i get the spinning wheel of death trying to install the latest Dealer Location Update. then it says improper data file. What am i doing wrong? never had this issue previously.

Just did mine and it completed OK. Instructions say to have ignition in Accessory mode. Not sure if that matters or if On works also. Anyway I did put mine in Accessory.
Copy the file 'swdl.iso' which appears after you unzip the download from H-D to the 'root' directory of the thumb drive. It will not work if it is in some sub-directory/folder. I also copied the folder 'nng' from the unzipped download to the root directory of the thumb drive. Not sure if that is necessary but as I said the update worked OK.

I did that. I get the authenticating circle and then nave sync error. not sure what to do. Changed usb drives. Downloaded new. I am at a loss.

Is this really an update?....a few years ago after an update I went to 3 dealers while on vacation and the only indication there was ever a Harley store there was the un-faded bar & shield on the wall

Who knows what if anything has been added or changed. I would think something has or the moco wouldn't go to the expense of the update. With that being said of course it is no guarantee that all of the information is 100% accurate.

... and HD doesn't bother to add a date or version to the dealer location file so you have to guess whether it is a new file :(
