There are also some filter/cover combinations that don't allow the two to make contact.  So the bolt is pulling the center of the filter and the cover toward each other.  That stress point is a killer for the filter housings.
I agree, I went to a Power Pacc using a A/C insert as an end cover for open element. There was over an 1/8" gap between the back of the cover to the front of the filter then tight, tightening this down to pull the to together or close is putting a strain on the metal in that area. I took modeling clay and stuck it to the end of the air filter, the put a little WD-40 on the back of the filter cover bolted the two together until I was feeling some resistance, removed the cover measured the thickness of the clay and made a spacer to take up the gap, you could also use a few washers.

Here is what the dealer glued on the back of my cover, might not look pretty but the cover does not vibrate on the SE air filter so no problems tearing out the middle mounting bolt.

[56FLE, I was just wondering if you know how thick those pieces of rubber are? Thanks. CAHDBIKER

Only a guess because the cover is back on and I'm in Jackson Hole WY on my way to Yellowstone. The big round on is a rubber grommet like you would find in a frame hole where wires would slip through, it is about 1/2 in thick, the others would be about 1/4 to 3/8 thick is my guess.

Thanks for all the info on this thread.  The air filter cover fell off my '08 yesterday after 24K+ miles, yes while I was riding in traffic.  Amazingly the dealer says they have never heard of this probelm?!@$#

You can always tell when your within 200 miles of Sturgis. Shifters,covers,mirrors,lights,belts,saddlebags,chains,ect.ect.ect. one of the things you wont find now are generators, used to fairly common. Alternators just burn up.

My cover came off my '08 CVO Ultra somewhere in Kansas on I-70 while returning from Sturgis.  It was the anniversary style to match the Crystal Copper and Black '08 paint style.  Are these available from HD?  I know I can go back with something different but I really liked what came on the bike.

I just re-read this thread closer and will try the spacers/insulation remedy.  I have a new cover on order from HD.
