Thundermax question

Did the first 220 miles on the TMAT, so it could learn my ways, and it all seemed fine.  However, at one point, I was caught in a stop-start queue of traffic for 15 mins or so.  Bike felt fine, but just after we got moving again (still v. slow) I noticed my Engine light was on.  As soon as we got a little speed up, however, it went out again.  Anyone else with a TMAT fitted ever see that?  The first thing to think of is temperature - but today was 40-45 degrees F and rainy.  I don't believe the motor was that hot.....  Bike felt fine, all the gauges read fine, just that the light came on.  Does the TM store a log of errors does anyone know?

(I'll cross post this in the Zippers conference in case they read it)

Good evening Jim,

Yes, the TM had a "Diagnostic trouble codes" in "module configuration" when the "Diagnostic Codes" option is selected in the windows "Tuning Map".

You've this information sheet 54 of the SmartLink IV Tuning Manuel.
It'll be interesting to look if you have an error code.

It means your engine got hot and the cylinder head temp went over 325 degree. Danny Fitzmaurice told me that this is one of the things the T-Max AT does for heat managment, it lets you know that the head is hot. The HD ECM does not do that, so you really have NO idea what the cyl head temp is. The reason the light went off when you moved is because the air pushed all the heat off the head fins, and that dropped the temp to a normal range. I asked Fitz what other things the T-Max did for heat management, but he really didn't elaborate other than to say that the Zippers ecm has a heat management operation.

I can only guess that maybe it dumps more fuel into the heads to cool them down, drops the idle and maybe changes the timing. DC Fireman Mike usually has all the inside scoop about Zippers stuff. Hopefully he will chime in and let us know the rest of the heat managment functions. I'm guessing that since your bike ran fine the whole time, you did not hurt or damage your engine.

Not sure what all of the response are either Mark.  But I know that idle drop is one of them.  Have seen it a couple of times now.  Not the single cylinder rumpety-rumpety-rumpety response that HD had used but just a lower idle across the board.  Low enough that the charging system like kicks back on.  No big deal of course.  With that and the idiot light indication the system actually does a pretty good job of letting you know when you're hot before you're too hot.

Thanks Mark.  I can't believe the temp got that high, though I guess it must have. I wasn't stuck too long in the stop-start traffic, & it was a cold rainy day,  so if it gets that hot in those conditions in such a short time, Gawd help me when I'm in city traffic in 100 degree heat! Sounds like no more "parade-dooty" for me!  :nervous:

Just curious, what's your afr at idle when warmed up?
I mean, what is it set at, and what do the O2s read at idle.

I see what you're thinking there, Mark - but sorry for my lack of knowledge on the TM/AT so far as I've just got it installed.  I used Map 377 for starters, then let the IAC do it's thang on first startup to 289F.  In essence, I guess I'm asking how do I find those figures to tell you?  :confused5:

Jim - HD do a fan which is a bolt on accesory. (pge 459ish in the P&A Cat) It does mean the horn needs to be relocated but the kit provides bolts for that.  It claims to drop the temp by up to 20 degrees in the oil tank and is used by the Police in Arizona.

It's an ugly looking bugger see my previous thread Fan Kit!!

Yes, it's been around a long time - only problem (besides it being ugly!) that I can think of is that it must surely blast hot air all over your leg!

I suspect that the rear cylinder must be running weak at some point - the muffler has turned slightly gold where it attached to the header. I'll peruse the SmartLink manual!
