Perforated Leathers
« on: January 29, 2007, 07:44:21 PM »

If you took for granted that they were equally well made and designed, how much more comfortable would a leather perforated jacket be than a vented leather jacket in 80’s and above temps?

Thanks

Gregg

I've got both and as far as I am concerned neither are comfortable at that temp.  I wear a mesh jacket in warm weather.  Leather is just too HOT.

The Vanson fully perf jackets are fantastic.  I  have worn one in temps up to 113.  Cant say it was pleasant but i was no worse for the wear than the guys that were in t-shirts.  Great protection and if you get a light color like lite grey, they are very good in the heat.  Just my honest opinion.

I have the HD Aeration leather jacket. I really like it up to the 80 degree range. Any hotter than that sitting at a stoplight or waiting on a train, it will cook you. But so will any other protection.

I almost bought the FoxCreek perf. jacket.

Instead I went back to Bates Leathers and had them make me a SuperVent in brown leather with extra zipper vents in the biceps. Bates could have made the jacket out of perf. leather but they talked me out of it. They said the proper way is to make the jacket (unfinished of course) then perf the leather, then line it and finish it. This ensures that all the seams are made with solid leather. Preforated leather has less leather in it, so it is weaker. Same principle with drilled rotors I guess. They showed me some preforated jackets and racing suits that had come apart at the seams in accidents.

The other thing they said about preforated leather is that there is no way to close it off. It flows all the time, even when you may not want it to. I was teaching an MSF class a month ago, and a rider had a preforated jacket. He said the same thing. He was cold just riding around the range at slow speed. So I opted for the large zipper vents to allow air to flow. I added extras in the biceps to keep my arms cool. I had them measure me sitting on my bike wearing my heated vest. It all fits so well. So now, when it gets cold, I can close off all the vents. When it gets damn cold, I wear my Widder vest underneath it. I chose chocolate brown instead of black to help with the heat. And my other Bates Jacket, the Highwayman is already black.

I have an HD perf leather jacket ( the zipper broke on the Maggie Valley trip)  it was good up to mid to high 80's if you were moving.  I switch to my Cortech Denim or Mesh when it gets warmer than that .

I have the H-D perforated jacket and wore it all summer, live in Memphis.  As long as you are moving it is just as cool as a t-shirt and much more protection.
