I was amazed when I picked up my gunship gray FLTRXSE that it is actually a pearl based paint. As usual Harley will not release the PPG paint code so upon my inspection for color matching paint I discovered it’s a much more complex color than meets the eye.
It’s pearl is actually very complex for such a basic color. So everyone who thinks this gray is just a basic paint applied to a CVO is sadly mistaken.
Great color and excellent job by Harley even though I can’t color match it right now.
I am working very hard to get it right but I am still off by a few shades.

If the code has not been released yet, it soon will be. But not from HD. Try a PPG jobber or a painter at a QUALITY collision repair facility that sprays PPG. I have never failed to get one if I tired hard enough.
You wouldn't go to Ford or Chevy to buy paint, Harley is no different.

Matching the color wasn't as easy as I thought it was going to be......
A touch dark here.

I am wanting to add lowers to my Gunship Gray Road Glide. Priced though Harley because they do not have a kit its just over 1800 dollars with my 20% discount on parts.
Found it a little less if I buy the primed kit, and then the CVO Street Glide lowers, that is 1780. If I can get the paint matched it would be much less, about 1200 counting the painting.
I hope somebody figures it out soon.

Yeah my local PPG guys can’t get the CVO colors. Harley won’t release it yet. They are making to much on the painted parts. I as well as everyone else thought this was a simple primer gray color however it is a very complex color to try to match.

Keep trying for the PPG formula. That should be released any time now. I remember when Typhoon maroon was withheld then at Christmas it popped up. So did the Electric orange back in 09. Always could try the spectrometer (spelling?) and let it create a mixable formula then tint to match if necessary from there. I will say though, if you are trying to buy paint vs painted parts, the cost of primer, sealer, base color, clearcoat all hardners, sandpaper, tape etc makes it a tough call. I paid over $80 for last pint of color I bought and this is just the start + you need a person to spray and a GOOD downdraft booth to prevent dust and some of the base colors now are water base, you still use regular clear, but you need a LOT of airflow to make the water base flow and cure between coats. Not a simple world. I know a couple shops here that spent $20K updating there booths for water base airflow. SO maybe a painted part is not so expensive in the long run if you can get it.

Any updates on a formula yet?
I have a couple spray our cards done in sikkens and there aren't close at all.
Going to try the camera next week.

Joe got it.. the first batch of parts are in the booth.

Your killing us here. Please provide details. :drummer:

Care to share the formula?
Ppg?

Can anyone share the formula, paint code? My lowers waiting for paint....

Not likely. Painters work hard to come up with a color match. I know there is at least a half dozen tries to get the color right on my parts, that's hours of work plus material.
Best bet is to locate a competent painter in your area or send your parts to someone who has matched the color already.
Aren't the gray lowers available painted already? The Street Glide is gray and comes stock with lowers. Seems like an easier route to go.

I already purchased lowers, kit for speakers, stretched side covers. All just primed. My mistake... I bought it with bike in September. That time was not sure that lowers fit the bike. So i ordered primed version, just in case i would have to cut them and modify them to fit 21 wheel. My paint guy says its realy difficult to match. I gave him stock side cover from the bike and he use paint scanner but he still can not match the color....
-
The scanner was close for me just not perfect. The pearl changes the look of the color depending on the angle you are looking from.
I have yet to see my parts. Once I can get them next to the OEM color I'll report back as to what I think of the match.

OK, thanks !

I have a guy trying to match for me. He has my side covers. If your guy gets a good match and mine does not, I may have to ship my stuff to him.

There is a listing on ebay that just went up, for Harley Gunship Gray paint with pictures of the color match.

That is a lot of pennies for very little paint.
For non mating parts mail order paint wouldn't be bad.
For parts going against other parts I'd be apprehensive.

OEM against Joe's color match.

What's so good about that picture is you can't tell which is which....sign of a good match and good painter.

I fully agree. Locally, three weeks tying to paint match and get it right.

I wonder if there are variances in color from bike to bike?

Not sure, I would hope not. I was parked next to a gunship gray street glide a couple months ago, they sure looked the same.

Yes. Joe told me he has 2 different shades so far for the gunship. So to make sure I sent him one of the side covers. I got a bunch of parts out to him right now as well as a wrap around front fender. Joes a great guy. He has been awesome to deal with.
Also what a great project to conceive and then execute.
You should be very proud. This is what makes America great.
