HD sold a faiing mount for the garmin/hd quest unit. it only worked for the quest and quest II if you bought a zumo after that you had a mount drilled into your inner faring that you could no longer use.

if you do a fairing mount for the zumo now what will happen when the zumo form factor is obsolete?

I see.  Well, in this case you just need to commit to the current Zumo.  The quest was a dud that's for sure.  I view the Zumo more like an iPod where future models will interface with older mounts.  Granted, the early iPods don't work with the new power cords, but the new ones have a decent useful lifespan -- and I think it'll be the same here.  Could be wrong though.

I used a Garmin 330 Street Pilot for many years until it was obliterated when I totaled my '05 RG, otherwise I'd still be using it.  The map interface for this new Zumo is essentially the same as my old Street Pilot.

PS -- mine can be returned to stock, and you could use this same gauge pod mount with a batwing or RG.  Just give up the outside air temp gauge (like we really need that!).

I agree with your logic and applaud the installation.  The only concern I'd have being shorter than you is having to reach to the road glide fairing to manipulate the Zumo.  It's a stretch to the radio as it is.  No sweat on a bat wing.

Agreed.  Even at 6'2 with long arms the RG radio is too far away.

Last year the 550 was the latest greatest (and most expensive).  Then comes the 770 and the 880 and the 990.  As long as you don't want or need the new one, everything's cool.  I like to enjoy the things I have right now.

I understand, I am still using a Streetpilot 2610. 
I was just conveying my amusement because Garmin has changed the form factor of the Zumo to once again make obsolescent the previous motorcycle GPS units.

I think it looks great. I have a few questions. I have a new 09 SERG and would like a nav system. From your pictures it looks like you have it plugged in the the aux on the radio. Is that correct? Why there and does it provide power to the unit. Guys don't laugh all I do is turn them on. I like the looks of the 550, should I buy from Harley or on line? Thanks

The plug in to the Radio aux is for the sound through your stereo, as in MP3's loaded on the zumo.  Garmin's allow for operation on battery or via 12v DC.  If you get the auxillary power (cigar lighter) from harley (about $19.00) it comes with a plug that plugs into the "accessory port" located directly in front of your battery; you can then attach the cigar lighter and of course your 12v adapter.  Whatever you plug into will be controlled with your accessory switch located next to your cruise switch.

I use a Gramin 765T and the 12v adapter is also the antena for live traffic updates (comes with the 765t for life for free).  The 765T is not waterproof however i rarely ride in the rain and when I do I can put it away or cover with a ziplock bag.

Buying.... unless you have "harley bucks" to spend shop it around on the internet, just make sure you buy from a Garmin authorized dealer just in case you need the warranty.

I would recommend that you shop GPS units and find the one that you will live with as there are many features, whistles, and bells - don't buy something you'll never use.  I personally prefer the Garmin units (although not the Zumo).  I attached the comparison from Garmin's site on the 765t and the zumo 660.

Dark thanks for the info. Why not the Zumo, is it more than you need or would use? Could I use the cigarette lighter on the sharknose fairing for the power? It doesn't leave much room between it and the tank.

when i got the 765t they did not have the 660 (or i was not aware), just the 550 and I wanted it smaller.  Before the 765t I had a Lowrance which was great but bulky.  The 660 is $350 more than the 765t and it has a few less features - alot to pay for waterproofing which is not a big deal to me. 

you could use the regular cigar lighter but like you say there is not much room and I like things tucked away and out of site.
