Title: 17' CVO SPEAKERS (in lowers) & AMP INSTALL OEM HD PARTS w/ Raditors
Post by: RivRaptor on November 04, 2018, 02:44:04 PM
Let me answer a question most would like to know right out of the gate....How much does it cost & what do you need to do this with all oem HD stuff?    Well be prepared to spend between $1500 to $2000 depending on whether you install yourself or use a dealer.  You do need to flash your system for the new amp @ the dealer.  (Most charge 1hr min)  Note:  MUST LEAVE AMP UNPLUGED UNTIL THE SYSTEM IS FLASHED
Parts needed:
Speakers
Speaker install kit
Amp
Amp install kit / wiring
Install kit template addition / update,  believe this is included in newer kits.
Small power spliter harness (part guy thought I might need) didn't use.

Why?  Well 6 speakers has to sound better than 4 right? And I wanted more / clearer sound at a lower volume & not cut up the bike with aftermarket, plus  keep all HD functions working properly (Plug & Play).  I also purchased parts over time and used discounts / points to keep prices down.  Also did install myself.  Managed to keep final cost around $1200.
You have to remove the seat, side covers, bags, gas tank & front fairing cover to complete this install.

Template placement.  Also note that the instructions go between the service manual (I didn't have) and 2 sets that come with different components.

I made a mistake here.  Don't use the plug under left side over.  The new harness plug will reach & is the same type!

Use this 3 way splitter to tie into bikes amp circuit under seat towards rear / left area.  This is where you would tie in a 4th amp.  Its capped on this install.

Routing the harness is not fun the instructions suck, also have lots of blk zip ties on hand for adjustments & rerouting!

Wires for new speakers (1 for each side) and 1 wire that goes under the front fairing are routed under gas tank in wire loom.  Made sure you have enough / slack to reach the speakers.

These 2 connectors are not used on Boom 2 installs and because things are tight under / in the under tank loom area I removed them from the harness and terminated them under the right side cover

Amp done with cover installed.  Looks like other side now but with 3 connectors instead of 1.
Note:  The connectors on the new expansion harness are not the nice / easy yellow quick disconnect ones that came on the bikes bags stock!

The speakers go into the mount kit & then snap into place once you remove the block off plates.
Note again:  Do not connect Amp until you have dealer flash the bike for the amp!

Reveiw:  If you can swallow the cost I like them.  I was supprised that I can hear the sound comming from these over the front fairing speakers.  I was expecting to have to angle these upward to not be over powered by the fairing speakers, I was wrong.  Let me also say this...I have messed around with stereo's off & on most of my life and Im not crazy about HD's deal with 1 amp for 2 speakers there is a much simpler, better & cheaper way but what do i know! I am just but  a Pawn in the great Chess game of life!

Thanks for posting this info., you did a nice job on the install and the post. I'm seriously contemplating a similar upgrade on my Road Glide with the factory components. I've already added the lowers so need to ad amp, speakers, harness and speaker pods.
Sounds like you're happy with your outcome.
2 questions; would you do anything different and how is the clearance between the right speaker grill and your air intake?

TIA

Thanks for the replys!  To answer the questions.....being a music file I was ok with the stock system it's not great but all things considered it got the job done.  I could hear my music files on Spotify at 2/3 to 3/4 volume @ around 80mph depending on the tract.  I don't like going 3/4 and above on volume (to much distortion) so was hoping to increase clarity but keep volume down with doing this upgrade. I think this achivied that, I'm getting more sound at a lower volume.  At least the components should last longer!  As for the Heavy Breather air cleaner I posted another thread a little while back about cutting the filter element down & remounting to achieve clearance.  Check that thread out.   Note:  if your don't have radiators in your lowers you may not have clearance issues & may need a different Mount kit / Speaker.  ie:  18's have a bigger speaker & it mounts shallower in the enclosure.  (No radiator)

Nice job with work and write up. I hope you have better luck with HD speakers than I have.

Hi Rivraptor, very nice work on both your high flow intake which I had enjoyed reading earlier and the speaker install. I am going to perform both installs on my 2018 CVO and will let the forum know if the filter clears the speakers on non radiated bikes. If possible I would appreciate it if you could post the actual part numbers associated with the speaker install to avoid potential issues in not ordering the correct parts. Thanks and keep up the excellent posts. Biggdog

Greetings all, I am being told by the parts rep that HD will not allow the ECM to be flashed to recognise the additional amp on Road Glides with the 21" front tire?! This follows their claim that the lowers cannot be installed with a 21"tire which has been proven wrong long ago. Please let me know if anyone has successfully completed the lower speaker install on the 2018 CVO with 21"tire including the required flash and if you were told the same story? How did you get around it, apparently the bikes SN is the blocker. Thanks in advance.

Interesting, maybe try a different dealer who is willing to work with you if they want to sell you the $2500 worth of parts needed to complete your project?

76000660 speaker kit twin cooled lowers
76000277A (or B now) Amp
76000749 Install kit
76000734 Install kit (a new bag-harness hole template & harness cap)

Since 18's don't have radiators you could use the speakers from an 18' CVO SG they are larger in diameter & are more flush mounted hereby negating the possible need to shave the filter element on the heavy breather. Just do a mock up first.
