Heavy Breather & HD Boom Speakers in Lowers
« on: March 30, 2018, 03:17:02 AM »

Don't like being told that you can't do something.  Thought I'd share.  The way I see it there is 2 options (17' 114 CVO wet head) for the stock look (Boom Audio Speakers) in the lowers & adding a HD Heavy Breather....move the speaker in (deeper) the lower unit or shorten the air cleaner assembly.  Made a template to remove the raised speaker mount but found out dealing with the mounting system & clearance issues with the recovery tank seemed like a lot of work (do-able but a lot of work) so shorting the Heavy Breather looked easyer.  Shorting the air cleaner element and re-installing the end cap is the way I went....

Thought this next step would be easy....was wrong.  Thought they sealed the ends of the filter with  an RTV type substance...nope Epoxy.  At least an hour cutting, grinding & pulling with various tools.  There is an inner steel cap so at least digging out the epoxy & stainless wire didn't screw up the chrome end cap.

Ready for epoxy.  Cleaned the filter real good & let dry to make sure there is a good bond.

Good thing I didn't have the small tubes!  See the speaker template in back round.

Went 3 1/8" off back plate all the way around the cleaner element which gave me 1/8" clearance during mock up...lost 1/16 after epoxy.  Doesn't touch but would suggest 3" to make sure end result is a least 1/8".

Hoped this helped anyone who wants a similar setup.  I'll have it put on a dyno with and without the element soon  and see if there is any loss, but I really didn't take off that much.  There is room to take an 1/8" or so off the speaker cover without messin with the speaker depth, but I wanted to save that to increase the angle of the tweeter to point more towards the rider than the passenger.

Update.  Put about 500 miles on since installation / mod no issues and hasn't touched the grill.  Love the heavy breather!  The chrome is a nice addition to the motor & you can tell the motor is getting a lot more air over the stock ventilator.  Ready for a 124 kit now.  Just picked up fullsac's head pipe & mastertune.  (Thanks Steve!)  Will do a write up on lowers speaker harness & amp install & 124 kit @ same time.  Only want to take bike apart once.
