Shoulda done this sooner
« on: July 11, 2007, 11:09:29 PM »

You may have seen earlier posts that had bike in for head gasket leak in rear cylinder and originally thought crank might be out.  Here is resolution - crank is reported to be OK; both head gaskets, rear cylinder & piston replaced, AND installed D&D Fatcats, roll-your-own a/c, and dyno tuned with sert.

Today is first ride except for home from dealer and all I can say is WOW what a difference this made.  Brian Rose of Bumpus H-D did the tune and got 106 ft lbs of torque flat as a pancake from 2,400 to 4,600 rpm and you can really tell it.  And motor is noticeably cooler.

Headed out to join HOG Posse Ride and covered 392 miles today - all interstate.  Checked mileage on one 140 stretch where I ran 80 mph the whole time - two up pulling Bushtec trailer loaded to the gills I got 33 mpg.  I'm happy with that.  I know without the trailer and at more sedate speed the mileage will be great.

So all in all, I am HAPPY!

That's great news, 33 mpg @ 80 mph, and the trailer, that is awsome. I always seem to use more gas anything over 70.

Sounds like you've found a spot on combination for your machine, Jerry.  It is my understanding those Fat Cats are a good bit quieter than the SE Pros you had on your melon.  How does J. Carolyn like it now?

I was told by a very good tuner that the twin cam motor is expected to get 40 mpg at 70 mph and loose 1 mpg per 1 mph after that.

Same here, B....got 40-41mpg two up and loaded on our trip when running the BRP, etc.  Get it on the interstate though, and it drops to 32-35, depending on how many trucks I have to get around.  Below 3K seems to be the big factor.  I'm not complaining about that though...bike is running fine, and cool enough.

No wonder I only get 33 MPG. I never run under 80, and usually much higher! And I thought it was just a crappy tune! Maybe it's me!!! ::) Hoist! 8)

You're on to something.  Rode the BRP today from Roanoke (gassed up there) to I-64 to Charlottesville - 147 miles, all but about 20 on the BRP running 40 to 45 and maybe 50 at times.  Filled up at Charlottesville and mpg was 44 - awesome!

Jerry,
Just checked your blog and see you aren't in Charlottesville for the night, but you did pass right by my subdivision on the way up Rt. 29 today. I could have met you on BRP and rode back as far as home w/you. Oh well, next time. Enjoy your trip.

Guys, all I can say is thank god I put the pipes on the bike and got 'er dyno tuned else we would have died today for sure.  Godawful traffic around Baltimore and then on I-95 / I-495 to Wilmington we got stuck in the mother of all traffic jams.  No chit, there we were for 15 miles in bumper to bumper move 10 feet and stop traffic (toll booths did not help traffic move either).  Bike got hot but not nearly as hot as it was before the tune.  I just cannot believe how much difference that made, lol.

Jerry,
When in that traffic, did you notice a decrease in idle when you were standing still?  In other words, even after the tune, did the bike go into heat management mode?  Do you have a digital oil temp gage?  Were you able to check and see just how hot the oil was?  Would like to compare your temps to mine.  I'm running about 225 when I stop after a long cruise.  I've noticed in town my idle will drop to 900 in traffic with oil temps up to 230.

Henry, yes I do (did) have a digital oil temp dipstick but it bit the dust, went out to lunch, etc.  I asked the tuner to leave eitms enabled (where reay cyl drops out if too hot).  Failed to verify with him if he did but thank so since seemed to me rear cyl did quit firing a few times.  Had to give it little extra throttle to get it going, but no problem.  No idea about oil temp but I have seen as high as 270 before tune.

270.  Wow!  That's hot.  I got up to 262 in Alexandria, VA right before my oil cooler line let go.  Apparently it had been leaking for quite some time, which resulted in the abnormally high temps.  Good to hear your's is running much better.  Best to you and your Queen on your ride across this Great Nation of our's.

We've ridden about 2,200 miles so far on the Posse Ride and I must say I really, really like the D&Ds.  But there is one big problem.  The way the rear cyl pipes curves around HQ's boot lace came untied Monday and the lace melted on the heat shield.  Got most of it off with lots and lots of effort then yesterday my rain suit pants got on it.  I have the good H-D gray two piece and the pant legs have protective material to guard against hot pipes but the D&D is too high and caught it just above the protective material.  Rain suit is looser than jeans and very, very hard not to get too close to that rear pipe when stopped.

So you guys that have them what do you do?

Update - have 5,600 miles on our road trip with the D&Ds.  They are awesome.  So very glad I chose to go with them.  No offense to the other very good choices, but for performance with reasonable sound (sounds good but not way, way loud) these are the best I've seen.  As you can tell, I REALLY like them. :2vrolijk_21:

Great report Jerry on the tune, the pipes, the AC and your enjoyment of all that and the scenery you are seeing while doing it.  Glad you got to ride in our back yard.  Of course we were on our way to BC when you went by, but I saw your post that you were just there too.  Isn't it gorgeous.  Catch you and HD on the road.

Reset trip meter at fillups. Next time you fill up divide miles travelled by gallons you put in to fill back up will give you Miles Per Gallon (MPG's). To be as accurate as you can always try to fill up to the same mark on bike. I sit bike up straight and fill up to just below the neck of the tank where the nozzle goes in. My recent trip I had tanks where I got 49 MPG to 37 MPG. Lot of truth to what has been said about going over 60 mph burns more gas. ;D

You could lose your HBRR credentials for putting around like that.

Jamey we were on a US highway that had a speed limit of 50 - 60, and the riders I was with were in no hurry so we took our time. I was really amazed when I filled up and saw those MPG's. Normal for me is 35 - 40 MPG.

That's easy for you guys to say bloody European Union, everything is in chuffing litres yet I was brought up miles and gallons.  Must remember to add the calculator the next time out, with the waterproofs, the T shirt, the tool kit, the picnic, the wifes hair brush, oh yes and the kitchen sink

Guys, gas is expensive up here in Canada where we've been riding.  Paying between about $1.20 and up to as high as $1.47 Canadian per liter.  That equates to about $4.25 to $5.25 per gallon in U.S. dollars.  Guess I can't squak at premium for $3.25 per gallon back home.  Looks cheap in comparison.
