Title: Gas mileage
Post by: Chief2505 on August 25, 2018, 09:33:43 AM
I have a 13 CVO Ultra with the fullsac set up and 2" cores.

I had trouble installing the tune and a couple years ago I was in West Virginia and between Steve and Schrader I was able to get a new tune installed. To be quite honest I have never noticed a difference in heat or gas mileage.

My question is though, recently on a long trip (4,000 miles) with some friends, an 18 SG special, 07 Road glide (stock) I found that my bike gets the worst gas mileage.

Over 75 mph on the slab at 180 miles my light was on and I consistently took a gallon more gas than the 07 RG and about a half gallon more than the 18 SG.

At lower speeds, running around in Yellowstone and Beartooth it was more like the 07 took .4 less than me and the 18 about .2 less than me.

Am I missing something? Or do the Road Glides just cut the wind that much better?

Yes. The CVO Ultra Limited is an aerodynamic brick with the Batwing fairing. I ride a 15 CVO Ultra Road Glide and consistently get about 20% better mileage at high speed then my friends who ride Ultra Limiteds. When I had a 2009 Screamin Eagle Road Glide without lower fairings, I did even better.

Traveling with another RG recently both loaded down about the same. My 110 vs his 103. He was consistently .4 gallons less than me at fuel stops.

Sent from my boring Droid phone.

Your bike is one of the heaviest, and that tour pack adds a lot of parasitic drag too. I have an '06 CVO Ultra, my cousin has a '16 Ultra low. On the Yellowstone/Cody GTG in 2017 we got about the same running at 75-85mph on the highways. We averaged between 39-42mpgs. Elevation helped a lot. The higher we got, the better the mpgs, averaging 43-48. Inside Yellowstone park at park speeds we got 50! Once I got back to sea level I was back to 32-34mpgs.

The worst I ever got on my old '01 was 26mpgs, and that was when 110mofo, PanHeadJimmy and I rode from LA to SFO up the 5 freeway into strong headwinds the whole way.

I get 36-37mpg with a 131 most of the time. Prolly because of the higher gearing on my 07. ;D

whether it is my S&S 124 or the M8 with the stage 3 and then 4 I always get between 32-38

My experience on my '18 FLTRXS has varied significantly. I think the two major factors that vary MPG results are weight and speed. As anyone who has met me knows, my weight is equivalent of most folks riding 2-up. As such, I expect my MPG to be lower than most riders.

My MPG has been between 32-40 mpg. If I'm riding at highway speeds and holding around 75-78 mph, I have gotten 38-40mpg reliably. When I start running over 80mpg up to 85mph my MPG drops to 32-35mpg.

For my 1500 mile Bun Burner Gold, I was running 8-10 over limit all the way. So in NM that's 83/85 mph and in Texas on I-10, posted limit of 80, I was running 88-90mph. Here's a listing of my MPG performance for the whole 1500 miles.

Miles   Gallons   MPG
163   4.853   33.58747167
179   5.707   31.36499036
193   7.388   26.12344342
114   4.545   25.08250825
146   5.503   26.5309831
146   5.413   26.97210419
161   5.781   27.84985297
146   5.500   26.54545455
146   4.708   31.01104503
159   5.183   30.67721397
43   1.461   29.43189596

My overall average for the BBG was 28.5mpg.

Please note: If I am running twisties or slow speed areas of 45-55mph posted I will get upwards of 42-44mpg.

YMMV - Haha.

on my 16 RGU if im running over 3k on the tac, mpg is 33 to 36, and if under 3k mpg is 39 to 43. that's 2up and loaded. bike is stock other than a fullsac DX 1.75 cores and steves map, FYI with steves map I can set the cruise at 100 mph and better
