Vance & Hines Pro Pipe HS fails again
« on: December 26, 2007, 06:57:15 PM »

For those still thinking about a 2 into 1 pipe it may be useful to know about my 2nd failed Vance & Hines Pro Pipe failure. It went in the same place as last time in that the end cap "blew off" whilst riding. As last time the hole that takes the retaining screw was elongated from a circle to an oval and then the metal tore to the end of the pipe. Last time Wally's Cycle World said that V&H wouldn't warranty this so I had to buy a whole new muffler.

I did a search and notice that JCZ reported the same failure. You can see his comments below in red.

I am power hungry and weight shy enough to stick with 2:1 but I am going to switch the whole lot (headers & all) to a different manufacturer. Comments welcome advising two into one pipes. D&D seem a popular choice but I just wanna ride without fuss.

Installed the Vance & Hines Pro Pipe on my 04 SEEG after my accident a couple of years ago.  I wasn't able to ride it for most of that year, due to healing from the injuries.  Once I did start riding it......the screw holes in the end cap stripped out and I had to buy a new end cap and baffle assembly after only about 2,000 miles (already out of warranty).

A couple months ago I noticed that same particular rattle, telling me that the end cap is loose again.  Upon closer inspection, I notice that there is a wedge shaped piece broke out of the megaphone part of the exhaust and that the screw hole on the inside is now elongated.

I contacted Vance & Hines and explained the situation.  Several emails went back and forth and a detailed time line with receipt dates, milage in between, etc. was provided.  Vance & Hines said "sorry, there's nothing that we can do.........it's out of warranty".  I told them that the piece that broke out shouldn't break out if I owned (and rode) the bike for five years, let alone a year and a half.

Just thought I should share this experience that V&H does not stand behind their product in this kind of failure.

Now, I'm looking for the megaphone section of a V&H Pro Pipe.  If I have to buy it new, I'll change out the whole exhaust system.

A good friend had the same failure - and same result with V&H...

Buy D&D Fatcat 2:1.  Quality pipe that produces power and torque.

Here's my scoop and poop.
Do like Pete says, buy the D&D.
If I was to buy another one it would be a D&D.
Yes there is a ProPipe on the Lowrider and has been for the past 15K miles and never had an issue.
Yes there is a ProPipe on the SERG and haven't had an issue but to spend more money for another it would be on a D&D.

It has got me wondering whether my higher compression of 10.1 to 1 is doing it.

Tony, just a couple weeks ago I ordered a set of exhaust after making the decision to go 2-1.  Strictly FWIW; did a few week's relatively diligent homework.  After all of it ordered the D&D Fatcats.

If they're good enough fou you 2Lane I'm getting some. I am coming to Florida next week so I can save the carriage.

What is the correct part number with the optimum baffle choice?

The Lowrider C/R is much higher than yours!
That's not it!

if you are wanting quiet baffle, add q to end of part number. if black, add b, if black/quiet, add qb  and as posted abave, it aint the compression!

So are these things just poorly designed?

Yes, poor design.  I think Vance and Hines knows it, to.  When I explained to them the low miles that I'd ridden my bike (even thought time wise it was out of warranty......barely), they didn't give it any consideration.

It's not the compression.......I have stock compression.  It's the product.

The next exhaust that I'll buy will be from Freedom Cycles in Reno.  I've saw the new exhaust first hand and it was very apparent that it's a quality job leaps and bounds above the others.  That, coupled with the cooling factor, low noise and high performance makes it the exhaust system of choice for me.

By the way, AK may have a barely used Thunderheader with heatshields that he's willing to sell.

**EDIT**  Almost forgot to say.......I've gone through two of those end caps, now, too. :nixweiss:  Vance and Hines sucks!

My husband has the DnD FC and they are great.  I have ruined my VH propipe.  If I get new pipes, I'd love to consier the FC, but they seem to have a slight curve out, just under the right thigh.  Does anyone a bit shorter in stature have that same problem?

Candy, I've got a set of FatCat 2-1 exhaust that should be here the first of the week.  Probably have it installed before mid month.  It'll be whatever their latest iteration of the part is.  I'll eyeball it very closely for you and will try to get a pic that illustrates the area you're asking about.  Perhaps it is something that has been altered in later production?

Thanks for giving me the heads up on the Thunderheader for sale.

I originally chose the ProPipe on the advice of BC Gerolamy as it suited my head and cam package. I had steared them towards the Thunderheader but they highlighted that it suffers a power dip in the earlier part of the rev range. As I have gone on to look at peoples dyno sheets this seems to be true so I have this little anti-thunderheader sentiment.

However I am sold on 2:1 for the torque benefits and I like the fact that it will be lighter. I am not going to buy V&H again even though it means I have to buy headers and all to replace.

I am vexed with Vance & Hines to say the least.
