Title: H/D Shorty Antennas
Post by: dogdoc85 on April 15, 2018, 09:06:27 PM
Curious if those that have replaced the stock whip antennas (AM/FM and Cb) with
the short/stubby antennas have any complaints or difficulties in reception with them.
Thinking of changing mine out. Thanks

I use them on my 15 CVO Road Glide and have not noticed any less reception than stock. Just to be clear, however, the CB works fine. I really don't use the FM that much as I have Sirius XM on the bike.

Changed to shorty antennas on 2 other bikes, no issues.

The only time I notice a difference in FM reception is when I'm out in the country more than sixty miles from the transmitter for the Chicago stations I listen to.  The whip seemed to pull stations in clearly in fringe areas better than the shorty.  I have no feedback on the CB since I don't own one.

Do not use CB anymore because the chatter annoys me (look at that tree! Did XYZ get caught at the light?) when I want to be annoyed the least.  On the other 2 bikes, when I still used a CB, did not notice any real difference.  Was always line of sight with signal fade at a mile or less.  Flat terrain better than hilly.  Both antennas worked the same, recall a few rides where several of us tested them on familiar roads, same day, with antenna swaps.

Put short antennas on Beauregard and noticed no issues with FM reception.  I have not turned on the CB so can't answer to that.

I've used shorties on three bikes with no problems with either Radio or CB.

H-D publishes a comparison - pull up the shorty in the H-D Store, then look under Guides.

All I did with my FM is snip the end off and put on a new rubber tip. Works great.

Still the best option IMO.

I did this mod over the weekend on my 2017 Street Glide and it was easy to do and the reception appears to be unchanged. I advise using zip ties to secure the antenna away from the belt and sprocket.

Years back when I had my 08 LTD we were about 70 miles out of town.
I had the OE whip antennas and a friend had the short antennas, I could still bring in the back home stations that he could 't.
Maybe after this much time they could be better.
CB was still good but we were still close 1/4 mile or to give road traffic info on  corners.

I did install the hidden antenna on my 12 CVO StreetGlide,  no noticeable improvement.
