under the seat there appears to be a usb plug?

It's used to update the WHIM.

WHIM Update Instructions

    Make sure the motorcycle is completely off and in the Ignition Off state
    Remove the seat and locate the USB plug, this will be used for updating the WHIM software (note: if you purchased the WHIM as an accessory, your USB plug may be under the right side cover instead).
    Make sure you have the USB to USB micro cable provided with your headset.
    Run the Boom Audio Bluetooth Device Manager program.
    a. You will be instructed during the update process to plug the USB cable into     your computer do not plug it in prior to this.
    Follow the on screen instructions for updating your WHIM.
