120 CI engines!!!
« on: December 03, 2010, 01:34:33 PM »

Guys, one of my buddies who ordered a FLXHSE2 told me he is thinking of waiting for 2012 models since they will probably come with 120 CI engines?!! Did anyone hear about that? I heard HD is already selling SE 120 CI engines....

Yes they are selling them as a race only item not for street use. Doesn't mean you can't install one since I have one in my 2010 FLHX. Don't expect the super high TQ and HP numbers advertised. Does make a huge improvement over the 96 engine I took out.

Thanks man.
Here in Egypt the dealer sells them as street legal. My idea is since they introduced the 103ci on some touring bikes, it would make sense if next year they introduced CVO with 120ci engines.

What kind of numbers are you getting?

I am getting 120HP and 123TQ on a conservative dyno. Not bad but there are many 103 and 107 getting the same or better.

So what u're saying is that with engine mods I can get higher output from the 110 CI engine? I heard about the 255 cams and 58 mm throttle body. Anything else to suggest?

If you replicate the parameters used for the advertised numbers - same throttle body, same exhaust, same tune - you will get the advertised numbers.  I know a couple who have achieved it....

Absolutely not.  The heads (untouched) on the crate 120 are far superior to the heads on the 110.  Out of the box, the 120 produces great numbers.  Now if the 120 MVA heads were further ported, cams, good exhaust, throttle body - I suspect the 120 would push or exceed 140/140 numbers.

The heads (untouched) on the crate 120 are far superior to the heads on the 110.

Why is that?

Let me explain so this doesn't sound like a slam of Sadunbar. Not my intention.
Those MVA heads work quite well on the 120r motor. That does not assure they would produce equally well or even decent on a 103-110" motor with 4.375 stroke with a peak rpm that we seem to see as about 5,500 rpm. My comment is based on what the motor demands and each motor, each intake tract, has to be considered for it's physical characteristics and the application. This is not a slam on the parts either they have their place and would be right at home on a 124 or 131 motor as well. I just wished they would have used bronze guides. Notice the cam that is supplied with the 120r. The timing is a little non-traditional but IMO that is purposeful as well to suit these heads and motor configuration. The dyno I provided is proof that just some blueprinting can further wake these up.

Do the SE120R's have the crank runout issues of the rest of the HD line up?

I have not heard of crank run outs on the 2010 counterbalanced motor???
I am pulling right at 102hp and 124lb of torque at 3600rpm hp tops out at about 5300rpm but the torque drops down to about 105lbs but I can pass just about anything as long as I am in the powerband

be carefull. It all depends on the experience your dealer has in tuning the ECU. If that's around Zero, your best choice will be to go with one of the SE stage kits for wich a "canned" map is provided and may be optimized by some "autotuning" devices like the smarttune of SEPST or similar tools of TTS. You may expect significant gains already with just cat-less header, good pipes and some smarttune as you already got a free flowing A/C.

If on the other hand your dealer is an experienced tuner just ask him for his advice. If you read a little on this board you will find some very impressive results achieved with a good mix of tuning parts - and a good map.

But be carefull again: that may easily sum up for more $ than you would have to spend for a new 120  ;)

So my pipes & SE Intake (Std is more restrictive than the SE) and tuned with a SEPST to me is just as good and alot cheaper then putting in a 120 IMO

I spent 1600.00 on all of it including the dyno tune
I have not seen a dyno on the 120 (well an actual one) attached is mine of my 110 Conv

Something is wrong with that dyno run. The HP & Torque are crossing at around 4300.

They didn't synchronize the left and right column's - and the scaling between the two columns is different - that's all.  Nothing wrong with the numbers - just not the typical presentation...   :2vrolijk_21:

Wow!!! If I'm not reading it wrong you got 123 TQ and 100 HP with a stock 110" with the big radius 2-2 pipes? Geez, if that's correct then I'm not so worried about TQ and HP spec comparisons between 2-1 / 2-1-2 and a set of V & H true duals and high output slipon.

Let's me know if I'm looking at something wrong here.

While the numbers are nice,  you might consider getting a comparsion from another Dynojet 250i.  There are some out there that show a bit higher than the rest.

Here is a 120 "blueprinted" and a good tune and pipe. The heads were reworked for this one and the original cam Ebayed.

SBB I am using the HD-SE 58mm throttle body and the highest flow SE injectors. Using the SE Heavy Breather and a SERT. The blue dyno run was using nothing but a velocity stack on the throttle body with no air filter, the red dyno run was with the heavy breather. Nothing else done to the engine except the SE race clutch.

Wait, wait wait! I still want to know about the motor but now I want to see how the "feud" plays out. I see what getting in his head starts to do.

They didn't synchronize the left and right column's - and the scaling between the two columns is different - that's all.  Nothing wrong with the numbers - just not the typical presentation...   :2vrolijk_21:

Thanks. I knew it did not look right but did not know what the cause of it was

does make sense but how many years have we been hearing that harley was going to introduce a watercooled touring motor.  I'm not holding my breath for one in a factory bike.  but 54  for a crate motor is what I wish I had done .  I just spent 6000 to rebuild my mototor with new crank it only 103.  that darn catalog came out a week after my bike left the shop.
