fullsac x-pipe install
« on: April 30, 2010, 10:34:52 PM »

When taking a ride after installing fullsax x pipe and baffles there was a strong smell similar to plastic melting/burning.  We completely check the pipes and nothing it touching them. Has anyone else experienced this?

Look at the wiring that runs parallel to the header that is attached to the frame.  Is it melting?  If your on a CVO look at the hydraulic clutch line and look for scorching.  Just look at all the rubber/plastic that is close to the x-pipe.

Well, after looking through all that and making sure nothing is touching the pipe, just a wild guess but could it be the ceramic coating on the X pipe curing
while heat is applied via riding?

it's probably the ceramic. My X-Pipe did a burn-in period...

I don't recall it smelling like either, but less like electric. It was dead of winter when I did mine, so probably several hundred miles... it was a different smell than when the bike was new and was strong for a while gradually growing weaker until it was gone.

I agree with Rick....the pipe is too close to the wire harnes and it is melting the plastic......seen it on two out of two bikes so far.

Its completely normal for the oil inside the new parts to burn off and the ceramic to cure. It will have a slight burning smell for about 30 minites. The stock 02 harness has plenty of room when returned to its stock location. There is no wiring clearance problems with the stock pipe or mine.

I know mine stunk pretty good for about an hour.  Didn't notice it at all after that.

I noticed the burning smell for a few minutes when the new pipe was fired up for the first time.  I just assumed it was burning off some residue from fabrication/coating.
