What is it when it's not a 2000 anymore?
« on: June 25, 2017, 02:46:42 PM »

Was chatting with another of the brethren last night who'd seen the new brakes on the Road Glide.  He asked "how much is left from 2000?"  We laughed a little before I really started to think it over.  What do you call it when the only things remaining that are of original vintage are:

frame (not the swingarm, just the frame)
rear light harness (though no other harnesses are 2000)
all body work (though not the tank's guts)
rear tail light bar
battery tray
engine (runs Delphi throttle body and has gear drive installed)
transmission (case, has six speed guts)
legs (though not the internals)

I think that's it.......  :huepfenlol2:

I guess you could call it like a part number, 2000-A, 2000-B ETC. lol

It reminds me of that Johnny Cash song "One Piece at a Time."

You will need to change the lyrics though. Since it is a Harley you need to change it to "it cost me a pretty dime..."

The Johnny Cash song came to mind when we were talking about it.  Remember seeing a great pic years ago (maybe part of a song video) of multi year Caddy with Cash behind the wheel.

My Road King started that way on purpose.  When I built it I was cherry picking what I liked best and building what I wanted it.  Worked out great.  The old Road Glide just... well... evolved over time.

The old original swingarm bent.  So it got the newer parts that work better (and axle and associated bits).  Lights changed.  Wheels changed.  Marelli begat Delphi and the harnesses and the harnesses, instruments and other bits to do that.  The old tape player was swapped out for something Iron Cross beefed up.  The list goes on and on.  It's a great bike.  Most comfortable I've ever had to just ride all day on day after day.  But though it looks the same the old girl just ain't how she came out of the box.

I guess it's like old cars, if it's 100% original it's an antique (or survivor) If it's been modernized it is a Restmod that has original parts and some modern improvements. then if it's 100% new parts yet designed to look old it's a replica... :huepfenlol2:
