My wife went down.
« on: March 10, 2017, 10:12:26 AM »

My wife, Donna, went down yesterday.  She was out riding with a friend, they were south bound on I-75 just north of Chattanooga.  The 18 wheeler in front of her had the drive shaft drop out of truck.  My wife hit it as 70 mph.  Her friend says she tried to stay on bike but it was flopping side to side everywhere.  She came off the bike and slid and rolled down the interstate for 50 yards or so.  It was heavy traffic and luckily all the traffic could stop.

The Lord had to be watching out for her.  On her left side she has a broken clavicle, three broken ribs and a broken wrist.  On her right side she has a sprained ankle.  After 13 hours at the hospital I was able to bring her home at 3:00 am last night.  It sure could have been a lot worse.

She is doing well, and in good spirits.  She is worried about her bike.

Prayers for her pain to dissipate are greatly appreciated.

It must have been terrifying for her, Dave, and I am so sorry this has happened.  It digs up bad memories for me when my wife and I hit that deer, so I know how scared you were for her as well.  I'm very glad she will be all right.  Certainly, the Lord was protecting her in those moments, of that you can be sure.  My prayers are with you both.

I'm really sorry to hear this!

I assume it's the same for others....when I read the details of somebody going down it kind of makes me relive the serious accident that I had in my early years on this forum that resulted in 2 1/2 months in the hospital, ten surgeries, etc. etc.    As banged up as I'm sure she's feeling right now, I'm just glad that she was able to go home....at least she can get some sleep instead of being woke up every two hours to get vitals.

Prayers up for her buddy for a speedy and complete recovery!

Really hate to hear that Dave........sounds like she was very, very skilled. Going down anytime is bad, but on a crowded I-slab at 70mph and not be in hospital is more than luck. She probably never knew it some of her riding skills kicked in and helped. Hope she heals quickly.

Glad, so glad, to hear she will be okay. As we all know going down at those speeds could have been really really bad. Also sounds like she had some good protective gear on. Your family is in my prayers.

My wife could not understand why she could not ride it out.  Stated she hit drive shaft square just like she was taught.  Look at the two pictures of her front rim, and the one of her rear and she understood why she did not ride it out.

This is the rear wheel.   She is very sore today.  Spirits are still very good.  These pictures really helped ease her mind as she kept questioning her actions.  She is tell me she must have her bike fixed or a new one with custom paint by the time the DR releases her to ride.

Thank you everyone for the prayers and well wishes.

Dave so sorry to hear about this.. she certainly has all the prayers and all the best for a speedy recovery..so happy it wasn't worse.  Prayers for her bike as well..
all the best,
Patrick

Sorry to hear this but she is clearly in good spirits and that is great! I am sure she will have a speedy recovery!

I am amazed at the damage to the rims.  I imagine a semi truck drive shaft is much bigger than a car drive shaft. My wife and I hit a giant pot hole once when we were loaded down going to Panama for the rally and I thought for sure we damaged the rims but everything was perfect.

Bless her heart anyhow..Worrying bout the bike she's a true blue trooper. I wish her well and gotta say I never mess with semis, I pass em or stay clear away. They throw treads all the time, they litter the highway, and that's what I always worry about. Best wishes to you both ( or all 3 counting the bike.) Hate to hear about any biker going down, but especially a honey biker.

Kind regards:
Kevin

Wishing her a speedy recovery.

Looking at the pictures you posted, I don't think anyone could have done better than she did at 70mph. Yes, she hit the "obstacle" head on and rode over over it, but with instant tire deflation and busted rims there was not much she could do. Not too many folks can ride on both flat tires at 70mph while recovering from a bounce. I put quotes on the word obstacle because that drive shaft might as well have been a iron girder I beam, not that 2x4 lumber the MSF makes you ride over.

Prayers on the way.

Thank all of you for the well wishes for my wife.  She is extremely sore and will be for a while.  However she is still in good spirits, and has a good sense of humor about it.  I towed her bike to SMHD yesterday.  Well it started snowing.  She sent me a text  "careful it's snowing, don't scratch my bike"

She is already telling me to make sure her bike is fixed, or she has a new one before the DR releases her to ride.

As was stated about staying away from Semi's, we both do, we stay way back or pass them quick.  My wife was doing 70 mph as she was leading some less experienced riders.  The truck passed them, and right after it pulled back into the right lane is when the truck spit its drive shaft out.

You just never know.  I do know it was not her time......

Bike vs Semi driveshaft at 70mph
« Reply #43 on: March 12, 2017, 08:58:07 AM »

These are the pictures of the front rim and rear rim of my wife's 2017 after she hit a 18-Wheeler Driveshaft at 70 mph.  The truck had just passed her, move back into the right lane at a safe distance.  Then the truck's driveshaft failed and came out from under the truck.  Also my wife could do was hit is square.  In the ER she kept wondering why she could not ride it out.  Showed her this pictures the next day, she understands now.

No, she could not keep it up right.  She tried, but I doubt any one could have rode it out with two flats, and a rim completely broken.  She is recovering, Broken left shoulder, 3 broken left side ribs, broken left wrist and a sprained right ankle.

Tuesday the Adjuster will go over the bike.  It's at SMHD so Big Dave will insure nothing is missed.  Rear fender and tank are only painted parts that don't need replacing.  Bag Guards and engine guards need replacing, front forks are bent, handle bars broke, all foot pegs, mounts, floor boards need replaced.  Looks like bent frame tabs also.

bent frame tabs generally means a total loss. or so it seems in a large majority of the bikes. maybe, an m8 is in her future!?

Holy crap! Sorry to hear about the wife's mishap. I would think there's a connection between the front wheel damage and
her broken wrist. Amazing she didn't go over the bars. Those ribs are going to hurt long after the rest has healed.
If there's a bright side, minor injuries for that type of get off. Hope she heals up fast!

That was one heck of a jolt when she hit that drive shaft.  Too bad she sent down, hope she heals up ok, scary stuff. Prayers for her to get relief from her pain & quick healing.

Bike may be totaled, sounds like a lot of damage, would have that motor checked out carefully if not totaled. Good shop there doing the work.

I would imagine after dropping a drive shaft it didn't go too far afterwards....  I was thinking the same thing though, what about the truck/driver?  i'm not advocating for a witch hunt, burn him at the stake kind of thing, just curious what happened with him afterwards.

Dave, melinda & I are praying for Donna & you. praying for complete healing, ease of pain & comfort. praying praises to the Lord for his intervention in looking out for her & in the time of a crisis. in this, I'm just glad she was able to come away with little injury(as it could've been way worse). the bike is a monetary thing that can be replaced, loved ones can not.   as for the driver, I don't feel that it was his fault, as it appears to be mechanical. as a driver & defensive safety instructor for 37 yrs, I do know the companies liability would still be responsible for all bills & replacing the vehicle. prayers to see you two soon & in good spirits. heal fast Donna, & thank the Lord Jesus Christ every day.

Dave

Steve@fullsac.com

Thanks Steve.  I was told she went down on the interstate and how.  I was shocked when I first got to see her in the ER at how good she looked and how minor her injuries were for that type of get off.

Sorry to hear about this Dave.  Your wife must have been dressed appropriately to not suffer more injuries.  Leathered up with helmet I expect...  I hope her recovery goes well.  A pretty unavoidable accident...

You are correct, full gear, chaps, leather jacket, leather vest, full face helmet, boots above ankle.  She always says, " Only cover the parts you want to keep"

Makes me evaluate my choice of riding gear.  Not sure I am smart enough to change.

I continue to thank all of you for the prayers.  I'm 100% sure they are helping my wife, and I am grateful.

The Driver was not ticketed.  The driver was not at fault unless he was negligent in is pre-drive inspections, and in his required maintenance on the truck.  I hold no blame on the drive at this point, once maintenance records are seen that could change.  The driver was truly sorry from what my wife's friend said.

This is best advice of the day/month/year.

But like you, I have been (too) slow to change....I've made it to 3/4 helmet and Kevlar jacket and Kevlar-lined pants, but am not yet "all-the-time". My wife (passenger) is even more reluctant to adapt, even though she is more vulnerable due to a fused spine.

I wish your wife a complete and healthy recovery.

Wow, I just saw this and it brought  flashbacks of my going down last May. Prayers for Donna's speedy recovery. You never know when the other vehicle is going to have a problem. The Lord was with her as it could have been a lot worse. Donna you did all you could do and the rest was the Lord
stepping in. We will continue to pray for your recovery. Dave, take good care of her and fram those pictures .

She is progressing very well.  She is of course very sore.  She keeps talking lots about riding again.

I thank everyone for your support and prayers.  I know it is helping.  Figure several of those pictures will be framed and put up.

I was thinking the same thing. I guess lighter wheels does not necessarily mean stronger wheels. In the late 90's I was having my BMWRT serviced. I asked the technician why the police BMW RTs had steel rims with spokes. He said they were stronger and better at going over things like curbs, steps, off roads and other hazards. All supposedly tested by the German Engineers in Bavaria. Still, I imagine that 70plus mph over a steel driveshaft would damage just about anything this side of a tank tread.

If hers is a total, she is adamant that her new bike will be purple, even if I have to have it custom painted again.

That seems easy enough to do. Sounds like she needs to spend some recovery time at a computer surfing motorcycle paint job images and graphics to get ideas.

Sorry to hear & hope she has a speedy recovery! My wife had a accident about 6.5 years ago & took her 15 months to get back in the saddle!

She has a couple ideas of paint jobs if it is a total.  She knows at least half will be 2011 Psychedelic Purple.  It was used by Harley for 3 months.

She is determined to be riding by the end of April if the DR's will let her.  She wan't to be ready to ride on Bermuda the first week of June.  We have a cruise planned to there, with your motorcycles to be able to ride the island.

Dave,

Glad your wife is starting to feel better and eager to get back in the saddle!

As for Bermuda, riding your own Harley on a "Sandbar" 700 miles off the coast of the mainland is pretty cool. However, the island really is a "SandBar" and not much land to it.

Scooters are pretty cool over there and plentiful. Have a "DARKnSTORMY" over there for me!

Good stuff!

Dave wow I'm so sorry to hear this. Although she's banged up I'm glad to hear she's ok. Her guardian angel must fly close to her. Prayers for a speedy recovery. It really sucks to go down when it's not your fault.

Also adding - I've re-habbed a busted clavicle (they had to plate & screw mine back together and hopefully hers is not that bad) but anyway they gave me a machine to use and it was called Game Ready - basically it's a giant ice water pump that pulses. That thing was better than morphine. You used to be able to rent them and if you can get your hands on one I would very highly recommend it.

And also adding more prayers that she does not sneeze for the next few weeks.

I am sorry to hear the news about your wife's accident. It certainly could have been much worse and I wish her a speedy recovery and a good settlement on her bike.

Glad to hear that the safety gear that she was wearing did a good job of protecting her. It has made me think about what I wear at times while riding.

Sorry to read this. Hope your wife is resting more comfortably now. That was a terribly ordeal for her so glad she is still with you. You should take the trucking company to court for having a unsafe vehicle on the road which caused injury.

Thank you all again for the well wishes.  She is recovering pretty well. She has managed to go up and down stairs yesterday.  Each day she can do a little more and hurts a little less.

My insurance co has totaled the bike.  Glad I have replacement on it with 5K on top for accessories.  Still going to come up short.  Looking at going after trucking co insurance for the shortages.

YB,  My wife and I have ridden our Harley's on Puerto Rico, ST Thomas, ST Kitts, ST Martin, Barbados and Dominic.  Most are not bike, but its fun and something very different.  I sure will have a Dark n Stormy for you.

Dave, while your wife is still healing I get that such details are the least of your worries.  If you've got a moment though I'm curious why the claims weren't against the trucking company's insurer to begin with?  No fault state?

Twolinerider,

My insurance company is going after the trucking company insurance.  It's a Canadian company and truck.  So rather than us having to wait months or longer our insurance is paying and will seek reimbursement.  Our Insurance is also going after them for the additional monetary loss that is not covered on her bike and riding gear.

Looks like the Trucking company negligent on proper maintenance.  Driveshaft is a daily inspection and a service every so many miles.  Its pretty obvious from pictures that the bearings failed.  That type vibration is pretty easy to feel.

My wife does not want a hold up getting her replacement bike.  She talked with our dealer and painter yesterday about the replacement.  I'm amazed at how well she is getting around already after that accident.

Sorry to read this Dave, missed the initial flurry of posts but very pleased to see that Donna is recovering well and working on her next ride.

The pictures of the wheels tell a story don't they. Wow! +1 on the don't protect what you don't want to keep. There is enough technology in riding kit nowadays to be protected & pretty comfortable year round wherever you ride.

Miss Lenda & I are thinking of y'all, wishing donna a full and speedy recovery. Hope to see both of you round the traps at some point..

Cheers Tom

We are truly blessed.  She's is getting better each day, and is able to do more each day.  She is proof good training, good gear and the Lord can protect you.

Thank you to everyone for your thoughts and prayers.

Glad to hear she's doing better, Dave.  That is great news!

Dave, how's the wife coming along in the healing phase? also, how about the bike replacement? I know she's eager to get back in the saddle, but being healed 100% & physically & mentally ready is more important. she's a tough cookie. still praying & wishing all well. Take Care!   GOD BLESS !

She is doing well.  The Broken ribs and shoulder do not bother her much any more.  Sprained ankle is doing well, no brace any more.  Her broken left wrist is now in a soft splint.  Dr said in a week or so she will be able to start squeezing a ball to strengthen the wrist and muscles.

Tins from her new Road Glide special are at the painter now.  Figure about two weeks and her new bike will be all done.

She is getting anxious to ride.

Well she squeezed the clutch twice yesterday.  Said she is really going to have to work the muscles for her clutch hand.  But, that is helping motivate her.

GREAT news Dave. glad she's doing good recovering. glad we have a GOD that's in the business of healing things broken (bodies, spirits, relationships) will continue to pray for her & you, as you walk this out with her. so thankful for her riding skills or she might not have endured as well.gotta make you proud to know that you have a great partner in so many ways. hope to see you BOTH soon.

Just seeing this now. Glad she made it through the wreck and is home.

A driveshaft failure is lack of maintenance in most cases. Have your insurance, or attorney take a good look into this.
