Tuning '08 110" CVO on the DynoCam this weekend
« on: November 16, 2007, 03:44:11 PM »

At www.BigBoyzDynoTuning.com there is a "Live Web Cams" link.  This weekend we will be in the Dyno Shop tuning a '08 110" CVO and you are welcome to log on to the cam and watch.

The camera works best with Internet Explorer.  It will require an active X install and all the instructions are on the web cam page, very easy to do.  If anyone has problems getting the camera to work, post back here and I will do my best to help.

We're getting ready to start tuning.  The camera is on and has sound and control so it can be moved around.  If you have any questions feel free to post them here and I will check back during the day.  I hope a few will check it out.  Thanks !

For those watching we just completed the first run.  We run 1500 rpm to 3000 rpm in 250 rpm increments at 10% throttle position and 15%, 20%, 25%, 30%, 40%, 60%, 80% and 100%.  Sniffing both cylinders individually.

Now we are reviewing the data and figuring out what changes we'll need to make for the next run.  The next run will be the same as the last so we can compare what effect the changes had.

It will take about 20 minutes or so to evaluate the data.

Yesterday we did all the fuel for 1500-3000 rpm range.  That consisted of 4 runs, 1 tank of fuel and 147 miles.  In some partial throttle areas we gained 12-14lbs of torque over the dealer loaded SERT stage 1 map.

Today we'll do 3500 rpm and up.  We made many initial timing changes but will fine tune the timing for the entire range after the fuel is done.  We'll also fine tune the lower RPM and throttle positions, below 1500 rpm and below 10%.

Damn, two days and literally hundreds of miles.  Almost afraid to ask what it costs to get a tune there.  That's a lot of time to pay for.

We are going a little slower than normal because we are testing a new device on the gas analyzer.  Ultimately it will be a time saver.  We flat rate our tunes so time isn't a factor, we enjoy what we do, it isn't just a matter of money.

The RED line is the base run with the SERT Stage 1 CVO 200UI001
Max SAE HP:  92.50  @  4940 RPM.
Max Ft/Lbs:  108.93  @  3680 RPM.

The BLUE line is the same map after tuning.
Max SAE HP:  93.87  @  4920 RPM.
Max Ft/Lbs:  115.65  @  3390 RPM.

Because the stock cams fall off early we didn't run it past 5000 rpm on comparison runs, there really was no need to.

Also note this is only at WOT.  I do have some finish tuned part throttle runs I will post in a few minutes.

The graph looks better if you click on it for full size, I noticed that after posting it.

The RED line represents 35% throttle

The BLUE line is 62% throttle

The GREEN line 80% throttle

The YELLOW line is 100% throttle

These are all finish tuned runs

This was done with a SERT.  We prefer the SERT over any other tuning method.

Are you going to work on the dip @2200 or so??

The dip on the graph is a little deceiving.  The graph shows sweep tests and not step tests.  We use all step tests for tuning.  With a high inertia dyno, during a sweep test, it measures the amount of time it takes to accelerate a heavy drum through a given rpm range and then calculates torque.  Our dyno is a low inertia dyno and uses an eddy current brake to apply a load during a sweep test.  To do this it holds the engine at a given rate of acceleration.  Note the rate of acceleration line on the bottom of the graph.  During the sweep test it is held at 20 ft/sec2 and then measures a load cell to get a torque reading.  The line shows the rate of acceleration at 20.  When initially holding the drum back before releasing it for the sweep test, it holds it at about 25 ft/sec2 and then pulls it down for the run.  For the short time that it is pulling the rate of acceleration down, at the beginning of the run, the load cell is measuring an increased amount of torque.  You'll note the acceleration line at the bottom directly correlates with the perceived dip in the graph.

It had slip-ons and an air cleaner but other than that, stock.
