Karen Davidson Please Read This
« on: March 11, 2007, 02:46:34 PM »

Hi Karen,
Hope you don't mind me calling you by your first name. I feel like we know each other since I've been sending your family about $15,000 a year for going on 30 years now. I'm writing today to see if I can get you do something about the poor quality zippers in your motorclothes. I love Harley-Davidson leathers, and own 6 of your jackets as well as a couple pairs of chaps and two sets of rain gear. So it's not like I'm some newbie expecting hand made quality or anything. The problem is I keep having to replace the zippers. Or should I say the pull mechanisms. I've never had a problem with the teeth, always that pesky little pull whatchamacalit that actually puts the zip in the zipper. Just broke the one on my Torque leather jacket and I had just gotten my chaps back after 8 weeks. I'm not even going to try to work with one of your dealers on the jacket. I don't have 8 weeks of patience on this issue. Hope you can understand why that might be. Anyway, there's this nice Vietnamese lady down the street that will fix me up in 4 days for $25. Can I send you the bill ?  Seems only fair considering what a loyal customer I am. Thank you for your time. I know you're probably busy looking for new and cheaper ways to manufacture your line of Harley-Davidson apparel.

You must have missed the "Properly Working Zipper" accessory in the P&A catalog. You know the deal. Buy their stuff, then make it work right from the P&A catalog. But now that you asked her nicely, I'm sure she'll bend over backwards to accomodate you. I think it's more likely though that you'll be the one continuing to bend over! ;) Hoist! 8)

I can tell from your letter that your are a loyal customer of our company which since founded has prided itself on quality American craftsmanship.  I can not therefore understand why you are finding a problem with our Chinese zippers and leathers.

We make every effort to make sure that these Chinese products are the premium quality you should expect in China.  We take only the best quality Chinese products, of course with the lowest bid.

I am sorry that I can not assist you with your nice Vietnamese lady down the street, but if you would like to use any of our dealers we will be happy to have our quality inspectors decide if your zipper failed or simply does not work do to unauthorized modification or application of a non-Harley lubricant to enhance the zipper's performance.

You may want however to get the new "premium quality" scripted ball cap from the dealer next time you are in, they are usually fail safe and we appreciate the free advertising.

Best regards,

B B,

I feel your pain as in the last 6 or so years the quality has really gone the wrong direction.
I swear everytime you buy something at the dealerships, you better try it on as the sizes very SO much.

Maybe Karen, will step up and solve all of our issues with a much better quality control process in the motorclothes department  :nixweiss:

Look at the size of the teeth on the H D leathers and then compare to a real zipper. Amazing that they get out of the store still together. I expect that they're fine for fashion leathers but that crap just don't get it if you really intend to wear one riding.

Go to Iron Braids (the same folks that make the really good levers) and get some Zipper pulls made in colors to match the jackets.  Don't just repair; improve  :2vrolijk_21: .

Hey Karen,  I get a call from the clothing manager at the local dealer saying this years SE jacket is in for me. They just automatically order them in my size because of the "Elmelda Marcos" syndrome.  I drive 35 miles try it on and sleeves are 3" short?  Spock couldnt answer as to why. Same size as last years.  AND that $450 beauty , the first time on and zipped up the pull and gizmo fly off the top !  The crappy teeth at the top were not crimped right and now no zip. Brand spankin... so they warrenty it in 2 weeks.  NOW the real reason for this letter is the zippers on these boots! They cant be used as they dont stay zipped, instead they split open in the middle and make it near impossible to get home without good ole duck tape.   So I just leave them zipped with the crazy glue still holding them toether. Then In Daytona  2 years ago while walking around  THIS happens. Wolverine nor HD  will do anything about it and even $20 at the shoe repair shop couldnt re glue them.  Boy those CRUISER WORKS  boots sure are comfortable!!!

I actually Just got off the Heritage and was walking away ,  it was the wierdest feeling and was just to funny with duck tape to finish the day.  It all boiled down to a 1 yr warrentee  that was over by a few months.  The new ones o bought for thier replacement had zipper problems also. China junk is the bottom line.  Really sad  imho.    Thing is   I think about it every time i lace up those zipperless ones now.

Karen...None of your leathers fit me!!  You must be using the Chinamen for fitting as well as assembly...how about making something that will fit AMERICANS who have eaten too many Big Macs, and had a few too many Negra Modelo's?  Then you REALLY need good zippers to hold in all that middle part on us.  And if you haven't noticed, many of the women here have those LARGE AMERICAN BREASTS, so the jackets don't fit them either!!

I think I'll stick with the Fox Creek Leathers, and buy your patches to have sewn on by B B's Vietnamese friend!!

LMAO!!!
These are the same thoughts I have when only one side of the zipper pulls up on my$550.00 HD leather jacket and it catches my finger in the process. This is an EZ fix though as I don't buy anything from the MOCO anymore. Love & kisses to you Karen! 8)

Why pay $450 for a Harley Leather Jacket? I found one at a truck stop/car wash/video store for $29.95. The first thing I noticed is the zipper was assbackwards. (pull on the left side) Hmm, for $29.95 I might could learn to deal with that. Yes, it was for sure a men's jacket. After zipping it up and trying it on, I decided I'd buy it. Now, to get out of it. I tried to unzip it, but found it impossible. It zips and unzips at the same time. No matter what I did, it would not unzip. I badly wanted to bust my way out of that jacket. But, I stood in line, and explained the situation to the clerk, "Your jacket won't turn me aloose."

No, I didn't buy it. It could have just been one faulty jacket out of 20, but, I was afraid to try on another one.

Euro men's zippers are bassackwards from ours.

I doubt even the Chinese make a jacket that works like a straight jacket on purpose :apple: :orange: :mango: :cucumber:

Ms Karen Davidson,

I, like my brothers here have stated, have also spent many thousands of dollars for the privilege to wear the HD emblems with pride on riding apparel.  Unfortunately, not all my riding apparel comes from HD.  Very few of the HD shops carry clothes in my size.  Seems that the clothing line for women is made for the cute fender ornament type, size 2 and 4.   Suggestive cuts and very bright colors.  Lovely to look at, but my full figured body does not look good in the styles, even if I could pour myself into them, they are not cut for ridability, they are not the colors or durability for cross country travel.  How about a boot meant for a woman, waterproof, breathable, easy on-off, non-slip sole, styled feminine, but not a high heel? I have found better success buying clothing at the Honda and BMW shops and independents - cruiserworks etc.

About two years ago my FXRG jacket (while still under "warranty") ended up with a broken zipper pull.  It seems to be unfixable.  The dealer I bought it from is not worth the time to chase down.  It seems to me that the dealer closest to where I live should have been able to fix the problem.  -No dice.  Like most of the other problems I've had with Harley, I just decided to buy another jacket and forget about it.  It's not worth the turmoil it takes to fix it.
One day I (about 2 yrs. ago) I just pulled the zipper on my sleeve, and the whole tab broke off.  At least it's not as bad as the engine that I blew after spending about $5K hopping up (while still under "warranty") -not be covered- because of aftermarket parts.

Bought 2 pair of chaps and 2 leather jackets 6 years ago from Wilson Leather.

Chaps-$29.95 ea
Jackets-$59.95 ea

The only problem with any of them was Kathy's chaps had to have the last 3 inches of the zipper re sewned while in Daytona.  Cost $5.00

Can't see paying $500 for junk and for free advertising for the MOCO

The latest H-D leather catalogue.

Well,While we were in WI at the 2003 Anniversary Gathering I broke my zipper on my new boots I had bought for the trip. I got the biggest blister I have ever had while walking with the broken zipper. We had to go look for some flip flops so I could take the boot off I was in tears. We road to  a dealer  ( Doc's Harley-Davidson of Shawano ) I think. They were great they took the lousy boots and I got a lace up and I will never buy HD zipper Boots again.

Helen,
glad to hear that Doc's took care of you, I think he's one of the better dealers around, their about 5 miles from my place and where I bought my bike. that was a pretty good ride from milwaukee about 120 miles each way.

Dear Karen, I am writing to you to tell you it is over between us, and in fact has been over since I fell in love with one of your Factory Reps here in calif., Vern and I have only had 2 affairs to date, but both times, I was left with a sore bottom like never before, I will really miss our love that we shared, My $600 jacket that the zipper pull broke off, and my boots that the zippers split first month I owned them. Of course, according to Bob Drons HD apparell dept. , this was my fault. I will however, always think about you in that sexy official moco harley nightie everytime I drive by a dealership anywhere in my travels. It feels so good to not have to feel like I should stop and buy anything like I always did in the past, funny how love can turn sour so fast. Forever heartbroken....Mike L.

I was reading Mike's note to Karen about his unfortunate break up with Vern and his loss of the zipper pull and for some reason it reminded me of my zipper pull that went south on my favorite HD leather.

Why I haven't recalled it I can only imagine is because the .005 cent paperclip that I have had on it for five years or so is working so well it simply slipped my mind.

Then I started to recall all of the other clothing I have had in my 58 years on this planet leather and otherwise that I have lost zipper pulls off of.................. ZERO, ZIP, NADA is the number that comes to mind.  Sure there may have been one or two along the way.  Most likely on some cheap piece of crap jacket or pair of old pants, but those don't even register I suppose.  But when you have left the kind of money one does for HD apparel I suppose you come to expect the quality of at least a $20.00 pair of jeans from Wally World.

Oh well, false expectations set by the quality of my custom paint job on the SEUC I suppose. :nixweiss:

I will hold Karen's hand ;D Never a problem here with zippers on our leather jackets? My family of five has probably two to three jackets a piece and never heard anyone complain. Knock on wood ??? Chaps on the other hand I always buy from fox creek. Bottom line is you don't like the MoCo work or do not want to advertise for them buy something else?

No that's not the bottom line and is a cheap answer in my opinion. H-D leathers are the only ones I've ever found to be comfortable. My Screamin Eagle leather is good until the temp gets to 80 if I open the vents. I like the product with the exception of the zippers. So I end up having a better quality zipper installed and that's that. I don't agree with your attitude to cut and run from doing business with someone because of a problem. If you practice that you will eventually have no source for anything you need. There isn't a business out there that is perfect. So I bitch on occasion. It's human nature. Good for you if you've had totally positive experiences with H-D leathers. I started the thread as way of deflecting my complaint through the use of a bit of humor. I guess you missed that.

H-D leathers are the only ones I've ever found to be comfortable.

B B

B B...next time you need anything leather, and you don't have a need for it to have HD written on it (you can have a nice patch sewn on), give Fox Creek a shot.  They will custom build you a jacket or chaps...the leather is very thick, but it's like butta'  And their zippers are solid brass YKK's.  It's really good chit, and reasonable.  I can't get the HD leather jackets to fit me right.  The cloth/mesh/rain stuff does, but not the leathers.  Guess they don't build 'em for dwarves, huh?

I Suggest anytime you need a Zipper fixed- Just go to your local Dry Cleaner that displays a sign that they clean leather, They can replace the whole zipper for much less than the hassel of jacket exchange or purchase price for a new one

Heck, The person may have sewed the first one in before they got here anyway.

A sarcastic bunch for sure. Would be funny as chit if it weren't so true.

I'd have to agree with you.

Keep buying that foreign mad crap & they'll keep selling it.Pisses me off that Harley pushes the American made when they sell you a bike then import all their leathers .It's getting harder to buy American made in anything.I'll stick with Schott Bros.Jackets & redwing boots.Just my $.02.
I will admit I've never had trouble with the zippers in my Harley sweatshirts.

RedWing is selling Chinese boots too.  Better check the label next time you get some.

I found a NOS, Made In The USA, HD leather jacket today, to bad it was a tall.  Way too long for me.   :(

The brake rotors on my '07 Jester had a "made in China" sticker on them!

My Screamin Eagle jacket (I've wore it maybe ten times) zipper sure belongs in this thread.  Was zpping it up this past Sat. and the zipper pulled right off the jacket.  The zipper teeth seem to be plastic so I was able to put it right back on but it sure doesn't allow for a comfortable feeling about the product.........especially considering what it cost. :nixweiss:  I'm learning fast that the Harley clothes quality is marginal at best.

Zipper's only going to get worse. Get down to a good leather shop and get a real one put in. Sucks but that's what we're talkin about.

I am glade I am not the only one who has had problems with size and zippers. I now take my brand new jacket and bring it to the tailor and for $50 bucks get a completely new zipper, that actually works. Whats with the length of the HD jackets, even in long there short!!!!
