Does Fuel Stabilizer Go Bad?
« on: January 15, 2015, 09:39:35 PM »

I got this big jug of Stabil that will probably last a few years. Does anyone know if this stuff goes bad?

According to fuel-testers.com, Sta-Bil is: "Petroleum Distillate Naphtha Solvent 95% (CAS# 64742-53-6: aka Transformer Oil, HYNAP® and others) + Undisclosed Additive Mixture 5%".

So it shouldn't go bad like old gas does...

Sta-bil is the one additive I actually do use religiously for storage, and I've also bought it in those big jugs for years.  I've never had an issue with it "going bad" or having any deleterious affect on the fuel or the engines I've used that fuel in.

Thanks for the link, Ken. It's good to know that I chose the good stuff. I've been riding for over a dozen years and I've had five bikes, and the only thing I've ever put in the tanks is fuel. But now that I've bought a bike for over 25K, and with all the talk about Ethanol in gas, and with the winters seeming longer, colder, and messier (more salt on the roads) than ever, I figured it couldn't hurt. I try to ride all year, but the last couple of winters January, February, and much of March just got too bad for me.

Thanks man. I've never put anything except fuel in my tanks until now (once I spent over 25K on a bike). I try to ride all year, but the last few winters saw the bike sit for January, February, and much of March.

Sta-bil definitely helps, but keep in mind that it probably loses its ability after a year or so. I used Sta-bil in my bikes when I went overseas, but after one year, I couldn't start either one (each had a fresh battery).  The carb on my FLSTF had to be cleaned out--lots of gunk in the jets. The FI on my RG started only after a long cranking session.

We have been using a product called PRI-G at our marina for years to pre treat our fuel as it is added to our 1000 gallon tank. We buy it in bulk and one gallon treats over 2000 gallons of fuel. Supposedly it is for long term storage and even rejuvinates old fuel to a usable state. I am by no means a pertochemical engineer ??? but there are supposedly independent tests to prove what the manufacturer claims. It even is supposed to rejuvinate 15 year old fuel and make it usable.http://www.kansaswindpower.net/PRI%20lab_tests.htm. It costs about $50.00 for a bottle that treats 572 gallons. I have used it for years in all my bikes, cars, and small engines

Never used it myself, but the main ingredient in PRI-G is Shellsol D60.  See warning found on a fuel testing site below:

"Shellsol is an industrial solvent chemical found in many products. Shellsol D60 chemical name = Solvent Naphtha (Petroleum) Medium Aliphatic. Class: Petroleum SOLVENT. Registered trademark of Shell.
Warning notes: Likely due to incompatibility with ethanol fuel blends, we have received the most reports of engine damage caused by a gas additive from those who used PRI-G and Ezorb. Reports state fuel thickens, gels-up and clogs carburetor and filters. Caution advised."

I've had the big container of Sta-Bil in the cabinet for a couple years and it worked fine. Put it in a snow blower that sat for 2 years after the Sta-Bil was a year and a half old, when I needed the blower fired on the 2nd pull, ran like a champ. Seafoam is another great product for gas that will sit. Stabilizes the fuel and helps clean the carbon out.

See my earlier post, Jerry... Sta-Bil is 95% that stuff, according to fuel-testers.com.

If my bike sits for a year I've died and gone to hell.

The best approach if you have to leave the vehicle sitting for a year or more would be to completely drain all the fuel, and not rely on a stabilizer.  By all the fuel, I mean ALL the fuel.  Clear the fuel pump, filter, lines, and injectors as well as the tank.

I have a buddy that does a LOT of small engine repair. He says that he has scraped more "red crap" out of carburetors and float bowls  than he cares to recount. After researching different additives we have settled on Sea Foam. It also does more than just treat gasoline.

Yeah it does, but you just need to add some fuel stabilizer to keep it fresh... :huepfenjump3:

No, but really, I just stick to the Seafoam- it works great as a stablizer, plus I run it in the tank every so often, and also add some in the oil 100 miles prior to an oil change. It's so multi-purpose that it doesn't stay around long enough to go stale.
