SERT
« on: August 27, 2007, 11:30:02 AM »

I am going to but a laptop just to run sert software...Any suggestions?
Will it load to windows vista or home edition or whatever software is the "in" thing nowadays?
Sorry to be so obtuse, I have been an Apple Head so long,  I have lost touch with the mainstream.
Thanks for your time.

Are you going to use the loptop for much else? There are a few good Toshiba lap tops out there. Also you can get a refurbished one at a good price, just need to looks around.

As for Vista, I don't have it, but have many friends that do. They really like it, but since most programs don't support it, you kind of on your own if you do have problems. If you call most support for software, as soon as you state your running Vista, they say we don't support it. On the other side, by brother said that he has had few problems and has been able to resolve all. At this time just beware, because you get little or no support for most programs you run under it.

Nope, I don't need to drop 1100 on a mac laptop.
Circuit City has an acer for $369, has vista home.

SERT should run under XP as well, and it's been around long enough to be pretty stable.  Since you're not really worried about speed in this application, you should be able to pick up a cheap laptop, or even a used one from somebody upgrading.  After a year or two, they're all just boat anchors anyway.

Whatever you get, it has to have the serial port with the male pins sticking out to connect to the cable that hooks to the bike.

Vista is the next generation...XP has been around for a few years now.  Everything out there will run on Windows XP, whether it's the Professional addition or the home version.

Thanks for the feedback....I just dug up a, get this,  gateway solo out of a long forgotten supply closet.

It turned on and is running on ac power right now.

Windows NT/98, Pent II, whopping 32 meg ram & 500 mb free space. usb and serial.

I do believe it would support the sert software, no?  The price to borrow it is right...

The software(cd) may be installed on different machines, no?

Holy cow!

In the manual :

software requires Windows NT4 w/SP4 or above, or Windows 2000. It is recommended that the operating system have current Windows updates installed.
Minimum system hardware requirements:
• Pentium-class PC at 133 MHz or above
• Display Resolution 800 x 600 or above, 1024 x 768 recommended
• One available serial RS-232 Communication port
Memory:
• Win NT 4.0 - 64 MB
• Win 2000/ME/XP - 128M
• Hard Drive Space Required: 10 MB
Important: Note the requirement for a RS-232 serial port to work due to communication timing requirements.

Yea, you can load the software to different PC's, but if you make changes to your map, you need to save it and send it to a central PC, that you'll keep access to.

Might, might not, it's not supported by the software, but might, just no support on Vista. I'd stay away from Vista, unless you like to play around getting things to work on your PC, I'd stick with XP, for now.

I second that....the IT Wizards here at work do not recommend swapping to Vista at his point in time.  Too many issues...
