New Zipper's High Flow Air Filters Now In Stock!
« on: December 01, 2005, 12:43:41 AM »

Finally available, due to popular demand!  Washable, Made in USA high flow filter upgrade for the Factory Chicken air cleaner kit.  Filter is 5/8" deeper, flows 9+% more air, includes mounting hardware and........fits under the stock football cover!  We also have them to fit the ThunderJet 50 and 54mm throttle bodies, S&S E/G/D carbs and Mikunis.

http://www.zippersperformance.com/catalogue/showproduct.asp?cat=588&prod=2155

(Harry, yours is on the way...... ;)

And if you don't want the wider filter but do want a washable replacement for the standard SE filter, we now have them also.

Thanks, JK

Retail price is $62.49.  We would certainly entertain some sort of group discount.  JK

I suspect that the filters will be a "hot" purchase item with our bunch.  If you could post the group discount under the vendor thread, along with ordering info it would be appreciated.

The one question I have about it is whether it causes the "football" cover to stick out over the floorboards another 5/8"?  Or is it recessed such that there is no additional overhang of the cover?  Thanks for any information on this.

jd,

The higher flow unit will cause the cover to stick out an additional 5/8".  That will be an issue for me, so I'll be ordering the standard size filter.  Still a big improvement over the cheapo paper element that came with the SE kit.

Jerry, the website listing from Zippers doesn't seem to suggest a stock depth filter.  Only the piece 5/8" deeper filter.  Are you seeing a different product listing someplace else on their site?

Try this link:  http://www.zippersperformance.com/catalogue/showproduct.asp?cat=588&prod=2152    The actual K&N part number for this is HD-0800.

They're not putting a washable oiled gauze-type filter in the SE kits anymore?  I knew they had quit using K&Ns, but I thought they just switched to a different (though similar) supplier. [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

The new one Harley is selling is a piece of CHIT.   I had bought one and within 2 weeks the blue foam material had already broken down and was falling apart.  This is a DRY FILTER.   I finally was able to buy another K&N from a friend of mine.

If you had the K&N or want the K&N style you can purchase the Ness Big Sucker Filter it fits perfectly and it has the same bolt pattern as the K&N and Harley do.   I tested this yesterday at Millers Custom Parts with their parts guy.

Personally I am going to switch over to the Zippers due to the increased air flow and the fact that the air cleaner I have from them currently is nearing a year old and has given me 0 reasons to switch to anything else.

Thumper,

I don't think you are going to have any issues with the increased air.   Not saying you wont, but I doubt it if you already have the screaming eagle air filter or ness big sucker air filter.  If you want to test something very limitedly in your garage or driveway try taking off your air cleaner and run the bike without it for a few minutes.   I did not say go out on the road and take it for a drive.  This will be more air than you would have with the air cleaner, but you will see if starting and idling will give you issues :).  It may help you decide.

Don,

Cryptic is so much more fun, cause when they get it, it makes sense.   Until then its still cryptic.

:)

but alas I gave in and fixed it the they in this case = HARLEY DAVIDSON    Their newest replacement for the K&N Filter that used to come with the SE High Flow Air cleaner now = a paper piece of chit.

/The End.

John K.,

I received the Throttle Body and the Air Cleaner and backing plate today from UPS.  I just spoke to Jim and we will probably install it early next week when he has time to redyno it.

Thanks again,

Big,

My affiliation is I like their products and I helped a friend of mine down the path to become a reseller for them as well as an authorized dyno tuning center for the thundermax ecm.  Until Bragging Rights Mobile Dyno became an authorized center we had none in the South East.

As far as the cams / heads go I happened to meet with the owner of Zippers at biketoberfest and it just so happened he needed heads to run a prototype on since ours are vin restricted and I happened to have 2 sets in the garage on top of the 2 sets on my bikes.   From there a friendly relationship grew and since I have Jim with the dyno not to far from me he asked if we could test them in a CVO bike to get results for them.   I said I would love to be on the ground floor and thus you have your answer.  I figured not only does it help me, but may help lots of other guys here too.

If you need more info your welcome to email me at unbalanced@bellsouth.net

Big Daddy,

The Ness filter comes in two flavors; the stage one is the same size as the SE part, and the stage two is the higher flow part similar to the Zipper's filter mentioned here.  [highlight]Clarification: similar in flow, not size.  The Zipper's is tapered to fit with a stock cover, the Ness is not and requires an 8" cover.  See photo, Stage 1 top, Stage 2 bottom.[/highlight]

New H-D air filter = DUNG!

I just found out from a tech. at my dealer that HD wanted K&N to produce all their air filters; that includes all stock production bikes plus the SE line. K&N said they could never supply all the filters without building a new factory. So HD decided to go elswhere. And that the new paper element is on the fourth upgrade.
I think I'll pass on the new paper filter from HD and stick with K&N especially the new one from Zippers.

No A/F on those runs, just wanted a quick look at what the airflow change would do to power.  We will be using this bike to make a map or two with the Thundermax, so we weren't real worried about A/F since all that will change with the mapping.  With the stock ECM, you already know it's lean!  JK

What about some info on the design of the backing plate?  Are the head breathers internal?  Is there a venturi ring on the intake to help velocity?

You can put it on your SE Air Cleaner Backplate all you need to buy is the Air Cleaner and that comes with 3 new stantions  and one spacer that allows you to use the deeper air cleaner.   I just received one from Zippers for the pumpkin to try it with the test cam.

Originally I had posted pictures this was a whole kit due to I didnt have a stock backplate or screaming eagle backplate which this air cleaner works with.

If I have a stock A/C, Do I you have to buy SE kit and then upgrade to Zippers filter or is Zippers a complete kit?

No, you don't have to buy the SE kit then spend more $$ on the upgrade.  We (Zippers) have several options available:

# 117-296 - Upgrade for the factory SE filter.  Includes 5/8" deeper filter and hardware $62.49 ($55.00 if you mention this site).  You must have the SE kit already to use this kit.

# 117-440 - Includes cast SE-style backplate and internal breathers, the deeper, cleanable filter and mounting hardware for $94.95.

# 117-440C -  same as above with CHROME backplate, $119.95

# 117-212 - Includes CNC machined billet backplate, same deep filter, earlier style chrome 2:1 breather tube, chrome support brackets & hardware $169.95  Some folks prefer this breather style because you can route the breather line to atmosphere instead of internally if desired.

All accept the stock "football" cover.  I put one on an '06 FLHTCSE 103 and was not as pleased with the newer "oval" cover fit (the one with the bird emblem in the middle held on with 2 screws).  The new cover does not have the solid round indentation on the inside of the cover for the filter to seat 360 degrees on.  It seated at the top and bottom of the rubber outer portion of the filter element.  It seems OK initially, but may loosen up over time without some sort of hard foam or rubber insert attached to the element or cover backside.  I'd imagine the SE filter would have the same fit as the mounting design is the same.  Guess the styling department didn't talk to the performance department on that one.....JK

Duane, there's always the possibility of little glitches occasionally surprising us.  We all know that kind of stuff of happens.  But, sometimes, I'm just a dipstick too  [smiley=huepfenlol2.gif]

If I replace the stock air filter coming on my '06 SE ULTRA with the new K&N stock replacement filter, will I need to have any changes made to the mapping on the engine to accomodate the slight increase in air flow?  Stock pipe will still be on the bike.  Thanks! [smiley=confused5.gif]

Generally speaking you can change pipes and get away with it.  When you add more air you tend to lean the engine out and since most harleys come lean to begin with I would recommend some type of compensation for it.   IE Whether it be Download / Race Tuner / Power Commander or Thundermax.

As a new guy on this site I just caught this post.

Is the dyno chart right? It seems the SE AC has essentially no value over Stock AC. Just costs a little torque down low.... :-?

Is this so?

Update: Since this thread is about Zippers Hi-Flo Air Filters and if anyone is like me that ordered one along w/there cams just wanted to let you know (spoke to Zippers today) they are back ordered and should arrive within 7 - 10 days. Good news is my cams and other products are sitting on shelf waiting to be shipped. I could have had them shipped today, but because of the discount that we have received and the preferential treatment (first to get cams) I opted to wait until all my order was in to not cost Zippers extra shipping.

I have received an email from Zippers saying my backordered items were in & ready for shipping.
That means:
The high flow air filters & gear drives are back in stock as at Thursday afternoon April 13th 2006

I was going to put date as 13/4/06 but didnt want to confuse anyone!

Cheers

I have a Stage one breather (latest edition) with an Air Wing air cleaner cover. Will this air cleaner fit under that cover ?  Linkk says it will fit under the stock cover so I'm not sure

Thanks

I've been told it will as I have the same cover as you. It will make the cover stick out a little further due to the filter being a little deeper/longer. For me that is not a problem because I'm not pressed for leg room in reaching floorboard. Hopefully I will get my parts this week, and I've got an appointment a week from Monday to have install done.

If all goes well I should be. I didn't want you to have to carry all those extra balloons of flour so you could throw them off at exits so I'd know which one you pulled off on. :D

That's right, multi mile wheelies rolling past patrol cruisers and beers duct taped to the sides of the helmets with those long twisties straws running to the mouth so a rider can keep hydrated on that warm sunny day we'll have heading south.  Radio cranked up.  Feet on the pegs.  It's gonna be a good day to ride  [smiley=drink.gif] .

But right now I got to put this bunny suit back on and get over to my nieces or I'm going to be late.  Can't have that!
