2018 or not

Would you all that have bought either a 2017 or 2018 buy one again.  I’m thinking of trading my 2015 RG CVO Ultra on a 2018 Anniversary Limited.  But with all these horror stories of sumping it has me thinking to just stick with my Stage 4 TC.  Thanx in advance.

Sorry I can't answer from the perspective of owning a 2017 or 2018 M8 bike but I did give lots of thought into into the idea of buying one myself.
I first looked at why get rid of the old bike and couldn't find a valid reason since it rode great and could do everything a new bike could do. I grew out of the stage of needing the newest flashiest thing on the road with all the electronic bells and whistles and looked at the economics of loosing money on trading in or selling the old bike and spending big bucks on the new one.
When I realized it would be tens of thousands of dollars to get what? I realized I would rather spend that money on family things and help my retirement portfolio, not give that money to a dealership and only thing to show for my effort would be another vehicle that is going to do nothing extra but depreciate.
My father taught me many decades ago not to buy any first year vehicle since it's bound to have bugs that need to get worked out and that has proven good over the years. It seems to me that H-D may need more than one year to work out the bugs in new bikes.
All that being said it has been said by many people in various threads on even other ownership type websites that the majority of posts are from people finding answers for problems they are having and they post frequently so it can inflate the appearance of problems when in fact they may be in the minority. Face it, most people don't post things like "rode my bike today and nothing bad happened!".

Cough... I sold my 2015 FLTRUSE about 1.5 yrs ago to a private party for $29250. I bought a 2018 FLTRXS this last October and had them step it up to a 114" Stage III before delivery. I am happy with my decision.

I don't own a M8 equipped bike, but I'd like to comment anyway.  If your current bike is meeting your needs and is reliable (as much as possible considering the issues common to the TC), why take a chance on buying a major headache?  I would think the smart approach would be to wait and see if H-D actually comes up with a real fix for the sumping problem before pulling the trigger.  If that takes until the 2020 models (or later) come out, so be it.

But not all M8 are sumping.  Friend of mine has a M8 107 RG Ultra with 12,000 miles and no problems.  Seems like it’s just an isolated problem with some bikes.  Who knows.  We only here of the problem child’s on here.

We've had reports from several people who have had multiple engine failures (new engines each time), and there have been plenty of reports elsewhere on not just Stage III or IV engines, but bone stock 107's as well.  Yes we hear more about the bad ones than the good ones, but by the same token we don't hear about all of the bad ones either.  Only a small percentage of Harley owners post information on this or other forums.  There is no way to look at a bike on the showroom floor and know if that one will or will not experience this problem.  So it appears to be a Vegas crap shoot.  If you feel lucky, go for it.  I'm just saying I wouldn't buy until I'm convinced they have actually fixed the cause of the problem.  Heatwave is convinced that they built a new engine for him using redesigned 2019 engine cases and that is the real fix.  If that turns out to be the case, then waiting for a 2019 would seem to be a good idea.

I was thinking the same thing when I grabbed my 2017 last year. I did a stage 3 and no sumping issues. So far really happy I made the change and like the M8 motor a lot.

I have a 2018 and would buy it again.  I've ridden over 4000 miles since purchasing in March and love it.  I moved from a 2012 Ultra Limited and the improvements are noticeable. I have more long trips planned and can't wait.

4500 miles and no regrets whatsoever. I like all of the Rushmore and M8 upgrades including the one handed operation of things like cruise and saddle bag lids. The recent suspension upgrades are a big plus. I'm a big fan of the single cam motor which I've left stock so far except for the Fullsac headpipe, 2" cores, TTS and Steve's canned map.
I don't think I would touch the stage anything from Harley but I'm sure I won't be able to leave the internals alone for the long run.
I owned a 2011 SESG with a 113 upgrade with over 46k on it and REALLY liked that bike but I like this one much better.......so far!

Love my 2017 CVO Limited with Harley’s Stage II torque cam. Went from a 2014 CVO Limited to the 2017. Big improvement in low end torque as well as suspension.

Wait for the 2019 , just my 2cents ,two of my friends bought  2018 bikes one 107 and one 117 cvo.107 bike 1000 miles it blows oil and blue smoke from aircleaner when he starts the bike dealer dont no what to do and 117 bike engine lamp goes on from day 1 when he pick up his bike from dealer and code 001 shows up and the rev goes up to 1800 rpm dealer dont no what to do.

FYI - the mark up on new motorcycles at Harley is 20%. On a $44k bike that's about $8800. If they are offering $1000 off you should counteroffer.

Yes I know there is a big markup on them. But since it’s the Anniversary CVO Limited I don’t think they will budge much since only getting 1 of them.  But it has been sitting there for almost 2 weeks now.

I had a 2016 Limited CVO that I traded in on my 18 Limited CVO Anniversary.  Prior to trading, I read some of the horror stories of the M8 engine sumping, and was concerned that I might get one that sumps.  Another concern that I had was further depreciation on the 2016 model and any potential problems it might have with additional mileage put on it.  A lot of the good that I read about the M8 made me believe that I would leave the 2018 stock if I traded.  Also, I liked the color of the 2018 better than the 2016.  Therefore, I figured that if I traded, I could either buy an extended warranty from Harley if I thought I needed the extended warranty or I would simply trade the 2018 in on the latest and greatest at that time if the 2018 wasn't reliable.  I brought the 2018 home on April 21 and have put 1500 miles on it so far.  I would have been riding it more, but where I live, there has been so much rain the past month and it is continuing to rain.  I like the 2018 a lot better than my 2016.  As far as problems on the 2018, I have defective TPMS sensors that are being replaced under warranty.  During the 2 years that I owned the 2016, I did not have any problems out of it, but I only put 9800 miles on it because I rode other bikes more during that time. 

For my 2016, I paid, MSRP less $3,000 discount plus freight and tax.  I paid MSRP plus freight, setup and tax for the 2018.  I found 1 other 2018 Limited CVO Anniversary in an adjoining state for MSRP plus fees, but it wasn't suppose to be delivered to that dealer until June.  If the dealer is offering $1,000 off the 2018 model, that is a very nice incentive because I have read most of the 2018 CVO's have been selling for MSRP or over MSRP.

Can’t make up mind about this bike.  My concern is comfort level I’m 6’4”
and coming from a RG which has tons of room to a batwing fairing which seems crowded to me.  I was gonna change bars anyways.  I’m just not sure how fit on it after coming off a RG.  I need to test ride one again since it’s been awhile.

Im 6'2" and works fine for me in stock setup. You might have to do some modifications to bars. Batwings by nature feel a bit more cozy than the sharks and I've owned both. I prefer the batwings for some reason now but enjoyed the road glides when I had them.

So yours has the 114 or 117 motor.  How does it run. Have you done any upgrades or is it stock. I’m getting about $1500 back of MSRP for the 2018 Anniversay Limited CVO.  I’ve had some batwings in past as well. It can’t remember if I was crowded on it. They said would let me test ride it when I get back to town to see if would be ok.

114, bonestock with Rinehart slipons. Upgraded the stereo, swapped the whips for billet antenna's and that's it. Has plenty of go, don't really see any need to mess with it. 6000 trouble free miles so far, taken a couple of long trips with it. Ran it 85-90 mph for about 600 miles on one and no issues of any kind.

All valid points and smart decision in my opinion.

My bike is coming up on 6 model years old but it still looks like new and runs perfect. I occasionally think about updating to a new model but I'm not inclined to splurge for a way overpriced unreliable motorcycle. (Not to mention I spent another $12k to get my 2013 CVO where I was completely happy with it since the MOCO fell short in so many area's including performance, suspension, lighting, comfort, technology, etc).

Actually the new BMW K1600B being talked about all over the internet is very alluring. Its proven reliable, fast, good looking with all the technology you could ever want for ~$20k less at time of purchase. Even the new Honda Goldwing is creeping back into the picture with some Harley riders..... Both are a much better machine for a lot less money. I guess I just don't understand Harley economics.

IMHO the MOCO needs to step up their game and deliver true value at their price points or lower them aggressively otherwise they'll be the next iconic brand like Blockbuster or Kodak where the game and the consumer passes them. Introducing dozens of new models won't change their ultimate plight if they don't deliver quality and long term value.

Sadly they continue to overprice and under deliver which has never been a recipe for long term success in any business.  :soapbox:

truth is  you have not heard vey much  I would bet. not everyone who owns a m8 is on a forum saying how great they are , nor are they on a forum saying how many issues there are  it is what it really is .  isolated issues.  I rather doubt as isolated as you seem to think. not that its huge %, but hen I am not having access to real numbers either.  many m8 have had multiple issues and that's simple fact.   denial is not a fix for any of the issues.  the m8 has issues and these people who own those bike are not really seeing justice  if they get another so called up dated  or what ever and it fails again, and again they should be compensated for the trouble  in full ,

Sumping may not have happened to every M8; however, do you really want to take the chance with spending $25-45k and then rolling the dice?  Not me.

Been there and ….broke down more than once, lol!
Made my decision to not purchase the Anniversary Limited. Reason is I just upgraded my RG Ultra to Stage 4 back in November 17, put 14" bars on. All items couldn't be used on the M8 motor anyways. Plus I'm tired of paying HD over priced bikes & then in 2 years they loose almost 1/2 there value... I'm more comfortable on the RG anyways...Plus I don't ride often enough due to work obligations.

 In 1999 I was one of the first with a Twin Cam motor, picked up the bike from Dick's Harley Davidson in Rome, NY and off to Daytona I went for Bikeweek. Rode it mildly for a measly 179 miles at break-in speeds before I had major engine failure stranding me at the corner of RT 44 & Tomoka Farms Road at about 10pm 40 miles away from my truck and trailer. Not a great feeling....

 Next day I went to the MOCO Exhibition at the Daytona Beach Convention Center and sought out the Engine Design team. They responded well and had me bring my bike to Daytona Harley where they personally torn it down and rebuilt it in less than 24 hours. By now you may have guessed the problem as it was prevalent in the early TC motors......"the cam bolt fell out". Caused by a chitty design flaw that should have caught and corrected before ever releasing the TC motors.

 Never another issue with that motor and I even bumped it a bit to a 95" with 10.5:1 pistons and a 42mm Mikuni carb and a 2:1 V&H Pro-pipe and with that combo the bike flew. But my lesson was learned though, never jump on another new early release motor from the MOCO and wait a few years until all the bugs are worked out.

 Sadly, these M8's are a nothing to bank on which has kept me out of the buying pool to date. Plus IMHO I haven't seen a really over the top cool factory paint job in years. For $44k+ we should expect, demand and get a lot more!

If I had done more homework, (like I usually do before purchasing anything) I probably would not have traded my '16 CVO limited on the '18 CVO limited.   As much as I love the new CVO Limited Anniversary bike, and I have had no issues, however, I only have 1200 mis. on it,  Now I will constantly wonder every-time I go down the road if I'm going to end up in engine purgatory.   However, I have no one to blame but me for not doing better research.  I had heard nothing but good about the M8 motor before joining this forum. 

If I new then what I know now, I do not think I would spend the money.  Just my .02.  my '16 TC 110 was plenty of bike for me, I just wanted the anniversary bike.    Hopefully, I wont have any issues, I don't ride hard, generally no more than a couple hundred miles but there are times I go 5-600 on a trip.  I guess I will just ride it till it quits, and if the warranty expires, and there's no fix from the MOCO, I guess Ill put an S&S motor on it.

Well I made deal to get the 2018 Anniversary Limited.  I made an offer and they countered 1/2 off my offer. I’m getting about 2K back of MSRP and getting 24k for my RG CVO Ultra. Trade in was 21,300 and I’m getting $24k. So guess will be picking up today sometime.  Sure hope I’m making the rite decision.

Couldn't be happier after jumping off a 11 ultra to a 17...... 4500 miles in last month not a hiccup that was note worthy .......but I didn't buy brandnew...let first owner take the hit .1200 miles is good as new to me .  But if it does screw up.....It sure as hell won't be going to the dealership,for engine work.....I don't trust chrome cup holder installers .  I'll be back up and running in a week out of my pocket......but I can afford to I didn't pay dealer prices.  In a way the sumping issues all over the net got me a heck of a discount ...  Again I really would like to see one a part . If it's my own....so be it. Lol

Wishing I could go back 24 hrs and just not have traded mine. Guess time will tell if I’m gonna like it.  Need to make some changes like bars, seat  to fit me little better.

I'm starting to regret trading in my 2016 Road Glide Special with a 120 st for a 2018 CVO Road Glide. I've only got 628 miles on it and it broke down on me on the way from the shop from getting a saddle bag replaced. The Dealership is telling me that Harley wants them tear it down and inspect the top end. It's bone stock now but i have the stage 4 kit ordered but now I'm a little undecided if i want to do that if it going to keep sumping. Any suggestion?

   sounds very familiar to be honest.  hope you get a real repair instead of what many have been getting . that seems to be the same as what was taken out in way too many cases over and over a gain.

Wish you the best  in that  there is actually a fix for this bs so many have suffered through with no replacement bikes   to make sure you can ride

. DONT DO THE DEALER STAGE PROGRAM. Go find a good engine builder if u need reliable real hp so u don't end up like the warranty queens. Do you know what broke...simple scope and 10 mins of time can tell if top end needs to come apart.  If dealer has no scope....it's not a dealer you want working on your motor
Figure out what happened first.......a good 50% of the so called oiling problems aren't .....
628 miles is not exceptable .  I would be tempted too tell them too keep that one if it needs engine work.

Actually it's pretty much only a few...few too many for sure.  But u can visit a bunch of dealers around the country as I did way before buying.....nothing. Can hang out with many many techs and they haven't seen one yet....but are swamped with the questions from the nervous clan that think they need a new engine when nothing is wrong.  Most say the Internet forums have kept them busy with easy  tests that mean nothing . Actually easy work for them.  Few oil pump changes too  keep a real good customer.  But show up to a big show  and there are 1000s of m8s running like freight trains.  Rental guys with 400-500 oil cooled 107s not one failure...well they dud say the had a run in clutches that had hard pulls.
Oh well. Again off to empty another tank of gas in the morning........can't be happy happier  :orange:

I don't own a M8 equipped bike, but I'd like to comment anyway.  If your current bike is meeting your needs and is reliable (as much as possible considering the issues common to the TC), why take a chance on buying a major headache?  I would think the smart approach would be to wait and see if H-D actually comes up with a real fix for the sumping problem before pulling the trigger.  If that takes until the 2020 models (or later) come out, so be it.
