TuneTrapper, GPS Power Adapter + Interference
« on: June 22, 2009, 08:10:41 PM »

I just installed the TuneTrapper inside the Street Glide fairing.  After buttoning it uo, I noticed a bit of fuzz on my favorite station.  As soon as I plug the Garmin adapter into the cigar lighter, interference is horrible.

I should have tried it while the fairung was off, but didn't.  Is it because of the TuneTrapper or the 12V adapter? Would the factory antenna not been prone to interference from the Garmin adapter?

Thanks.  I'm new at having a fairing, a radio and a GPS on a bike.

Radio receivers today have very high sensitivity, adding an amplified antenna may overload the RF stage of the Radio.   :o

You may have created a ground loop. I can't help you any further as I don't have the bike here to hook up some equipment and see what is going on.

You might want to google it and see if you can find something on it.

Just my two cents.

The Tune Trapper is not internally amplified, no power or ground connections.

thanks

OK.

My mistake I thought the Tune Trapper was a powered AM/FM antenna. :nixweiss:

No problem.  The Biketronics (very similar looking) is powered as the Dakota Digital.

That was what I was thinking it was.

When you mentioned groundloops, I thought for a moment.  The HogTunes connects a wire to a ignition hot source to tell the amp to go on.  They have you piggy back to the +12VDC at the cigarette lighter.  There couls be an issue with the Garmin adapter being pulgged into the same source.  I'll try troubleshooting this weekend.  Without tune trapper and also adapter sourced at the battery.
