When u pay for a tune, who's is it?
« on: March 17, 2019, 08:11:16 AM »

Horrible bike luck in Daytona. My ECM went out. Blah blah blah, new one installed by Rossmyers but, they didn't swap my tune in license over to the new ECM (guess that's not on them to do). My tuner gave me a thumb drive with license info on it and my original tune, not the one he dynoed for me. He said he normally doesn't give that info out. Maybe I'm wrong but, I want the darned tune I payed for. The fight with Dynojet over the ECM married license, that one I'm in with and expect to prevail. As for the tuner, I'll be damned if I'm paying him for the same work twice. I want my tune!  Do your tuners provide you with a copy if your map?

My tuner (DC Cycles, Red Bay, AL) gave me a thumb drive with the tune he did as well as charts.  He told me that if I ever had to replace my power commander that I could just load up the tune and be good to go.

IMO, you paid for your tune therefore you own it.  Custom tune files should always be provided to the one that paid for it.   Your tune is only accurate for your bike— it would be of no use to anyone else except for a starting point to develop a different custom tune.

When the bike was originally tuned.  Why didn't you ask for your custom calibration then?

I thought that was what was on the thumb drive that he handed me.

That sure sucks.  I am interested in knowing more about the PCM Failure?   What year and model is your bike?   What were the symptoms?     Were you aware that they are covered under warranty from Harley as part of the emission system for 5 years from the date of In Service?

I know that folks will say the warranty is voided because of the tune but the Warranty Books say, "THE FOLLOWING ITEMS ARE NOT COVERED BY THE EMISSION CONTROL SYSTEM LIMITED WARRANTY - Failures which arise as a result of misuse, tampering, alterations, accident, acts of nature, or improper or inadequate maintenance as specified in the Owner's Manual."

I would argue (perhaps unsuccessfully, but you can bet I would argue!)  that that they would have to prove the failure was a result of the tune and not hardware.

05 SEEG with a stage 4 build to 106. No warranty to use. Bike would drop the #2 cylinder every 3 seconds, fire for 3, drop for 3,,,,,,,,,,,. No symptoms prior to initial drop. I changed to ignition coil in a futal attempt.

My tuner has always provided a flash drive with both the charts and finished tune. The tune is also stored in the TTS module as well.

Good news! He found it in his computer. Big thanks to him for double checking. Now, to deal with Dynojet.

In Lafayette LA for training.  Will probably be over at SMHD Thursday or Friday afternoon, to order touch up paint and have a cigar and beer.

As for paying for a tune, I have always got a copy of the tune

Just so I'm clear, the person who tuned your bike is going to provide you with the correct map to re-flash your bike? It seemed like initially you meant he would not provide you the "dyno tuned" map he did.

I can vouch for Doc on this. I took my bike in to have the compensator replaced. When I got it back it ran like sh^*. downloaded the tune in it when returned from the dealer and sent it to Doc. Whatever it was it was not Doc's tune. He had me reload his tune from the thumb drive he had provided and I was back in business, running great. Thanks Doc!!

Well, all I can say at this point is,,, get a copy of your tune and licence. Turns out the map sent to me was a base to start with. Sure glad I gave the HD dealer $50 to put that on. Now I have to take my bike in for a new tune. It has been an expensive lesson.

. It has been an expensive lesson.
$100 and crap ride to and from to get ignition coil (not the problem)
$450 new ecm
$50 flash wrong MAP
$400 retune
$100 gas to trailer bike to and from tuner
$40 gas to and from HD for wrong MAP
14 hrs time lost
$$$$ spoiled trip to Daytona (spending time with good friends aside)
$$$$$$$$ Pissed off wife (she really hates the "H" brand)
= Lesson learned  :(

The shops I do head work for, provide the tune if you ask for it. They store them all too so if you
lose your thumb drive you're covered.

I had a tuner in Miami I asked about doing my Porsche.  I had built the motor from scratch.  Did an EFI conversion, dual plugged the heads, bigger turbo, exhaust, custom manifolds and fuel rails, etc.   I had set the car up.

Then hunted down some cat in Miami that had a tuner reputation.  He told me some of the same things.  Told me the tune was his, I had a real problem with that after doing the EFI conversion, custom manifold, CAMS, wastegates, Turbos, Intercoolers, you name it, my work.  I had the car running well from data file analysis but wanted to fine tune with someone better than me on the Dyno.  But he insisted the config file was his.  Had to find another tuner.  Never understood that nonsense.  definitely something to get straightened out first.
