Vance & Hines power duals
« on: July 30, 2016, 04:05:57 PM »

I bought my '15 CVO SG with Vance & Hines power duals and the Screamin' Eagle Tuner.  Does this mean they are not just slip ons and they are headers as well?  See pics of actual bike...

When headers are installed, is it common or required to dyno tune the bike?  He had the Screamin' Eagle Tuner he sent with it.

Yes, anytime head pipes are installed it needs to be tuned. That's why you have a tuner. If the stock headers were on there and you only changed mufflers, then no tune needed.

So when the seller told me it has the Screamin' Eagle Tuner, does that mean it was actually tuned on a dyno or could it be tuned without?  What I've learned is that in order to get any decent tune out of any vehicle, it needs to be dyno tuned, just like my race cars.

If it has the tuner, it was on the dyno.  No one in their right mind would spend the $495 or what ever they are and not use it. If the bike is running fine, it was tuned. With headers on it, you would be able to tell if it wasn't tuned.

Did he have all the documentation for the bike? Just curious as most people save their dyno sheets.

Good question.  I'll know that answer as soon as the bike arrives off the carrier.  Should be within 2 weeks.

Bike doesn't need dyno tuned with just head pipe and slip ons IF they used the right download from the screaming eagle tuner (or other tuner for that matter). Harley has plenty of set ups for that bike including cams and heads , just select the correct one for the set up and load to ecm. Zippers does same with their set ups.  Be close enough to run without problems.
Sure more can be squeezed out on a dyno but not necessary

Hello, your question is a bit difficult to understand. In any event, based on your images, you have V&H Power Duals and based on the shape possibly V&H High Output mufflers. In other words, Power Duals is the name for the "x-pipe" header from Vance and Hines.

So yes.  Not just slip ons.  That's an exhust system sir. . . And you should get it properly tuned for best results. .  Stuart

There are many dealers that insist on installing the SE tuner even to upload a stage 1 map.

Necessary or not, that's the truth.

What's even sadder about that is that there's no HD "stage 1 map" for V&H pipes anyway, so unless it's been "tuned" the calibration's a crap-shoot anyway.

That's fair, but on the other side of the coin, the stage 1 map ran "fine" on my '14 - which had just this very setup.

Depends on whether you care how much power it's making or just that it's well-behaved I guess.

To be honest, I only want the bike to have a smooth and linear power/torque curve.  An extra 3-7 hp isn't as important to me.

Having the ability with PV, to view and compare Factory maps, Digital Tech stage 1 and SESPT stage 1 maps (14 to 16 FL's) i can tell you there is very little difference between them. The VE tables are EXACTLY the SAME, Main FA table have a very slight difference. So with a stage 1 map you are basically raising the rev limit for your money. Now as far as Harley is concerned a stage 1 would still have the cat installed. Having tuned MANY stage 1 Harley's with the cat removed there is a substantial difference in the VE tables when done. Especially in the upper load region. I would not ride with a stage 1 download with the cat removed.

Is there potential to hurt the engine that way?  Too lean?
