Well un-like the CVO, it really is a limited number of bikes, about 350.  CVO is Over 1000 of each color.  Sure beats the CVO Street glide in pricing also, and a true custom paint job.

If you want one better call a dealer quickly..They are probably already gone....

Does look a LOT better without the traditional skirted fender.

I may have to find a way to mount a 19 inch wheel and trimmed down fender on "Nanner Puddin". Just kidding the '47 is fine as it rolled out of Springfield....

That is nice but with such low production, its pointless because the average Joe probably wont be able to buy one. I imagine they'll be snapped up by dealer owners, employees, etc.

Kinda like when Harley launched their CVO Line.  Custom Vehicle Operation.....HD has loosen up on the Custom part over the years.

Best thing Indian could do is keep production numbers low to keep the exclusivity and uniqueness.  Having had a couple of CVOs, I thought HD overplayed their hand when they increased CVO production numbers and started introducing a multitude of CVO models each year.  I preferred when HD only had two CVOs per year - a touring bike and either a Softail or Dyna.

Well, the general reply is the best looking Polaris they have ever seen. Well that is because it "kind" of looks like a Harley. More so than the other Polaris models ever have. Street Glide copy, and why would anyone say it is a actual custom paint job? No different than HD, So far I have not seen a robot that can tape and lay-out graphics but if they existed, Polaris would have one first.

"Street Glide copy".  Indian changes a front fender and that one change makes it a "Street Glide copy?"  In order to be a CVO Street Glide copy, it would have to have valve train failure, tires that could only be purchased at a HD shop, compensator problems, poor custom paint, etc.

Hand painted is why it a custom paint job.  Video even says no two will be exactly alike.  So it is different than Harley.

I like the new Front Fender!    Hated the old one.    They are getting closer, now all they have to do is redesign the "Bowling Ball Storage Case" Saddlebags and they might have a viable competitor...

I was at the HD Factory open house in September. All CVOs are custom painted and not by Harley. One shop, chosen by Willie G, has been doing all of the painting and then ships the completed painted parts to York. They contiue to be custom hand painted.

As well as this one.  I'm hoping they have the new John Daniels bike along with the limited and elite at the Knoxville Indian dealer demo this weekend.  If they do and I get a chance to run by, I'll shoot some pics.

Meanwhile, this is a nice looking ride...

Well, I have had 5 in this century, 4 of them CVO's and none had valve train problems, never a compensator problem and no paint problems (& I ran a body shop so I understand paint). Tire deal is no problem to me, I have and will continue to use Dunlop tires as they are part of Goodyear and Goodyear sponsors and supports almost every racing series in the world, I support them as a result.
So yes it looks like a Street Glide copy to me, but then Polaris has no choice but to make clones. They are chasing the market that HD has continued to develop without a multi decade gap for over a hundred years.

I just don't understand why some HD owners feel so threatened by Indian.  They slam the bikes without justification.  Poor Indian can't win - they produce a bike with a throwback front fender and HD owners dislike that.  They later produce a model with a different fender and now they're cloning the SG.  I'm sure the CEO of Polaris would agree on one point - they are chasing HD, trying to peel off part of HD's 50+% control of the domestic MC market.  So far Indian has been successful.

Competition will make HD a stronger brand.

I agree with much of what you say here but not that Indian has been successful so far. Indian dealers are starving across the country and with Polaris shutting Victory which many if not most are paired with their future is uncertain at best.
I have never been a fan of the looks of the Indian but will admit this Elite is very nice! I would have liked to have seen them put a larger motor in this special model but think they are probably "dipping their toe in the water" with this model and trying to grab some positive press which I think they will do. If they would have stuck a 121 inch motor in this baby then I think it really would have shook things up. I test drove their 111 motor and though the torque was very similar to the M8, it really fell on its face above 3500.

I sure wish I could say the same.  I have had 09, 12, 13, 15 and 17 CVO's.  The 09 had valve train failure and compensator failure, traded it with 46K on it for the 12.   The 12 had compensator failure, clutch failure, regulator failure.  The 13 has had no failures, but I built the motor at 1500 miles and put in better lifters and so on.  The 12 was traded with 45K miles on the 15 CVO Road glide Ultra.  It had compensator failure and catastrophic valve train failure at 44K miles.  Motor had to be replaced, and it was traded the day the new motor was done on the 17.

I sure wish I never had issues with my 110 bikes, but that has been far from the case.  So far, with 11K the 17 is doing real good.

I wouldn't say Indian dealers are starving around my region.  My local dealer opened just over a year ago and has grown exponentially.  I've gotten to know the Indian Gen. Mgr. and he told me that on a Saturday they can't keep up with customer traffic, sales, service, etc.  I'd estimate they've doubled the number of employees in a year.  I think with no domestic competition, HD got fat and lazy and had started taking their customers for granted.  Indian is just the wake up call HD needed to get off their laurels.  Hopefully the M8 will be trouble-free.  So good, so far.

This thread is like watching " Harley & The Davidson's" backwards  :huepfenlol2: :huepfenlol2: HD struggled in the early years to overcome Indian's dominance, and eventually prospered. Now it looks like it's Indian's turn to play the underdog  :nixweiss: :coolblue: :drink: :drink:  I can't wait for the next episode  :huepfenjump3:

Stopped by the Indian dealer today to see what all the fuss is about regarding the new Chieftain Elite.  Regardless of your bike preference, the new Chieftain is a real eye-catching bike.

New Indian Chieftain Elite vs Street Glide CVO

Even if I still definitely prefer the Street Glide CVO I must admit the new Indian Chieftain Elite is a really nice bike. And the price is not bad at all considering what's included in terms of special painting and accessories.
I've not seen one "live" but just on YouTube: what do You think?

Sorry, but I think Indian (Polaris) still has A LOT to learn about selling an "elite" bike. For 32 grand you get a painted up bike, better stereo, less of a front fender (when they are famous for the full fender with the Indian head) , same engine as every other Indian on the road and NO TRUNK.

I know some think the full front fender is fugly, but that is the true look of an Indian, like it or not. I personally think it's just a fugly painted-up bike with a better stereo. Those fairings (inside & out) look like an afterthought and not crazy about the bags either. For all the extra money they should at least throw a tune at the engine and include a better exhaust right out of the box at the very least. The fact that they are only producing 150 of these an even less of the J.D bikes doesn't impress me in the least ... both are still fugly in my book.

Producing 350, not 150.  Bike includes upgraded floorboards, passenger floorboards, different wheels, some different badging, etc.  Similar to a CVO.  It has no trunk because it isn't competing with those bikes (no trunk on a CVO SG either). If you've been following the motorcycle industry, you know a factory cannot offer a better tune.  We saw HD get their ass handed to them (wasn't it a 15 million $$$ settlement) for offering devices that circumvent the stock tune.  Same goes for exhaust.  SESG is about $38k.  Elite is $31,500.  That's a $6,500 difference.

Yeah, I know I goofed the #s, but still 350 means hardly anyone in the country will have the opportunity to have one. Screw the EPA and all the tree huggers too, there's bigger things polluting the planet than richer running motorcycles. The point I was trying to make is if you're spending that kind of coin, you better have all the bells and whistles ... including a trunk even if it is meant to compete with the street glides, that's just my way of thinking. I personally would never spend that kind of $ for a toy that doesn't come with all the luggage. No secret I'm not exactly the biggest HD fanboy either, but at least with a CVO you get a LITTLE extra oooomph between your legs granted you are paying dearly for it. When I bought this bike I only settled for it because I wanted rid of the Ducati so bad. My heart was set on a new Royal Star Venture back in '13, but they didn't want to trade the Duc for it and HD had no problem taking my $ so here I am. I'm still holding out hope that Yamaha is working on a better fuel injected version of the RSV with at least a cd player instead of cassette this time around. I like my bike, but also tired of all the HD headaches that go with it. I have really tried to like the Indians, but just can't swallow the looks and not so sure if they would ever grow on me.

I admit the price is more appealing than HD, but certainly not the looks in my book. That's great for those that like them since we all can't like the same thing. Laugh if you must, but that RSV really was/still is my dream bike and I wanted a new one, not used. However, I guess I won't hold my breath for Yamaha either since it's been 4 years now that they stopped producing what I wanted.

I am visiting my Mother in FL and there is an Indian dealer next to her condo complex and I walked over there on Saturday and was able to see the Elite in person.

It appears to be a well thought out bike with excellent paint and chrome and I personally like the open front fender. It would be nice if it had a larger motor than the standard bikes, but the 111" does do a pretty good job as I test rode two of them at Sturgis and it has a 103" twin cam HD covered.

The bike that I liked is the Chietain Limited @ around $25,000 with the hard bags, bat wing with a radio and it also has the open front fender.

I am going to give Indian a serious look when I make my next bike purchase.

I think some of us may like the front fender and paint only on the front of the fairing cause it looks more like our HD's. :nixweiss:

History lesson: 33 bikes in 41 years of riding; a bit of offroad, racing, trail, street riding, long trips, cross country, etc.  I just moved back onto a new 2016 CVO RG Ultra after a good 17 months on a really nice VIC XC Tour.  I have a love/hate relationship with HD after 8 of them but making the RG my long haul bike after this B.S. that Polaris pulled with Victory.  I will not buy anything else from that company, Indian or otherwise.  The Victory is a really nice motorcycle but not travelling to the other end of the country on a bike with no dealer network which Polaris is responsible for with their decision to bail so I will keep my nice VIC for local work which I believe is a much better than any of the Indians.  Everybody has their tastes and opinions but won't buy a product from a company that has a history of bailing on product lines; Polaris watercraft, Victory, easily Indian next. Good luck and happy riding to all that choose that path.

You do not have to look far to see the same with HD.

Good point about dealer support. Important while touring, plus HD dealers are great pit stops.

Nobody can come close to HD in that respect.

I agree 100% on the dealer network. Lots of other great bikes out there but none of them can come close to what HD offer as far as dealer coverage. Definitely a huge plus when going on a long road trip.

I agree and am glad that there are more HD dealers.

However, if you build a product that doesn't break down OR use suppliers that are reliable to the original specs, there isn't as great a need for more dealer/repair shops.

Other brands, BMW comes to mind, maybe Indian, might not require an extensive dealer network?

I know it is an old thread but .....

Stopped at an Indian dealer while I was in Indiana last week. Got to see that red bike in person. It looks good in the pictures but looks way better in person. Nice looking bike.

And I sat on a couple of the dressers. Surprisingly how light they are coming off the kickstand and balanced they feel.

As a number of you know I jumped ship, But Soozie didn't so there's still a 2017 RG in the garage. I got #20 the J.D. Chieftain, I've had maybe eight CVO'S and have to say this Indian has beat them all, I changed the bar's, put RineHart slip ons, and pulled the cat, unlike some of you I like the original fender with Indian head, thanks goodness we don't all like the same things. this bike is the smoothest bike I've ever rode, and balanced much better then the HD'S. I will agree it does make me a little nervous that there isn't as many dealer's around as HD has. I'm also on the Indian forum and rarely hearing of any problems with the 111's like I have and a lot of you with the 110's. Only time will tell.

Uh, they must not have had any BLUE bikes at that dealership!

There was one, the CVO version "Elite" I think it was. But it looked slower sitting between two red bikes.

Looking at the Roadmaster Elite I don't care for the front fender, but the sales guy was quick to add we can change that to the Chieftain, along with the 19" wheel.

The bluish white LED looks out of place on the Indian head.

I like the fact that Harley has competition tho I love my ride. To me, it's not what you ride, it's that you ride. I like what I have and as long as you like what you have. Lets Ride.
