Title: Heavy Breather & HD Boom Speakers in Lowers
Post by: RivRaptor on March 30, 2018, 03:17:02 AM
Don't like being told that you can't do something.  Thought I'd share.  The way I see it there is 2 options (17' 114 CVO wet head) for the stock look (Boom Audio Speakers) in the lowers & adding a HD Heavy Breather....move the speaker in (deeper) the lower unit or shorten the air cleaner assembly.  Made a template to remove the raised speaker mount but found out dealing with the mounting system & clearance issues with the recovery tank seemed like a lot of work (do-able but a lot of work) so shorting the Heavy Breather looked easyer.  Shorting the air cleaner element and re-installing the end cap is the way I went....

Took the angle out as not to take any more than I needed

Cleaned it up with some shop scissors

Thought this next step would be easy....was wrong.  Thought they sealed the ends of the filter with  an RTV type substance...nope Epoxy.  At least an hour cutting, grinding & pulling with various tools.  There is an inner steel cap so at least digging out the epoxy & stainless wire didn't screw up the chrome end cap.

Ready for epoxy.  Cleaned the filter real good & let dry to make sure there is a good bond.

Good thing I didn't have the small tubes!  See the speaker template in back round.

Went 3 1/8" off back plate all the way around the cleaner element which gave me 1/8" clearance during mock up...lost 1/16 after epoxy.  Doesn't touch but would suggest 3" to make sure end result is a least 1/8".

Hoped this helped anyone who wants a similar setup.  I'll have it put on a dyno with and without the element soon  and see if there is any loss, but I really didn't take off that much.  There is room to take an 1/8" or so off the speaker cover without messin with the speaker depth, but I wanted to save that to increase the angle of the tweeter to point more towards the rider than the passenger.

Update.  Put about 500 miles on since installation / mod no issues and hasn't touched the grill.  Love the heavy breather!  The chrome is a nice addition to the motor & you can tell the motor is getting a lot more air over the stock ventilator.  Ready for a 124 kit now.  Just picked up fullsac's head pipe & mastertune.  (Thanks Steve!)  Will do a write up on lowers speaker harness & amp install & 124 kit @ same time.  Only want to take bike apart once.

After cutting down the filter, it appears you would have no more surface area than the Ventilator filter and possibly less.  Short of doing flow testing or back to back dyno runs, how do know the HB is flowing more air than the Ventilator?  Or is that an assumption on your part?

I agree in theory with your statement, yes there seems to be the same or even less filter area before I trimmed a little off.  But other factors are at work here. In the ventilator air cleaner air has to make a tight 90 degree turn with part of the cover obstructing flow, in the Heavy Breather it has a longer curved intake runner and due to the taper in the filter air has almost a direct shot through the filter.  Longer intake runners generally make more power.  After installation I noticed considerably more heat coming off the motor on a few short local rides (didn't sump) as well as more intake noise.  Threw a new tune on with a little more fuel, back to normal.  Butt dyno says it feels a little crisper on the throttle.  I did this install to see if I could get it to fit because I'm planning on doing a 124 build soon & all research I've seen points to needing a HB.  Besides it looks bitchn!

From what I am seeing on some of the professional builders web sites, with the 124 M8 the heavy breather in stock form you loose 3 hp and 3 torque over no filter.  They are using Non-HD filters.  I am hoping to see a test of the new HD extreme flow filter set up.

I also agree with you Dave.  I know this is not probably the best / most HP filter available.  Hell K&N's are basically rock catchers anyway.  I'm factoring in the look I want, also I'm planning a conservative 124 torque build so I'm not gonna sweat a couple hp's in the end.  As I have noted in earlier posts installing this cleaner on my bike with stock ventilator defiantly leaned out the bike (114), so this should move enought air to handle my 124 needs.  We will find out for sure after I have Steve @ Fullsac tune it when I'm done.  I'll bring the ventilor for fun too!
