Syn3 Oil Analysis Completed
« on: July 23, 2004, 11:28:58 AM »

The long awaited oil samples have been completed and I though you would all like to see the results. [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

I will attempt to attached the PDF files and also the Microscope images.

The samples were drawn from a 2002 FLHRSEI with 20, 675 miles at time of service.  A virgin sample of the Syn3 was used as a baseline for the samples.

Engine Oil:  Shows a good analysis, very little particle content or contamination at this time

Primary Oil:  Shows signs of ferrous metals and contamination.  However this is somewhat normal for this sump.  Also see the photo of the

I'd like to  see the same report using Syn 3 in the primary and tranny.

JCZ, all 3 reports and analysis are done using the Syn3.  Engine is 1st one, Primary is the 2nd one and Trans is the 3rd one.  The with the microscope pictures 1st one is Primary and 2nd one is Transmission.  Again microscope pictures are of Syn3.

Does this answer the question or were you looking for something else? [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

Glave, thank you for posting this information!  [smiley=beerchug.gif] [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif] [smiley=thumbsup.gif] [smiley=bigok.gif] [smiley=1syellow1.gif] [smiley=7.gif] [smiley=laugh.gif] This confirms what the metal particles on the drain plug were telling me: Syn3 is not good in the tranny.  The other board where this was discussed heavily was Harley Tech Talk: http://groups.msn.com/HarleyTechTalk/tc88fathead.msnw

Thanks for doing this.  Please let us know what your dealers' response was.

I changed all three holes to syn3 about 1,000 miles ago and recently, in very hot weather (all day, high of 97 degrees), it seemed that the trans was shifting "sloppy", for lack of a more technical term.  After much reading on this and other boards and talking to two independent shops, I drained the trans and re-filled with Amsoil 75-80.  I didn't notice an inordinate amount of debris on the drain plug magnet, but it was only in there for 1000 miles.  Anyway, I've only been out on it once since then--can't really make a comparison until another long, hot day on the road.

I still have syn3 in the primary and engine.  I may go to Amsoil in them, too.

Thanks again, and let us now what a dealer says about this test.

My dealer was pleased that I took the time to get the data instead of just gripin about the news.  They have copies of all of the erports and we will do this again on the stock tranny lube after about another 2500 miles.  I also have another fellow who will be doing the HOG Posse ride this year (next week even) and we will be testing his lubes upon his return.

Dealer is open minded and if test show a persistent problem they have indicated that thier next call will be to the MOCO.

I'll keep all posted  [smiley=drink.gif]

Thank-You for sharing the data! I will only use the syn3 in the crankase. I never had bad luck with HD semi in the trans or Hd primary lube so I will stick to those.

Glave,

I found your analysis very imformative. I have never ever used Syn 3, in all 3 holes. Used for a bit in an 02 EG, for the last two years have used Mobil & Amsoil in the crankcase, Red Line HD Schockproo in the tranny and Red Line in the primary. Great fluids tranny shifts great no noises abd runs great in the heat.

Syn 3, I do not think has in friction modifiers in it, this is required for transmissions.

On HTT some of the Techs have advised riders not to use Syn 3 in the trannys.
