D&D FatCats
« on: April 16, 2009, 09:39:58 PM »

Never thought a set of pipes would be so hard to put on.

Minimal instructions not enough hardware to do the install.
Hardware that didn't line up or have the holes drilled the right size.

Covers fit well but don't line up with each other.

Don't have the bags back on yet but it looks like the pipe will be a 1/2" lower then the V&H ovals, which will make the D&D look even lower due to their size and shape.

Had my doubts about how quiet they would be too - geez - you can stick a 1 1/2" pipe up through the center!.

I have the quiet baffles and in the garage and driveway they sound pretty good. Seem to be much quieter then my V&H's and that was what I was looking for.

What hardware was missing Duane?  Fortunately I didn't have any install issues with either of mine so am curious what the differences might be.

Just an FYI.  If the covers not mating well you mention is that little intermediate cover to the large heat shield you might try loosening the heat shield to allow for some install wiggle.  Doing that made both of mine better than they would have been out of the box.

Only one bolt long enough to use the "required" spacer for the rear hangers - and those spacers should have been chromed.
1/2" Allen screws for the main hanger - no nut for said screw.

Bracket that mounts on the trans is about twice as thick as the HD bracket, not all that bad but the trap door has a Allen screw right in the middle - bottom that is proud of the surface. So I had to use washers behind the plate, so the trap door screws were not long enough. And the slot for the 1/2" Allen screw was only about 7/16".

Huh?
Only two covers - front pipe - back pipe. Covers do not line up nor are they flush with each other at the muffler. And there is no wiggle room.

On the plus side, there is plenty of room around the brake pedal.

Pictures at 11.

Weird.  Completely different than either of my installs  Neither had any spacer at the rear nor mention of it in the docs.  Also no obstruction at the tranny bracket.  Might that be a Baker difference?

1) I don't like the spacers - the muffler is on a slight downward angle - enough that a 1/2" spacer at the hanger is required - enough that is is easily visible that the gap between the bag and pipe is not even.

2) The baker has an Allen screw in the trap door between two 5/16" Allen screws. The stock does not. wasn't an issue before because of the way the stock bracket is made

Looks like you're going to have to "Duaneasize" the exhaust Duane.  All the D&D's I have seen look like they fit well.  All too loud for me but it will be interesting to hear how the quiet baffle compares to the V&H TD's and ovals.  You may have to make a bracket or tweak something but you will get them to your liking.   :2vrolijk_21:

Bob - so far I like the sound. Little deeper and quieter then the V&H ovals. Haven't really gone WOT yet. Last week I had the dip stick fly out at a 6K shift - what a mess - so I'm a little gun shy at the moment.

Left the house at about 6:30 this am for work - let the bike warm up just a bit more then normal as it is quieter.

Looking down the muffler though I never would have guessed it.

The work around for the center bracket is a few flat washers - the work around for the "down angle" is - well I just don't know. The muffler position is set by the head pipe location and that doesn't change.

Hey Duane

Hope you get the angle of the dangle to your liking. From your post, my money's on you'll get er done.

Which baffle you got, the 502-32BQ standard Quiet or 502-32BBQ Big Boar Quiet?

Hope to have mine back next week.

This is the Baker trap door with an "extra screw" The screw is only a problem because it is not flush wit the trap door, and only with the new D&D exhaust bracket.

Because I had to add washers behind the D&D plate and because the plate is thicker I had to find new longer bolts.

This is the reason, the stock mounting plate is thinner and "U" shaped

Included spacers (but only one included bolt) I had to use to line up the exhaust. Will need to get these chromed next winter  :nixweiss:
