Title: 2017 124" dyno test. 133 HP 142 Tq!

Just finished up a 124" M8 build. Made 133 HP and 142 TQ. Over 120 Ft pounds at 1750 RPM. That right there is enough Tq to pull Rosie O'Donnell out of a buffet line!

Do anything different to oil pump or passages due the "sumping" issues?
Spoke to local HD master tech said that most of the sumping issues were in the 2017's, not 2018's, dont know if BS or not??

I knew someone was going to ask. Here's the story. This bike started life as a 107. It came to me with Harley's Stage IV 114 kit. Low end power was beyond pathetic. I kept the SE heads and 64TB. Bumped it up to 120 pistons, swapped the lame 515 cam for a Tman 226. Made 127 / 137. Everybody was real happy. Ran flawlessly for 2000 miles, suddenly sumped and burnt down. The owner did not recognize the early signs and rode it into the grave. Pistons, Crank, everything important smoked. Ran piston debris through everything, oil filter and oil pan was filled with metal. Anyone not pulling and flushing the oil pan after one of these goes Chernobyl is making a big mistake. This go round got the 117 4.5" crank and 4.185 piston for 124". TTS 200 cam was the only other performance change. The oiling system did get a few mods. The piston oilers were leaking as usual. I re tapped the screws and resealed the covers to ensure oil was no longer bypassing. The oil pump is Harley's latest for what ever that is worth. I ported and enlarged the oil inlet in the bottom of the cases, drilled the first passage larger and ported the corners leading up into the pump. I also ran a vent line between the valve cover and the oil tank to balance pressures on both sides of the pump. Did I fix anything? Hell if I know? Bike is getting delivered back up to Washington this week where the owner will take over testing. I hid a Rabbits foot in the glove box.

Very nice.  Lots of torque and a great curve.  How much do those SE CNC Heads help?

Want to do the 124 pistons, TTS cam for my 18 CVO Road Glide.  Just to worried it will sump.

I'm with you there. I'm not touching the motor outside of a tune until there is a known solution for the sumping.

I was looking at a mild (non CNC head) 124" build.

If you look close in the video you can see the fitting straight above the rear exhaust pipe in the back of the valve cover. From there is goes in just below the dipstick. A simple way to balance the pressure between the tank and the motor.

I believe the piston oilers leaking are the main issue. The smaller motors seem to deal with it. The larger bore creates more vacuum and obviously upsets the scavenge pump when all the right conditions line up. Nobody really knows? The common denominators are big bore and leaking piston oilers. My 120 is still going strong. The only mod I did was sealing the oilers. And I have the oldest oil pump ever made in it. I would hold off on any big bore plans until more is learned and proven.

Thanks for the information Steve.  Glad your 120 is still running strong.  Hopefully this will be sorted out soon.  Very interesting about the piston oilers, you mentioned them a long time ago.

They need to be reminded that by the rev limit and other parametric limits written in to the ECM Harley itself defines the limits of "misuse" any rider can apply to the motorcycle.  Within those limits it's Harley's problem.

He did admit on stage 3 and 4's when driven extremely hard they have on occasion seen sumping and you can imagine my response to that. He also said they have seen no sumping on stock through stage 2 which you can also imagine my response to that as well. He inferred that this new change is what will be coming on the 19's and that they had done around 15 around the country already (maybe Heatwave is one?) for bikes with multiple sumps and not one had come back yet.
I suggested he might look into a career in politics!

So yours was/is first AND they'd done 15 already?  He's not a very good politician.  The good ones lie much better than that.

I built something almost identical for a buddy on mine, difference being, his trailer had aluminum L-track welded to the floor. (His trailer was all aluminum construction.)

Sadly, I am horrible about taking pictures of my projects, bikes, cars and family!

Steve, do you think a custom made dipstick cap with fitting on the top of it might work in the same manner? Could possibly be a revenue generator for you for the folks that don't want or have the ability to drill and tap the engine case.

Sorry for the thread resurrection, but since the new S&S pump and plate are out, I have chosen to void some warranties. I ordered my headpipe and TTS tuner from you today as well as my T-man zero loss AC. When I talked to TR he mentioned he was going with TTS tuners for all his M8 builds. That says a lot to me.

Just to be honest, I have no idea if balancing the atmosphere on both sides of the scavenge pump helped or not? I know of a couple of others who believe what I do and think this whole sumping problem is nothing more than a venting issue. How many new oil pumps has Harley come out with? Yet they still sump. I hope the S+S does the trick for you. I would still shove a Rabbits foot in there somewhere.
