catless headpipe, techmat kit, tuner and baffles, windshield and custom mustang seat I had made(see picture). Ill use the stock seat around town , but for the wife and I on the road we will use the mustang---------stocker doesnt work for me at all for long days.

That mustang seat set looks awesome,
That's exactly what I want for my new Road glide I'll be getting in a weeks time,
To save confusion when I ring up mustang do you have your order / invoice number so I can get them to duplicate that order for me? .....it would really help me out buddy.  :2vrolijk_21:

This bike looks exactly like what I want to bad my local dealer didn’t have it. I may just have to copy it. Good to see the lowers will work I talked to another dealer today and they thought they would fit without an issue as well

Have the same bike and parts ready to go. They originally told me it won't work. All you need is to change the engine guard, i believe...

You have to change the fairing support brackets as well.....black ones are listed in the P&A catalog...
If you want speakers you have to order the speaker boxes to replace the glove boxes, stage 2 fairing lower speakers , amp, and install kit.
You will then have the same 900 watt system as the cvo street glide.
All those parts are listed in the P&A catalog.

I would be interested in your take off fairing support if you decide to part with it. They only come in black and not sold separately, so I want one to chrome.

This is the second one I have seen with lowers added.  Saw the Gunship Gray on facebook with lowers.

I figures you could do it from day one.  Way to many road glides out there with 21" wheels.  All HD did was lower the front suspension 1" to keep the same rake and trail, just like most people do.

Change engine guard, fairing supports.

Dave if you see that picture again scalp it for me please. I'd like to see it.

That engine guard and fairing support would sell quick as they are desirable parts.  I'd take them both for a 2107 26" build I have coming up.

probably not so much as misinformed as the parts guy doesn't know how to look up oem parts and just defaults to the p&a catalog.  and if it isn't in there, well, it just doesn't exist....

So I decided to make a call to HD customer service to ask the obvious why's and how comes about lowers on our 18 SERGs. I talked to a really nice lady named Debbie who said she would love to answer my (our) question but had already run this up the ladder and THEY would not specify as to why......

I was told originally, it couldnt be done because of the engine guard and the fender would hit the lowers. Engine guard made NO sense or the fender hitting. They are doing it for me now!!

Something else they mentioned - you cant get speakers in the lowers, for some reason. Why can they do it on a SG??

Because half the time the P&A catalog doesn't know what fits what.  They are the same lowers, and use the same air cleaner so they should fit fine.

Some year's road glides came with Heavy breathers, and with the heavy breather, speakers will not fit.

You can do speakers------------Its all in the P&A catalog.
speakers--76000353A--399.95
install kit--76000749--299.95
amp--76000277A --449.95

Use one of the 20% off dealers ----------

This gives you the same system(900 watts) that in the CVO SG

You also have to have the speaker boxes to replace the glove boxes , another 279.95

Its in the color shop section. For me it was vivid black ------If you have a gunship grey or the orange , then you probably want primed and have to get them painted like you want.

H guys, i am new to this forum, been at hdforums for years with softails but this year i finally step to touring territory and i bought CVO... i am from Europe,Czech republic.

My bike is 2018 CVO RG in gunship gray and i will install lowers this week on Wednesday. We install them just to try the fitment before they go for paint. So i can share some pictures and info. Till now i did not get any info if the lowers fit or not. HD says no, we think they should.... reading this threat i am happy we are propably right.

We will use standard size engine guard and fairing support. Unfortunately my dealer told me the standard fairiing support is available only in chrome and not gloss black so i was going to paint it. If you have part number for black one, please share it.

BTW i will also install 300 W speakers and AMP to have same music as SG. We also install stretched side covers.

Hmm ...just wondering why you've purchased lowers in the primer , if you have the gunship grey like mine then colour matched lowers are already available without the need for painting as there the ones from the gunship grey  cvo street glide this year.

Also for those who want to fit lowers to the Road glide and god forbid they don't fit with the 21" wheel  :'( then as a trade off option you can get the  gunship grey street glide 18" front wheel , colour matched lowers and a wrap around fender all colour coded !
but that's only in gunship colour , personally I prefer to keep the big 21" wheel.

Hmm ...just wondering why you've purchased lowers in the primer , if you have the gunship grey like mine then colour matched lowers are already available without the need for painting as there the ones from the gunship grey  cvo street glide this

2 reasons... we did not know if they realy fit. When we ordered them, there was no info about fitment except Harley saying it can not be done. So i was ready to do some modifications like cut them, adjust them... I did not want to change wheel and fender. So better to paint after the modification and cutting is done.

I ordered also stretched side covers and they are also in primer. So i will paint both parts at one shot. Every HD parts from catalogue are basically more expansive by 50% in my country compare US prices. So difference primer / painted is minimum 1000 usd on the 2 parts. I can paint them here for 300 ... beside the possible modification/cutting convinced me to order primer version.

Welcome to the forum.  Keep us posted on your lowers installation and post some pictures.

You picked the best color.

I was very happy to see it in HD range for 2018... I see you have a same :) Here is my bike on delivery day. Unfortunately its winter here so bike stays at showroom till March... I will post pictures with lowers later this week.

We should install the lowers today but it did not happen. I have the chrome fairing support. And replacing engine guard for standard one means also replacing the fairing support. But i can not use the chrome one. Actually it would be useless work because the fairing must be dismantled and assembled back during the installation and using chrome support, we would do it twice. I have to paint the chrome to black first or order the black one. My dealer says he does not see the black one in EU catalogue yet, i think he just do not want to order the black part again. So we will probably paint the chrome to black since its already here.....

Anyway, since i see from the picture here, the lowers can be installed without any cutting and adjustment, i think to paint them now and install everything at one shot. I just hope it can be really done :).... If anyone has any more info, i would appreciate to know it.....

Okay Guys, Just got through installing my lowers. No problem. There is actually as much if not more clearance between the fender and the lowers as there was between the chopped engine guard and the fender.
See pictures below.
I removed the chopped guard, the fairing support bracket , installed the regular engine guard , regular black fairing support brackets , and black lowers. It all fit just fine. Be advised that the regular fairing support brackets are numbered 1 and 2----the instructions say 1 is right and 2 is left---------WRONG! at least mine was. Its pretty obvious which side they go on , just pay attention.

im not sure yet
Gonna ride it awhile and think on it. Right now I think the solid black down low is adequate......my paint guy agrees but said he coud do some matching black earth and/or orange graphics for couple hundred bucks.
I just got it yesterday and tore into it right away.....its 36 degrees and raining here so perfect time to work on it.
Ive got my seat andwindvest on .....fullsac catless headpipe, baffles and tuner in the box......ill do that in a while....gonna ride it awhile first.

Do you think that there is any chance of a clearance issue when hitting something like a large pothole that would completely collapse the front suspension, like top of fender hitting something on the front of the frame?

The relationship between the frame, the front fender ,and the lower triple clamp is no different now than it was before I installed the lowers........so ,no, I dont believe there is a problem.

HD lowers are 699.00 for black ones.
The speaker pods are another 279.00
Hard to believe you could get both for 152.00

Installation was a breeze!
No issues whatsoever with fitment.......you guys with gunship grey or the orange one will have paint matching issues to deal with if you install lowers but im sure you already know that. Bottom line though is they fit with no problems and have at least as much if not more fender to lowers/engine guard clearance as with the chopped engine guard.
I have about 400 miles on it with some of it being in strong wind conditions and experienced no more handling issues than with my previous RG.
I am completely stumped as to why the MOCO says they wont fit with knockout front wheel.
I have my bike apart now installing the fullsac stuff.....baffles, tech mat kit, catless pipe, and tune.
Only other issue I may deal with is suspension. This bike is reeeeeeally on the firm side......rear is same shocks as came on my 12 rg but vastly more rough. Front end is very firm...21 inch tire feels every fluctuation in road surface. Im seriously considering the ohlins 30 mm cartridge kit inthe front and blacklines on the rear and going to standard ride height front and rear. Ill think on it while I put some more miles on it.
All in all though......I truly love this bike! Far and away better than my 12.
I almost hate to install the fullsac baffles.....I can really hear the stereo well at 75 and kind of enjoyed the nice quiet ride. Guess im gettin old.

Saw mine yesterday with lowers and trunk, matching passenger floor boards. Are you changing out the head pipe? I like the Titanium pipes, but limits what you can do. I dont think anyone makes anything with same finish.

It won't be as loud as you may think. The M8 is a quiet motor.

Fullsac header and 2 1/4" baffles and my girl asked if I changed the exhaust because it was so quiet!!

actually, with the gunship grey there should be no paint matching difficulties.  just order the ones from the gunship grey street glide.

actually, with the gunship grey there should be no paint matching difficulties.  just order the ones from the gunship grey street glide.
Interesting! I had completley overlooked the fact that the cvo street glides come in grey and orange......if they arent part protected I guess you could order those if you have one of those color road glides.
I tried to order some tank badges from a grey one the other day and since my black earth doesnt have them they wouldnt let me have them.

Saw mine yesterday with lowers and trunk, matching passenger floor boards. Are you changing out the head pipe? I like the Titanium pipes, but limits what you can do. I dont think anyone makes anything with same finish.
Yes im putting on a catless headpipe from fullsac but will use the stock heat shields.....not sure what that color is called but im ok with it. The dark alloy cvo street glide has those same heat shields but also has matching fork sliders.

I have looked into it.  Just over 1800 dollars after you buy all the parts needed to do it counting the paint matched CVO Street glide lowers and thats with a 20% discount.

You can get it about 100 less if you buy the primed lower kit and then the CVO Street glide lowers and just swap all the parts.

Hoping someone finds the paint match as that would bring the cost down more.

Dave, maybe I’m not following correctly but wouldn’t you just pay the extra $100 for the matched paint?

do they have provisions for radiators? Are they different than non radiator lowers?

do you need provision for the radiators?  the 2018 doesn't come with radiators.  but it does have speaker enclosures.

I'll ask that differently.... Is the Street Glide water cooled and are the lowers different for a water cooled bike over a non water cooled bike ? ..... .... would someone be bolting water cooled style lowers on (if they are different).

Since I'm not a fairing lower type person I have no idea. Just trying to educate myself here.....

The 2018 CVO Street glide is air cooled like the road glide. In 17 the CVO Street glide was water cooled.

I like the air management the lowers provide.

There is no paint matching issue.  The issue is its 1800 dollars because it is not offered in a kit.  I can buy the CVO lowers, and a set of primed lowers in a kit and save 100 dollars over buy all the parts to install the lowers.

So my thought is if I can have the primed lowers paint matched for under 800 dollars I can save money.

Dave do you mean $1000.00 where you typed $100.00? Cause $100.00 savings isn't much of a difference to have factory matched paint.

No the hundred dollar savings is buying the paint matched lowers and the primed lower kit, instead of buying the paint matched lowers and all the parts required to install them.  The parts a very expensive not in a kit.

if he buys the lowers complete in primed, and then just the paint matched lower without any hardware and then switches everything over from the complete lower to the paint matched shell of the lower it is about $100 cheaper than just buying everything needed to put the lower together complete.  confused me at first as well, then i had to really study what he wrote to figure it out.

Saves over 100 dollars.  The primed come as a Kit with all the mounting hardware and so on.

The painted do not come as a kit.  By the time you buy everything need it costs more than the primed kit

So the HD dealer told me in order to get my lowers on my new 2018 CVO RG Gunship Grey that it was going to be $2,200. There has to be another option?

Parts alone are 1800 dollars.  You have to buy each part  individually, there is no kit.

Part # 57100258---primed vented fairing lowers---449.95(get another 20% off from one of the 20 off dealers) and find someone to paint them for you. There are a  couple people on this topic that have color matched parts for their gunship grey.

I did this on my black earth and vivid black but  on it all I had to do was buy vivid black ones ----------Don't know what it would cost to paint a set of primed ones but it would surely be less than 2200.00 by the time you got it all done.

My dealer is telling me that those lowers on the the street glide cvo gunship grey can't be ordered, instead they have to be pieced together. Can anyone confirm they bought gunship grey lowers from the dealer if so I want in?

You dealer is correct.  They are not available as a kit, have to be bought piece by piece.  This is because Harley says lowers do not work with the 21 wheel which we all know is false.

I had my dealer install the lowers which arrived in black base paint, local paint shop matched the Gun Metal Grey perfectly. They look and function great.

Here's how it goes. You could piece it together bit by bit, but it's cheaper to buy the unpainted kit and also buy the gray painted skins. Saves about $100 and you don't have to order each and every piece individually.

I have installed the lowers on my 2018 FLTRXSE which fit with no problem. They were in Black base paint and required painting which matched perfectly. the part numbers shown are "Fairing Lower Unpainted #57100258" & "Gloss Black Engine Guard Kit #49050-09A" along with "Kit Bracket, Suprt, Frng, Blk #47200278".

Canadian dollar parts totalled 1,040.88, Labor 360, Paint 535.

The windshield and signal LED lights are designed for the Road Glide from Custom Dynamics, they flash in sequence alternating amber to the white marker lights. Easy install and very bright.

I’m gonna start buying parts for this. Has anyone complied a parts list?
I have gunship and I want to add speakers.

Lowers
Engine guard
Amp
Speakers
Fairing brackets

Anything else I’m missing?

Also as far as fairing removal I can get the top half off no problem, but someone said the entire shell has to be removed, is this accurate or can I install the new fairing brackets without removing the bottom half of the fairing...if true then that makes it a dealer job (at least for my skill set).

To just add the lowers, which requires changing the engine guard and fairing mounts, you are good to go, but as far as adding an amp and speakers that I believe would be a different story including having someone flash the head unit?. Maybe someone else could chime in on that.

Great information here, looking to add lowers to my ‘19 CVORG. I know this thread is a little older but now that you guys have some miles on this set up any issues? My dealer said it would only work with a wrapped front fender. Glad to see it is possible just wanting to hear some reviews.
Thanks

‘19 CVO Road Glide has the Fang Spoiler and Chopped Engine Guard.    That’s a whole different animal.   Lower fairings won’t fit the chopped guard and the fang wont fit the standard guard without heavy modification.   If you wanted to remove the chopped guard and the fang spoiler then you could probably make it happen but that would sure alter the coolness of the bike!

Thanks for the information, I put lowers on my ‘18 RGS as I have had them on every bike I’ve owned since 2012. I agree I’d lose part of what sets the bike apart with the fang spoiler but I like the functionality of the lowers and the look of the traditional engine guard.
Decisions, decisions... Thanks again

And yes your 19 Heavy Breather air intake will fit, but not with the Boom II speaker grills in the lowers. It looks like some of the aftermarket companies will have a solution though.

MOFO67 does not say what version of the '19s he has (Unless I missed it)    Would be interesting to see how he handles the painting?  Red Pepper?  Silver?   Replicate the colors and Pinstripes?    Even the Mako would not look right with just Vivid Black because of the Pearl...

Agreed and good points all.

Normally the lowers (even for CVO colors) come in the "base" color when added from P&A book.
I don't remember any lowers that could be added from P&A that came with any multi-color graphics so that was what I was thinking with my post.

Adding graphics would change a lot and didn't think about that.

I have the Mako and looking at the fade the lowers might end up just blue like the front fender. I rode about 200 miles this past Sunday and arrived back home after dark and temps down in the 40s. I didn’t prepare as well as I should have to get back that late and I did miss being able to tuck my legs behind the lower fairings. At this point it’s all stock other than the windshield so I’m in the process of deciding what’s changes I want to make.
Thanks for all of the feedback and help.

Here is a little better view of the area. Based on the front fender, fade on the tank and fang spoiler is why I am thinking the lowers would need to be blue with no fade.

In my opinion it would need to have the same fade.
Does the Mako fade based on light angle or is it a painted fade?

I've never seen one in person

You are right Mofo, there is no "fade" at that part of the bike. To make it look factory, which is what I'm assuming you want, your lowers would need to match the front fender with no fade.
Go for it I'm really glad that I did mine!

Ordered the color match RG headlight trim and the color match mid-frame air deflectors today. The air deflectors come in the same color as the front fender, Blue Tide. I have a chrome engine guard that I’m taking to have powder coated on Thursday. I hope to get the engine guard back in a couple of weeks and will be able to order the lowers right after Christmas.

We should start a new thread on this as it is a 19.  But, my question is, what will you do about the "fangs"?  Are you going to remove them?  I also have a 19 and would like to add lowers, but I really like the look of the fangs.

Didn’t read the whole thread but has anyone installed lowers with the boom speakers? Wondering about doing the install this winter and am wondering where they install the additional amp? Wiring it to the fairing seams easiest.

Same as the CVO Street Glide, 3rd amp for 3rd set of speakers goes in the saddlebag.

That’s what I thought. Anyone done this yet sounds like a pretty in depth install but I could be wrong. Also drilling holes for wires does seem a bit sketchy too.

Bringing this back up. I posted a couple of years ago that I was thinking about adding lowers to my ‘19 Mako. On an impulse I traded the bike and have always regretted it.

The day HD revealed the ‘22s I bought a Blue Steel CVO RG. This week I ordered all of the parts needed to put lowers on my ‘22 CVO RG. I talked to Joe at Xtreme Dimensions and was planning to have him do the work.

I might regret it but I mentioned to my dealer what I was doing and they said they could have it done and guarantee 100% match. They claim the company painting them, not Gunslinger, has a contract with HD and has all of the paints codes??? I wasn’t 100% clear but I think the company does some of HDs custom paint sets and also paints older parts needed after an accident, when HD no longer has the parts available.

With the dealer being local and the cost being almost the same i decided to go with the dealer. Might regret it, but I sure hope not.

Painted parts should be back around the first of May and all the other parts over the next couple of weeks. Planning to add a secondary amp and speakers in the lowers next winter.

I know this thread started a couple of years ago. Anyone have issues after adding the lowers to a CVO RG with a 21” front wheel? Anything I should be aware of or do during the install?

I know back in 2018 and 2019 Harley clearly stated that lowers would not work with a 21" front wheel.  So getting paint matched through the factory was impossible.  Hopefully Harley realized after seeing many of us add lowers with no issue to our 18's they changed that and do offer paint matched.  Sure would be nice.

Dave, that would be nice. In my case the dealer is ordering the lower fairings primed and having them painted by a company they “claim” is contracted through HD. I have no proof but will update with comments and pictures as soon as they arrive.

I read you post where buying the different parts through a dealer back in 2018 would be about $1,800. I guess buying color matched that came on the CVO SG. I’ll be in at about $1,100 for the fairings and paint.

We tried four times to get the match to Gunship Gray, it was off every time. Ended up using Joe at Xtreme Dimension, spot on match

Yeah Dave, that is my worry. I had spoken to the dealer before I called Joe. After speaking to Joe I thought he would be the best option, but the dealer swore the company doing it has a contract with HD and has all of the paint codes.
If it doesn’t match the first time I will not give the dealer a second chance they will go straight to Joe.

I completely understand.  Joe is slow, but his results are fantastic.

I know this thread started a couple of years ago. Anyone have issues after adding the lowers to a CVO RG with a 21” front wheel? Anything I should be aware of or do during the install?

Hey MOFO, adding the lowers is very straight forward and easily done. Adding speakers to the lowers is very doable as well but I recommend finding a tech at a dealer who has tackled this upgrade and knows what parts to order and the tricks involved to set it up and of coarse access to the digitech. I upgraded to GTS on my 18 at the same time so my install was a little more involved, but again, very doable and in my opinion well worth it!

Got all of the parts in except the lowers so this week I’ll remove the chopped engine guard and replace it with the standard engine guard. I hope to have the lowers back in about 3 weeks so the bike will be ready when the time arrives.

I picked up a oil cooler cover yesterday and the box clearly states will not work with lowers. The dealer said it is the same cover that came on ‘18/‘19 CVOs RG/SG. From the pictures on this thread and owning a ‘19 CVO SG with lowers it should fit. Guess I’ll see in a few weeks..

Which oil cooler did you order?

Thank you everyone for all of the information sharing. Picked the lowers up Saturday and installed them yesterday. Really like the look and functionality of the lowers. I tried to upload an updated picture but it’s says the file is to big upload???
Anyway thanks again everyone!
