Title: Heated grips not super hot
Post by: CJ CYCLE on October 15, 2018, 04:05:41 PM
When I turn on my heated grips (OEM Kahuna grips) it does not seem to matter if they are on setting 1 or setting 6, the heat is the same (not real hot, just warm).  I used the multimeter, and when I turn off the grips I have a little over 12V, which is normal.  When I turn on the grips, the voltage drops to 5V, and it doesn't change when I turn the adjustment back & forth.  Are the grips faulty, or maybe a short inside the bars?  Any ideas?

Is this why the description says "does not fit CVO?"

Something doesn’t sound right on yours.

Good Luck

Pop the cap on the Rh grip and make sure it is plugged in and fully engaged. I had a issue one time and Haird steered me to the connection and it worked for me.

On my 2015 Ultra Classic that is how they were.  If I turned the heated grips up to 6 I couldn't bear it with gloves on.

I was riding yesterday morning and it was 27 degrees.  Couldn't keep[ my fingers warm.  My fingers went numb even with gloves on.  No matter where I have the dial, they feel the same.

I've done that.  Thanks.

How do you pull that end cap off?  I've got issues with mine and I tried to pull that cap off on the right grip using a flat end screwdriver , it didn't seem to want to move. I didn't try any further didn't want to break anything.  I haven't found any info on removing the grip. Just thought  I'd ask seeing as the subjects been brought up.

How and where are you reading the voltage drop this seems odd.

How and where are you reading the voltage drop this seams odd seams odd.

Where the connectors connect from the LH & RH control modules under the speedo console.  The black & white wires and the connector from the grips.  The red & black are connected to P&A power under the console which is violet & black, which is relay P&A power.  The white is the PA power & black being ground.

Get the flat blade between the rubber and plastic cap and apply pressure directly back.  The cap will pop off.  It is a tight fit.

I never ever ride without gloves and even using winter insulated gloves I never have turned the knob above 2. Gloves are warm to the touch outside and hands are comfortable, warm but not sweaty.

I fixed my 2nd set of faulty HD heated grips by replacing with Heat Demons.

I called the dealer where I purchased them.  They said under 1 yr. warranty.  Need to test grips, so i have to take them to dealer to see if they get the same thing I did.

I think the reo-stat switch is bad.  They are stuck on low setting, thats the reason I can only get 5V out of them.  They are the "new" Kahuna line of grips, so may be some bad chinese switch!

The one issue I had with the Heat Demons was probably my fault...was working in the faring and I think I pulled the clutch side ( in hind-sight) Heat Demon wires .....a solder connection on the element 'came off' a while later....Heat Demons sent me a new element AND new connectors FOR FREE! (after 5 years!!!) . This concept of customer service is completely foreign to Harley!!!

Well.  The dealer would not honor the warranty.  Said since the heated grips get warm they are working!  Ha!  Yeah, the are warm, not hot when it gets below 60 degrees.

I purchased another set, installed them and same thing!!!!  Must be an issue with the CVO wiring.  It says right on all the heated grip packages that "will not work on CVO."  What the heck.  So when I check DC on one side of the circuit, the V drops to 6 V, and back to 12V when I turn off the heated grips.  On the other side of the circuit, the V drops to .4 V when I turn on the grips and back to 12V when I turn the grips off.

On my 2018 FAT BOB, it has OEM heated grips.  On the white wire side of the ciruit, the V stays at 12V when you turn on the grips and turn them off.  On the black side of the circuit, it drops to 6V like on my CVO.  The difference is the drop in V on the white side of the circuit.
Anyone have any idea what would be causing this.  Short in wiring on the TBW side?  That is the only thing I have not replaced, athough I have continuity from the connector to the end of the TBW cartridge on both sides of the circuit.

Might be seen as a dumb question but, Are you sure you're wiring them up correctly? Almost sounds like they're wired backwards.

Installed correctly.  Isn't the first pair I've installed.  In fact, installed a pair on a 2018 Fat Bob and they work great.  I spent 1/2 day at dealership yesterday.  They did finally take back the first pair, after testing them they weren't heating up.  They were out of the black Kahuna heated grips.  They tested the chrome Kahuna and they heated up a lot better than mine.  So, the Parts manager is going to order a set of the black ones, test them, and then if they heat up more than the new ones I installed, he said he would swap me out again.  So.  I have to say, I am pleased they are taking care of the problem.  Lone Wolf H-D in Spokane, WA.

Some good information here. Recently grips suddenly stopped making any heat have not got into checking them out and the dealer politely informed me the parts and labor warranty has ran out go figure.

My grips were added on factory H.D. heated grips on `15 CVO S.G. installed by dealer three years ago used less than three hours and never on high like others here said they get super hot past at mid setting normally run at 2-4.

My friend has heat Demon's on his `03 S.E.R.K. with over 100k miles on the bike and never had a minutes problem with them. Will go Heat Domon route should the H.D. grips be defective.

I've got the OEM on an '08 and a '10, lots of miles and use. Both work fine, go figure.

Mine have never worked very well on my 2016 cvo street glide. I have had  them looked at and was told they where in spec. They seem to heat up and the drop way off and not want to get real hot again.
