Dash mount Zumo Road Glide
« on: April 10, 2009, 01:09:52 AM »

The Road Tech Zumo doesn't come with a dash kit for the Road Glide, so I made something.

I opened up the upper right gauge pod for the GPS mount by moving the Volts gauge down & the Oil Pressure to the left side (replacing the outside temp).  The adaptation was pretty easy once I figured out how to do it.  Just had a few large thin washers machined to spec & sandwiched the dash lip (at the gauge pod) in between.  Solid as a rock - check it out:

Volt meter looks to be significantly obstructed.  How much can you see from the saddle?

I don't know yet, but I'll check it out.  If it were the fuel or oil gauge I'd care more.

I'll take a pic from my eye while sitting on the seat.

I have a rubber grommet for the wiring that requires a 2nd hole.  I guess I could drill a 2nd hole in the washers, offset to mount the Zumo higher, and then use the center hole for the wiring.  That might work.  Just dialing this thing in - thanks for the thought.

Much better than I thought.  No cheating -- this pic was taken direct from my line of sight, sitting in the saddle.  I'm 6'2, so I sit more to the high side & still no problem.

When it's all done, windshield back in place, everything adjusted just right etc., I'll take another pic.  So far so good!!  :2vrolijk_21:

I LIKE IT!!!

Now I'm just wondering which gauge I can afford to lose on my CUSE.....
Maybe the oil temp cause it is always reading WAY too high anyways....

Very nicely done man!

Don't mean to step on any toes (if you're selling the tank door mount), but Harley sells a batwing dash mount for $40.  I wanted a dash mount for my RG so I wouldn't need to look down while navigating (to say nothing of the wiring hassle with tank door mount).

HD sold a faiing mount for the garmin/hd quest unit. it only worked for the quest and quest II if you bought a zumo after that you had a mount drilled into your inner faring that you could no longer use.

if you do a fairing mount for the zumo now what will happen when the zumo form factor is obsolete?

I see.  Well, in this case you just need to commit to the current Zumo.  The quest was a dud that's for sure.  I view the Zumo more like an iPod where future models will interface with older mounts.  Granted, the early iPods don't work with the new power cords, but the new ones have a decent useful lifespan -- and I think it'll be the same here.  Could be wrong though.

I used a Garmin 330 Street Pilot for many years until it was obliterated when I totaled my '05 RG, otherwise I'd still be using it.  The map interface for this new Zumo is essentially the same as my old Street Pilot.

PS -- mine can be returned to stock, and you could use this same gauge pod mount with a batwing or RG.  Just give up the outside air temp gauge (like we really need that!).

I agree with your logic and applaud the installation.  The only concern I'd have being shorter than you is having to reach to the road glide fairing to manipulate the Zumo.  It's a stretch to the radio as it is.  No sweat on a bat wing.

Agreed.  Even at 6'2 with long arms the RG radio is too far away.

Last year the 550 was the latest greatest (and most expensive).  Then comes the 770 and the 880 and the 990.  As long as you don't want or need the new one, everything's cool.  I like to enjoy the things I have right now.

I understand, I am still using a Streetpilot 2610.  ;D
I was just conveying my amusement because Garmin has changed the form factor of the Zumo to once again make obsolescent the previous motorcycle GPS units.

I think it looks great. I have a few questions. I have a new 09 SERG and would like a nav system. From your pictures it looks like you have it plugged in the the aux on the radio. Is that correct? Why there and does it provide power to the unit. Guys don't laugh all I do is turn them on. I like the looks of the 550, should I buy from Harley or on line? Thanks

Biglew,

The plug in to the Radio aux is for the sound through your stereo, as in MP3's loaded on the zumo.  Garmin's allow for operation on battery or via 12v DC.  If you get the auxillary power (cigar lighter) from harley (about $19.00) it comes with a plug that plugs into the "accessory port" located directly in front of your battery; you can then attach the cigar lighter and of course your 12v adapter.  Whatever you plug into will be controlled with your accessory switch located next to your cruise switch.

I use a Gramin 765T and the 12v adapter is also the antena for live traffic updates (comes with the 765t for life for free).  The 765T is not waterproof however i rarely ride in the rain and when I do I can put it away or cover with a ziplock bag.

Buying.... unless you have "harley bucks" to spend shop it around on the internet, just make sure you buy from a Garmin authorized dealer just in case you need the warranty.

I would recommend that you shop GPS units and find the one that you will live with as there are many features, whistles, and bells - don't buy something you'll never use.  I personally prefer the Garmin units (although not the Zumo).  I attached the comparison from Garmin's site on the 765t and the zumo 660.

I hope this helps.

Dark thanks for the info. Why not the Zumo, is it more than you need or would use? Could I use the cigarette lighter on the sharknose fairing for the power? It doesn't leave much room between it and the tank.

when i got the 765t they did not have the 660 (or i was not aware), just the 550 and I wanted it smaller.  Before the 765t I had a Lowrance which was great but bulky.  The 660 is $350 more than the 765t and it has a few less features - alot to pay for waterproofing which is not a big deal to me.

you could use the regular cigar lighter but like you say there is not much room and I like things tucked away and out of site.  :)

Thanks.  I brought a traced template to a machine shop, made to fit the opening (outside) & another about 1/4" larger than the outer flange for the inside.  Sorry, I don't have measurements.  Also, I believe the stock is 1/8" aluminum.

I've since drilled a 2nd offset hole to move the Zumo up and to the left.  With the offset mounting hole you can rotate the Zumo & position it where you like (vs stuck in the center).

The Machinest is "Bogden" (he's from the Ukraine, and VERY precise with his work).  He will remember me & make 2 new washers and mail them to you I'm sure.   805-685-9640

BTW, I just returned from 4,000+ mile round trip to Sturgis & back.  The GPS mount worked flawlessly.  Easy reach, perfect visibility, no shaking or rattling.

I wonder if a 660 could be made to work like this?

I think so.  The cradle (550 or 650) receives a universal ball.  You need a ball that terminates with a threaded post, which goes through the fabricated washers for a Road Glide.  I believe the dash mount kit has that ball in it.  I ordered both the handlebar mount kit & the (Electra Glide) dash mount kit, and played with parts until I figured out the cleanest way to do this.  Not sure which kit had the ball with a stud, but from what I could tell on the HD website the 660 fairing mount attaches just like the 550 fairing mount.

EDIT:  I might have used parts from both kits.  Sorry, I really don't remember.  I ordered both (couldn't find any in stock), and was going to return the one I didn't take parts from, but then everything got mixed up together.

No ball mount on the 660 fairing mount. It clips into a bracket, and locks. The ball mount that came with the unit is for an automotive mount!

Sounds right, I'll take your word for it.  So that came with the unit then.  BUT>.. there's still something else you need from one of the kits, I don't remember what.  Maybe the cables?  Like I said, the mounting parts got all mixed up & I was pulling from a big pile.  Maybe I didn't even use parts from the other mounts.  Could be, I was still recovering from my collision at the time, with help from Percoset (and others).

PR3VS56, I finally got around to mounting my Nuvi.  What a great idea you had!  I got rid of my temperature gauge and moved my fuel gauge down.  This rocks!

BigLew,

I mounted exactly the way PR3VS56 mounted his Zumo with the exception that I used an ultratilt from http://www.leadermotorcycle.com/PROD/TILT.html.  I had a local machinist make me two aluminum disc, 1 was 2 1/4 (replaced gauge on front) and the other was 2 1/2 (mounted in the back of the gauge hole.  Because I used the ultratilt i secured the tilt as well as the two disc with 4 8/32 x 1 1/4 allenhead bolts.  Since the Nuvi uses a large flat connector I had to notch the both disc and the tilt; approximately 3/16 wide x 1" long.

I can reach the Nuvi although I have to sit up to do it; normally I plug in my coordinates before I'm moving but sometimes you have to search while on the ride for things like gas as well as skipping through music choices.

I only took pictures from the riding position but could take additional if you want.

Thanks, Darkside....
