Yes, getting rid of the 255 cam will cool things down. From there you need to determine where you like your power.
Some people like the tractor cam feel of the 255's while others like their power much higher in the rpm range. Really comes down to personal preference. Everything between is available.
THEN, think about budget.
Cam swap, new cam bearings, new tuner, new push rods, new lifters and a good dyno tune will put you in the $1500-$2500 range
Adding compression requires pulling the heads off. So more money just in plain old labor.
Thinner head gasket, smaller add on. Shaving heads a little more. Doing a complete headwork job much more. Add a bigger throttle body, pistons, crank welding etc.. etc.. Could be in the $3000-$7000 range depending on how far you go. It can get a little mind boggling for sure.
I debated this for a long time before I decided on a mid range cam, new cam bearing, new pushrods, new lifters, tuner and a great tune. Works just great for what I was looking to do. Cooled it down and add a little legs to rpm.
You're in good hands here. There are TONS of threads to review and do your research!
