iPods have better performance than iPhones as far as quality (response curve, db, etc) but the frequency response is the same. I am not familiar with Walmart brand MP3 players. A quick search in Google seems to show that cheap MP3 players ($20 range) have freq response of 100-18k. So that might be a good test also.

Since all four speakers cut out it could very well be your iPod.

Also any possibility of a mismatch between the amp and the speakers as far as impedance? If the impedance is lower than what the amp is rated at driving high frequency audio at high volumes might cause the amp to shut off the sound temporarily because of overheating.
