Betty gets a Russell Day Long (RDL) custom seat.
« on: May 28, 2018, 09:39:50 PM »

I have been on the road for the past 2 weeks getting some pictures and some farkles/accessories for my 2018 RGS (Betty). My last farkle stop was at Russell Cycle Products in Shasta Lake, CA to get a custom Russell Day-Long seat made for Betty.  (http://www.day-long.com)

My trip home from Shasta Lake, CA was 1250 miles with the last day being 700 miles. This RDL is worth every penny I paid. I was riding an HD Hammock seat (supposedly their best) and this new seat just crushes on comfort over long distances. No binding, no sore spots, no hot spots, no numbness. I cannot recommend this more highly.

My route from Shasta Lake back home to Albuquerque, NM.

Note: As I had this seat made to fit, it was made to custom height, weight, and inseam measurements. This seat sits higher than any standard or custom Harley seat you will find. I also purchase an RDL backrest so that they could move me further back in the seat than the stock backrest mount allows. Since this is meant for "me" on long distance rides, it does not really accommodate a BSR well. If someone needs a ride they'll have to be rail skinny. However, I think if the backrest was removed and replaced by the BSR then it might still work out for an average sized BSR.

Nice comfortable looking seat! I hear they are very popular with the long distance crowd.
I have always called modifications to my vehicles as mods and it's strange to hear other people's words for a mod. It probably is a sign of my age but this is my first thought when I hear the term farkle (mainly on import bike sites).

I remember them. Farkle is used in just about all but Harley circles. Mods or accessories is more common in HD communication. Maybe it is a Euro/Asian bike thing.

Looks fantastic. Did you book a reservation in advance for them to do? Did they do it one day? Price is you don't mind?

Yeah, I booked my ride-in about 4 or 5 months in advance. I could have got in earlier but this was a date convenient to me.

They did it in 1 day. Started at 8am and got done around 4:30 or 5pm. They only take ride-ins on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday. If those days fall next to a Holiday, they won't book it. So if Monday is Memorial Day, then Tuesday is not available for ride-ins.

I got just about everything so it came out to right around $1400. That included;

1. Ride-in surcharge (you can just ship your seat and let them to it. That works well for 99% of the cases)
2. Heavy Duty Suspension for my drivers seat.
3. Regular suspension for the passenger.
4. Custom RDL Backrest.
5. Heated Driver seat option.
6. Different colored/patterned insert on seat and backrests. They have different materials available. All my seat is vinyl. You can get leather. You can get different colors and they have an insert material called Sunbrella. I got Sunbrella inserts on a different RDL seat that I own.

Ways to save.
1. Ship the seat to them.
2. Don't get the heated option or have them preserve factory heating if your seat has that on it.
3. Don't add different insert material.
4. On a Harley, go with the stock backrest (assuming you aren't really tall or big)

Once you go over 230lbs for rider and/or 150lbs for passenger, the heavy suspension option is required.

Here is their pricing information link. You'll figure out the decoder ring easy enough. There are TONS of options.

Congrats Simon.  Getting a saddle that makes you ass and legs and back and shoulders happy over a long day is a wonderful thing.   :2vrolijk_21:

I've tried Mustang, Corbin, Ultimate, and the Harley hammock. All good seats but can't come close to the comfort of my Russell Day Long. Have over 35,000 miles sitting on the Day Long and I swear by it. Just wish I had tried it first.

As if last week, the closest appointment is Oct. 4 and 5th......approx. 4 1/2 months away.  They only do one "ride in" custom seat a day, three days a week.
