Dim Odometer and no shift numbers after service and wash
« on: August 10, 2016, 01:22:23 PM »

Hello all,

I had warranty service done (replaced left rear shock) and they washed the bike after.

On the ride home I noticed there was no shift numbers and no OD. When I got home in the garage I could just make out the tops of the OD numbers.

On my 2004 FLHTCSE when the OD went out the replaced the complete gauge.

Anyone else have this issue?

Cheers!

Water intrusion somewhere is too likely and potentially pervasive.   Need to let servicing shop know what they caused now and before time has elapsed enough to let them legitimately excuse themselves from the problem.

Have not had the issue but "gremlins" after washing are not unheard of.  You might try parking your bike in the sun and or useing a blower on the instruments to make sure they dry out.  See if that helps.  You'll see many here use a blower or cycle dryer after washing....

What Twolane said - Would call the shop to inform them of this issue ASAP.  Not an uncommon problem after a wash, unfortunately, if water was sprayed at electronics.

Thanks, just got off the phone with the service manager and scheduled another appt.

I didn't realize they do a complementary bike washing unless I tell them otherwise.

I prefer to wash the bike myself and I have that special dryer tool and let the bike dry before starting it up.
Oh and the top vent wont open, I'll have them check that out also!

Cheers!

Don't you just love it - having to take your bike back after they've worked on it to correct a new problem that they caused.  Been there, done that way, way too many times.   :(

Oh, Yea! The joys of the Harley Dealer Experience...

Seriously, I would much rather have a water intrusion issue exposed as the OP did, than rolling on I-95 at night in a Monsoon :nervous: :nervous:

At least when you work on your own at home there's not too far to go for recall work  :huepfenlol2: .

I cringe going in for warranty work at the dealer and miss my old bike (easier to work on).

Well only miss it for working on, new bike is a lot more fun to ride!

Just have to remember to check everything out before I leave the Dealer!

Why is everyone giving Harley a free pass on this?  The friggin' bike is supposed to be waterproof, seeing as how it is expected to survive out in the elements and get an occasional wash job.  You should be able to douse the entire bike without having water invade the wiring or other electrical/electronic components.

Perhaps Harley will come out with some Screamin' Eagle protective covers for all the critical areas they didn't bother to waterproof, so once again the customers can fix the problem themselves and on their own dime.

Jerry, while I agree with you on design is to get wet, not sure the design intended for a pressure washer to be turned directly on the instruments and seals.  Just a guess but could also be a bad weather seal.  Hopefully dealer will resolve the issue and have a few words with his wash crew.

Ron, while I agree it isn't a brilliant idea to use a pressure washer to clean a bike, I don't remember anyone saying the dealership actually used a pressure washer in this instance.  So far I've never seen a wash jockey in a bike dealership using a pressure washer, but considering the quality of the staff in many Harley dealerships I'd never say it never happens.

There are a lot of reports on various forums since the 2014's came out with failures of the left and right switch modules failing after being caught in the rain or after being washed normally.  There are also more than a few reports similar to this one, with problems in the infotainment system or gauges after getting wet.  Thus my previous post, since this kind of lousy product design and quality irritates the chit out of me.

I recently had my left side switch replaced for the second time.  The trigger / acc. switch stopped working so I could not access the trip-meter or range; nor could I turn the bike on accessory.  I was told a new part number was installed and I'm awaiting the updated right side switch.  I just got a call and it's in.  $237.42 each just for the parts!  I was told 3 weeks ago the left side part was not ready for release yet.  I'll try to get updated part #'s from the dealer.

Oddly I have seen a preasure washer being used at a local dealer when I was driving by. Not sure if it was delivered personnel or an outside vendor.
