New tow vehicle
« on: April 15, 2018, 04:17:39 PM »

Picked up a new tow vehicle. 2018 High Country Duramax. I wasn't in the market for a truck however the opportunity came up and I took it. This is just another step toward purchasing our fifth wheel of choice.

It is more truck than we need for our tag along toy hauler. I still have to set the hitch up. I just pulled it from my 15 and went on my way. I'm guessing the receiver is a few inches low. My 15 setup was spot on as that camper didn't move at any speed I traveled.

Lol. I think the Ford is the best looking 1 ton out there right now. I ran a Ford Dually for ten years, a good old 7.3. The new ones are to tall for me. I'm getting older and jumping in and out of the beds is getting harder. I leveled my last truck and quickly realized how much taller I made it. So this one is going to sit as delivered or so I keep telling myself.

Nice truck and great interior.  I'm a BIG fan of the brown'ish interiors they're using in most of the vehicles today.  My wife doesn't care for it as much.

I do have an observation/question.

I'm two years from retiring and I plan on getting a "used" truck and need to be able to pull a fifth wheel toy hauler.

I've been to RV shows and the general consensus is that a 2500HD will haul/pull a dual axle without much issue.  And a 3500HD will take just about any triple axle made.  Is this a good assumption?  I know that when it's time to buy a toy hauler, it's going to be sized correctly to what I have for a truck, but just wondering about 2500HD versus 3500HD.

Again very nice new wheels!

It will all depend on the year of the truck(s). They keep making them lighter and upping the tow capacity. When you are ready research the truck of choice and its towing ability.

Very nice. Been looking at 2500 duramax trucks but the sticker shock is insane. Our 1/2 ton Silverado will be paid off next month and going to a new truck payment is kinda scary, even though we are looking at toy haulers.

The issue with 2500's is not what they can pull, but rather carrying capacity.  I would think its the same now was it was when I bought my last dually.  I did not need a 1 ton for the 12000 pound trailer weight.  I need it to carry my wife, my three children and our dogs.  Payload on the 3/4 tons were 2000 pounds when I looked.  I had 1200 pounds of hitch weight 320 for my wife and I.  300  pounds for 3 children.  Our Dane was 195 pounds and the lab was 70 pounds.  So 3/4 would not work, and also left no weight room to carry a cooler or firewood in the truck, or the generator.

Getting the 1 ton worked out well, it enabled my to take a Harley on our family vacations also.

The 1/2 ton I have now is rated to pull 11700 pounds.  Not sure how you could do it, as me and the wife and tung weight of a trailer that heavy would exceed the payload of the truck.

I have air ride on my DRW now, the truck is always level, no matter the load. But comparing to the new trucks, all three, they are getting a bit ridiculous in the height department.
And it is not just suspension height, the beds have taller sides now as well.

At the last Jersey camp we did (that you couldn't make) I parked my 2011 DRW truck next to my buddies 2017 450, His truck was 4" higher !
