Wider rear tire?
« on: May 25, 2008, 12:23:33 PM »

Can anyone help explain tire sizing to me? I am currently running the Michelin commanders on my 07 Ultra.
They have 4K miles on them. Just like all the dunlops I've been through, the back tire is going to need to be replaced at about 6500 to 7K. My question is can I replace a MT90B 16 74H with a 150/80-16-77H.

this is general not a good idea. a larger tyre will cause the tyre to bow at an increasing angle due to the rim size not changing... therefore making the contact patch on the center of the tyre smaller when running straight down the road, and making the angle of the tread on the sides of the tyre steeper....

why are you wanting to do this? what is the benefit?

Just thought I might try something different, didn't know the contact patch would be reduced. Actually thought it would be increased, might help some with handling. My tour pac is detachable and off most of the time. Therefore weight isn't a huge issue. Thanks for the info thats why I like this site eveybody is so helpful.

I'll have to look into that. I told my dealer I wanted to try the michelins and the MT90 16 74H is what they put on. I have been pleased with the performance compared to whatever the stock dunlops were. The only dissapointment I have is on grooved surfaces(i.e.  a milled road)  very loose feeling. Other than that wet weather traction is great everything else is fine. Back to the wider tire issue a buddy of mine put a  150 dunlop on his street glide and claims it handles much better thats why I was concidering trying  the wider tire.

I installed a 150 on my ultra but also went to a 4.25 rear wheel works great.
