General photography discussion
« on: March 14, 2011, 10:43:29 PM »

(admins... if you think this'd be better in "Off Topic", my apologies)

All right, since I frequently get asked about my pics, gear, software, I figured I'd start up a separate thread for discussing photgraphy, to share the info I have, and get info from others.

I'm pretty much an amatuer myself, with no training or formal classes... just try and snoop around and let Google point me in the direction I need to go. Just like with bike stuff, everyone's got opinions on the best brand, camera, lens, software and so on... so while the pile of stuff I've bought and not found as effective as "I read on the net" isn't as big as my pile of seats, riding gear, and spare bike parts, it is growing all the time... lol

I'll just throw out a few posts from other threads that answer a lot of the questions i get, and we can all take it from there!

Here is my current list of gear:

Bodies:
Nikon D300s
Nikon D80

Lenses:
(all Nikkor)
70-200 2.8 VRII (paid <gulp> $2300!)  (http://www.dpreview.com/lensreviews/nikon_70-200_2p8_vrii_n15/)
18-70 3.5-4.5
18-200 3.5-5.6
18-55 3.5-4.5 (kit lens I got with D80... need to sell it)
55-200 4.5-5.6 (another lens I need to sell, since I got the 18-200)
and the low-light specialist, the 50mm 1.8

I just have a cheap flash, but that is my next investment, to pick up a good remote flash unit, to up my basketball shooting skills.

Crusty, can you give us any hints and suggestions on your photos?  What camera do you use? What settings?  Do you alter them in photoshop or another program? Man, they are really nice. The colors are so vivid and definite. Any help would be appreciated.

I really do appreciate all the compliments, and they inspire me to get better. I should make my own thread, but that would imply I "officially" knew what I was doing...  :coolblue: :P  I have done a lot of Googling, and reading around the 'net, but with ADD, me and reading don't get along so good, so I mostly just wing it. I really do want to get in a class, so I can learn the terms and techniques to get improve and actually KNOW what I'm doing (which helps when you try and repeat your success... lol).

I currently shoot with a Nikon D300s (http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikond300s/).
My older shots are taken with my D80 (http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/NikonD80/)

The lens I used yesterday is nothing exciting, an 18-70 3.5-?. (I am also trying to get better at shooting my daughter's HS basketball team and dropped $2300 on a NIkkor 70-200 2.8; photography gear gets expensive as quick as HD stuff...lol)

I use the bracketed mode on my camera to shoot 3/5/7 consecutive shots (tripod is ideal, but I shoot most of mine handheld... the 7 frames a second on the D300s help with that!) at different exposures. Then you post process with software that combines them into a High Dynamic Range (HDR) image (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-dynamic-range_imaging). Most HDR software can also take a single shot and digitially modify it to create similar effects.

I use Photomatix Pro (http://www.hdrsoft.com/) to do my HDR work. You can d/l the trial version, which will leave watermarks on your pics, but will elt you play with the software to get an idea how it works. (Just don't delete your original files, so when you upgrade to the paid version you can't go back and reprocess them without the watermark and end up having to use photoshop to get rid of them... don't ask me how I know... lol)

Then I finalize my processing using Adobe Lightroom 3 (http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshoplightroom/) Not cheap, but if you are a student or teacher, you can get it for under $100... thanks Adobe!)

I really do enjoy learning as I go... and with a bike this great to shoot, it helps! (But I have learned that the shark nose fairing is challenging, with the shadows and reflections it creates.)

Hope that made some sense... lol

You can't beat the Nikon for remote flash.

You already have the commander all you need are a strobe or 2 (or more)
The Nikon system really gives you a lot of control with the camera and remote strobes.

I use a pair of SB 800's. But the flash I use 90% of the time is the compact SB400
Small, easy to carry, decent output and it uses it's own batteries instead of the camera's battery.

:jack:  Crusty...is LR 3 significantly better than LR 2?  I'm currently using  LR 2 and NX Capture 2 (for better processing of RAW files).  I haven't dabbled in HDR much, but your photos make me want to go there.  I currently shoot a D300, and have narrowed my lenses down to (all Nikon) 10-24, 16-85 (a sweet little lens, and really nice range), and a 70-300VR.  Throw in the 50 1.8 for low light.  The 70-200 you just got is awesome, but I just don't need the fast glass at this point, but that should work great for your action shots.

Do you find that LR 3 imports RAW files "better" than LR 2?  The only reason I have NX 2 is because LR can't read the camera settings on a RAW file...does LR 3 do a better job of bring them in as shot with the proper import settings applied by Adobe?  This should probably be in a seperate thread, but your work is nice.  Check out some of my stuff here:  http://terrycrainphoto.photoshelter.com/

YOu've got some great shots! I need to get out & about more... I did buy a workshop from a local photographer who'll drag you around the Garden of the Gods for a few hours and teach you outdoor photgraphy stuff, so hopefully that'll up my game some!

I've only been playing around with this latest obsession for about 2 years... started by trying to get pics of my daughter's sports, so I got the D80, then the 70-200, and have just been messing around trying to learn. Scored a good deal on the D300s and a couple lenses on eBay... I LOVE the 3200 iso and the 7 frames per second!!!

I've got a 7 year old version of photoshop (version 7-something), but never really played with it much. I did the trial version of the NX2, but didn't really get a feel for it and found the Lightroom 3 beta, and used it until it expired, and then was so used to working with it (and happy with its noise reduction capability) that I bought the real thing... and thanks again to Adobe's student program, it was only $99!! SO I can't compare it to LR2. But I will say LR 3 has an NEF plugin, so it does fine with importing my pics in RAW.

Watch out who you share your HDR interest too... I've found that most of the old-school die hard photographers HATE it... lol  I don't get it... if you're going to do any post processing, then how can you pitch chit at someone using HDR software? Granted people get carried away with it, and I've been guilty of that myself... but it is just another tool to try and get your shots to express yourself. I think I have learned a lot about using it to enhance the shots (works great on the SERG, with all the shadows and light playing off the curves and the flake... hard to get all that in at one exposure.)

I've got the SB400 as well... but with the spring basketball season rolling around at the end of April, I'd like to start playing with a flash. On another photography board, I saw some great shots with a remote flash, allowing the shooter to go down to 800 iso and get some very clean shots. Even with the 70-200 2.8 I'm lucky to get down to 2200 in most gyms, and as good as LR 3 is, it is still hard to clean out the noise, without making them look too soft.

I've got a Nikon D300 that I bought when I moved up from the D200.  I also used to have the 18-200, which is probably the most versitile lens in the world, but sold it to get "better glass" that overlaps a bit so lens changes are less frequent.  I also sold my fantastic 200mm f/4 Macro lens recently, and I'll live to regret that decision. So now, I have the following gear all Nikon:

D300 w/MB10
50 1.8 D
10-24
16-85 VR (very sharp lens and an excellent landscape lens)
70-300 VR (all the reach I need at the moment, and much sharper than the previous versions in that range)
SB 600 Strobe (great bang for the buck)

I addition to that stuff:

Gitzo 1228 Carbon Fiber tripod (old version)
Acratec G2 Ball Head
Kirk Plate for the camera

...continued...the ball head is the Arca Swiss type (once you have that mount, nothing else will do).  For filters, I use B+W brand exclusively, mostly because of the quality of the glass, but also because the filter rings are made of brass rather than aluminum.  I have several camer bags, depending on where I'm going, and what I'm going to do.  All Lowepro:  Flipside 400, 300, Toploader AW60, and a small regular Lowepro Shoulder bag.

I've been doing this seriously since about '93...got "certified" through taking a couple of years worth of UAB Special Studies classes, which were all taught by local pros.  I've also done a couple of workshops, the best one being The Rocky Mountain School of Photography, where we spent a week in the Ouray/Silverton/Durango area with professional Jeep drivers who carried us up into the San Juan Mountains.  I started with an old F3hp, then N8008s, then N90s, and finally to an F5....all film cameras, of course.  I have thousands of slides and have scanned some of them with my Nikon 4000ED...used to shoot 90% of the time with Fuji Velvia, which is a highly saturated film with an ISO of 50, so everything was done on a tripod with remote release.  LOVE digital though, and it's a hell of a lot cheaper than shooting/developing 20 rolls of Velvia at a time.

If you haven't already, check out Nikonians, which is a website for Nikon owners/users.  Kind of like the CVO site for Nikons...you can learn a lot there.
I've also got a Canon G10 for my "backup", and walking around town type camera when I don't want to lug the big stuff...it's an amazing little camera, as long as you don't go above ISO400 (<200 is best).

Thanks Crusty,

I really think that this is a great way for all of us to share info as well as our pics. I do feel out of the loop a bit with me owning a Canon 40D. Oh well I will get over it.  :2vrolijk_21:

Thanks again,

Up until yesterday I was thinking about unloading my D300. But after Nikon's recent announcement I think it will just sit on the shelf.

There is the real potential that the Nikon high end DSLR's are history.

I missed that story. What are they saying. I dont like the sound of this considering I just pulled the pin on $30g's of Nikon equip. . I assume it has to do with the issues in Japan.
I have owned my own photography business for 16 years. I have shot with Canon equipment for over 20. Two months ago I dumped all my Canon gear(except my 200mm f1.8  ) and made the switch to Nikon. I had lenses ranging from 15 mm Fisheye to 400mm 2.8 and everything in between had a hard time getting rid of them because I had so much invested and knew I would take a beating on the sale. I had 6 Canon EOS 1D cameras from the original EOD 1D which was a great camera up to the Mark 3 and 4 which were garbage.
Bought a D3S and a D3x and some glass and a few SB 900's. Will collect more glass as I can afford it. Love this equipment and lo and behold the Nikon cameras focus ............ :2vrolijk_21:

Problem with Canon is in their infinite wisdom years ago they decided to make a change in lens mounts, instantly making all prior lens obsolete.

Nikon advantage is that even a 60 year old lens will twist on and work

Just about every Nikon lens made will fit on just about every Nikon SLR DX or FX.

These plant closings will have an impact on the very high end stuff, but most of the consumer/prosumer equipment is now made in Taiwan to Nikon Specs, though it could impact the actual glass manufacturing, as I'm not sure they make that in Taiwan.

I'm sure that any cameras (like a D300s replacement...D400) due to be replaced will be put on hold for some period of time.  This would include the replacements for the D3 series, which would be the D4 series.

Hopefully, this will not have a permanent impact on Nikon's bottom line.... :nervous:

Question for all the camera experts......as of last Sept (our 9 western states tour) I ride with my Nikon D60 hanging around my neck.  While I realize it's not in the same league as the cameras that you guys are talking about, it seemed to be a pretty good package deal at Costco at the time.

Anyway, I'm riding with it around my neck.  I keep the lens cap on it (unless I'm actually snapping pics on the fly.....which I do a lot of) but I'm sure at speed it's picking up dust, etc.  How much should I expect to pay to have it cleaned?

Also, being a total novice to the DSLR.....anything that I should know (no, I haven't read the book that came with it that's the owner's manual), any tips, etc. are appreciated.

"Nikon Sendai is Nikon's flagship DSLR plant, where the D700, D3x, and D3s are built. The anticipated D700 replacement and the upcoming D4 would also be manufactured there.."

Nikon is predominately a lens company that just happens to make cameras - as is Canon.

If you are talking about getting dust on the outside glass, just get a can of compressed air, give it a blast to remove dust and then use a lens cleaner solution and a cleaning cloth to clean the outside of the lens. After blowing off the dust apply the lens fluid to the center of the lens and in a circular motion wipe the lens surface starting in the middle and working your way out.
The beauty of the DSLR is the ability for the user to change lenses. This is where you will have the greatest chance to get dust on the sensor and in turn show up as black spots in the photos. Whenever you change lenses turn off the camera, The sensor will attract dust when it is powered up, point the camera lens mount down and change out the lens. Try to stay out of the wind if possible when changing lenses. You can send the camera out to Canon or Nikon for a cleaning but expect to pay anywhere from $50.00 to 100.00 each time you do this. Shipping is extra. That's the beauty of the point and shoot cameras is that they seldom have dust issues because you are not changing lenses unless it has dust issues from the factory.
I clean my own sensors and have done so for many years. Some new cameras have a feature that is a self cleaning sensor. This sends some sort of vibration through the sensor to dislodge dust. It works pretty well.
Check you manual to see if this feature is available.
I use a commercial product from a company called visible dust. It is a brush system to pick up dust using static from the brush. Works pretty well. For stubborn dust you may need to use a fluid like "Eclipse" fluid and a sensor cleaning tool. Maybe have a local camera store show you the ropes. It is not difficult you just want to make sure you do it right. There are specific steps that are to be taken. The sensor is located behind the mirror and to clean it the mirror must be raised.(Never touch the mirror) or anything else inside the body for that matter. Follow manual for instructions. It is worth the effort to learn how to clean the sensor your self as it can be a pain in the A$$ to send the camera out every time you see a speck on it.

If you have a 20 to 300 mm lens that does it all and you hardly remove the lenses you should have minimal issues with dust. Keep in mind that there may be dust from the factory and jostling a cameras may dislodge it and chances are it will end up on the sensor.

Duane I can't imagine anything happening in that region for a while....

I agree, and if they have a meltdown - maybe never.

But, since full frames are out of my price league it won't affect me to the same level as those using the FX.

True enough but I wonder how much R&D  from the high end cameras finds it's way into all of the camera products in one way or another. I think this will put the brakes on many offerings from Nikon and Canon, and maybe not just cameras. Watch the price of Nikon lenses in glasses, binoculars, rifle scopes, etc and all the products canon makes like copiers, scanners, medical equip go through the roof.

Some of you guys/gals have some really nice camera gear (evident of the Picture section  :2vrolijk_21:) and i'm curious if you actually carry and/or use this stuff on your road trips. And if you do, how much gear (lenses, flashes) do you carry along and what is your real preference? I personally carry a Nikon P90 in my saddle bag, my wife just got a Cannon PowerShot G12 which she lugs in her saddle bag. Both cameras are plain digital cameras and take awesome shots, although the G12 runs circles around the P90 but a few times i can surprise her with a little Photo Shop editing.  The Nikon DSLR cameras seem to be most popular here and the Canon PowerShots for the Digital cameras. I have no clue how to put together a poll thread here but it would be interesting to see what is most popular.   :nixweiss: :nixweiss:

Then on another note, my next carry-on road trip toy is going to be a Video Cam and after researching for last 6-months, i still have no clue what to get. My budget is $600 anyone have any suggestions here??   :nixweiss:

Anyway, I'm riding with it around my neck.  I keep the lens cap on it (unless I'm actually snapping pics on the fly.....which I do a lot of) but I'm sure at speed it's picking up dust, etc.  How much should I expect to pay to have it cleaned?

JC...unless you are seeing spots on the photos you create, post, or print, I would not be concerned with cleaning the camera.  Even the D60 is sealed well enough not to allow dust particles into the body of the camera...as mentioned, the time you are most likely to get dust in important places is when the lens is off the camera.  Also, I don't know what lenses you use while riding (I would guess just one zoom), but I personally would stay away from anything really long, as it would just get in your way.  IF you are looking for a new lens, I would highly recommend the Nikon 16-85 VR.  Having the vibration reduction settings would be most helpful in low light situations while riding (early morning/late afternoon).  This lens gives you the equivalent range 24-127 in a full frame camera (35mm film or FX in DSLR), and would likely be the only lens you'd ever need while riding.  It is quickly becoming my favorite lens.  If you'd like to look into getting something a little more compact, I can highly recommend the Canon G series Poweshots...the newest version being the G12.  This is an excellent camera...well built, capable of being manually overridden, makes files large enough to easily do a 16x20 print, and while not a shirt pocket size, it is easily a jacket pocket camera, but built solidly...it would remind you to some extent of an old rangefinder camera.  If I were going to upgrade my DSLR camera body, I'd take a look at the D3100 or D7000, but there's really nothing wrong with your D60 unless you need larger file sizes for larger prints.

The G12 is an excellent choice for carrying on the bike, IMO.  Also, my opinion is that Canon "point and shoots" run circles around Nikon at this time.  I have the older G10, and it is what I carry most of the time while on the bike, and also when on vacation when I want to carry something easy to use while walking around town, rather than lugging the bigger DSLR.  Now, having said that...if I know I'm going into an area thats going to merit me getting really serious about taking photos, the DSLR and a couple of lenses, polarizing filters, and even my Carbon Fiber Tripod and ball head will be along for the ride.  With today's zooms, a couple of lenses that cover wide angle to a longish telephoto is all you really need.  I am biased towards Nikon when it comes to DSLR's...nothing wrong with Canon, but I think Nikon has them beat in some areas that are important to me.

Video cams?  I can tell you what NOT to get...anything that records on a CD type medium.  Too much vibration on the bike for that.  Either the little tapes or directly to a card would be my choices there.  I have an older Sony Handycam DCR-HC48 with a wide angle attachment lens that does a good job recording rides while mounted on the handlebar with a RAM product I have.  A helmet cam is another good option to look at, depending on how serious you want to get with doing that kind of work.

Thanks a bunch rgantz and Terry! :2vrolijk_21:

Terry, my camera came with two lenses and I don't remember the numbers on either.  I only changed them a couple of times, when I first got the camera......simply because I didn't have room in the camera bag that came in the package deal, for the long lens.

And I also do remember that the shorter lense is a VR something or other and I rarely use the flash.  Just seems to take better pictures further away, after dark, if I don't use the flash.

So, only using one lense and having the VR lense are both pluses, for what I use the camera for.  No, no spots in the pictures but when I'm viewing the picture after I took it, I notice the bottom right corner of that window seems to be full of dust or something.  It's not an issue for me.  I just thought that having the camera strapped around my neck at highway speeds for thousands of miles......maybe I should get it cleaned once a year or something.  I hardly ever leave home without it, now.

I've even been expermenting with all the different settings, lately.

If you've got a VR lens, then you're good to go, and if you don't find yourself wanting a wider angle or wanting to reach out some distance, you really don't need wide angle or telephoto zoom.  The on camera flash (the one that pops up on top of the camera) is useless more than about 10 feet away, if it's totally dark.  However, even in the daytime, the flash can be a useful thing...for example:  You are taking a photo of someone/some object that is a few feet away against a brightly lighted background...in other words, pehaps the sun is behind your subject...then pop the flash up and use it as a fill light to light your subject, while still properly exposing for the background light as well.  It takes a little reading and playing around to set the flash to the right power output, but it can really make a difference in the photo.  We've all seen photos of a person standing against a sunlit background, and the person is barely distinquishable because the camera is fooled by the background and underexposes the subject (the person)...on the other hand, if you expose for the person, the background will be "blown out", meaning it will look too bright.  Using Flash in those situations, but using it in such a way so that you really can't tell flash was used, makes for a much better overall photograph.  The whole key with flash is to be able to do it well enough that people can't tell you used it when veiwing the photo.  It's worth learning a little bit about all that, IMO...today's cameras are really "smart"...the trick is to know when the camera might be fooled because of unusual lighting, but 90% of the time, the camera is probably smarter than you are.

If you're talking about the LCD on the back of the camera having a spot in the lower right corner, that's probably not the sensor being dirty, but could be a flaw with the display itself.  If you download the photo and it looks fine after downloading, then the LCD is just a minor bother.

What you have seems to be working well for you, so why change anything unless you want to get a lot more "serious" about photography in general...then the higher end camera bodies and lenses come into play, but be wary, you can sink a LOT of money in camera gear before you blink your eyes good.  I've spent tens of thousands of dollars on gear over the years, but currently have "fine tuned" my gear to suit 95% of my needs.

Good advice Terry
When I do workshops I also tell people not to get hung up on having the latest and greatest because you will go broke trying to keep up. Besides most cameras take unreal pix now anyway. The difference being all the bells and whistles that they offer.  It is different if you use it to make a living. Not up to speed on video so I cannot even make a suggestion there.

CVO
The G12 is a great unit to pack along and actually I rarely bring my DSLR cameras with me when I am on the road on the bike. I have a G10 that I take along. If I take a DSLR along I pack as light as possible...one lens and a flash unit. I have gotten lazy over the years. That being said bring anything that you are comfortable with and shoot lots. Last year on a ride in Utah I dropped a point and shoot Nikon Coolpix that I had with me and it smashed all over the pavement. Someone drove over the SD card before I could retrieve it and damaged the soldering inside it and we could not retrieve any pix from it.  DOH!!!! Good idea to have a few smaller cards and change them out so as to not have all your "eggs in one basket" as they say.

JC
I Think Terry's right about the rear LCD. One of my Canon cameras had a small shadow on the LCD on the back of the camera but it never affected the image because the sensor was fine. If it shows up on the image after downloading it may be as simple as a vignette from a lens hood not installed properly or possibly a sensor issue.

Thanks guys......for the tips.

Just got home from work.  My shorter lense is the Nikon DX, VR  18-55.  Not quite the lense that you mention Terry and that will probably be the one I get if I invest in another.....but for now, this one is working fine.

Yes, it's the LCD display on the back that shows a bunch of dust on the back of the camera but doesn't show up when I post the pics on here.

Oh yes Terry, I know about using the flash for fill in those situations that you mention where the background is brighter than what your object is.  Clear on that one and how it works.

What is the apature range of your 18-55 (3.5?)? Looks like the 16-85 is 3.5, so I wouldn't think buying a new lens for that minimal gain (55 up to 85) would be a good deal... but as I said, I'm just maiking it up as I go, so if I'm wrong, I'm sure TC will set me straight  :)

The 18-55 is a kit lens, although pretty good for a kit lens. And far superior to the crap Nikon use to use with film camera kits.
The 16-85VR is a far superior lens with similar specs and cost of the 18-200 VR
But - the 18-200 has been updated to the VR 2. I haven't seen any updates for the 16-85

The new 18-200 supposedly adds about 2 additional stops and a lock to keep the lens from "zooming" when you let the camera hang lens down.

Duane...agreed, the kit 18-55 is a decent lens.  I owned the 18-200 for several years, and if I just was able to choose one lens, it's a good choice, though a little big for general carrying around.  It's also a little soft from 135 out to 200...just on the edges.  It has always been VR2 though...it didn't say that on the lens, but it is.  The lock keeps the lens from creeping when carrying it around in the fully retracted position, but you can accomplish the same thing with a rubber band on the barrel.  I sold mine before the new edition came out and got the 16-85.  It's VR2 as well, though again, it does not say that on the lens.  They claim VR2 gets you 4 stops, but in practice, I've found 3 stops is about all I can really get while still getting 80% keepers...that number drops to about 30% keepers if I try to go 4 stops.  VR is the greatest thing since sliced bread though.

The reason for the 16-85 is that I found that 80% of my shots were between 18 and 100mm, but often found myself wanting just a tad wider...2mm does not seem like much, but in practice, it's pretty significant when at 16mm.  Also, on DX, IMO, portraits are best in the 50-85 range, so that was another good reason for the switch to the 16-85, plus, it really sharp throughout it's range, though it needs to be stopped down (higher F number) when at 16mm.  For landscapes, it is, IMO, an ideal lens.  If I shot a lot of portraits, I'd probably get the 85 1.8 to blow out the background a bit better, but for my type of shooting, I'm not generally concerned about Bokeh, and if I need to be concerned about that, I just use the great, but very inexpensive 50 1.8...a real bargain in the Nikon lineup.  If I want to get really creative, the 10-24 will get me there, but in reality, it only sees limited use...same with the 70-300 VR, though it makes a decent Macro lens when paired with the old Nikon 6T Diopter (they don't make it any more, and if you find one, it'll cost you)...even though the new 70-300 is a 67mm filter thread, a step down ring and the 62mm 6T works just fine, with no vingetting.  Extension rings will get you there too, with the Kenko AF rings being the best, again IMO.  But the 6T is easier.  Canon still offers excellent diopters at 72mm, which can always be used with stepup rings.

All the 2.8 or faster lenses are great glass, if you need it, but you pay for it both in price and weight/size.  The new 70-200 VR2 is a fantastic lens, as is the older 24-70 2.8, but they are beasts to carry around.  But, if you need the speed, those are two great ones.  Sigma now offers some great lenses in 2.8 glass, from the reviews I've read.  If you shoot sports action, fast glass is absolutely necessary...or concerts, etc.
In good light, the G10 is hard to beat, and I hear the G12 is way better at higher ISO's (up to about 800, where the G10 get a lot of noise).

OK, technically they are both VRII - but only one is labeled with a II. The newer version (gold "VR" letters at the top of the barrel) has the lens lock and supposedly different coatings on the glass.

Original (AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR)

New    (AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR) II

Both VRII

Although, the new version has it labeled on the lens as follows:

AF-S NIKKOR 18-200mm 1:3.5-5.6GII ED

Agreed...it probably does have the nano coating, and definitely has the lock feature, although it is still not critically sharp at the longer end, but that doesn't matter, because it's all on the edges.

anyone gonna try and get some good SUPER MOON shots this evening? I'm gonna try and get up in the mountains to get a cool shot.

Hadn't even considered trying to work the bike into a shot until I came here to post. hmmmmm  would definitely be a lighting challenge!!!

It'll be cloudy here tonight.  You could try two shots...place the moon where you want it for one shot, with the moon fairly large, then take another of the bike, perhaps using some off camera flash, or "paint with light".  Then combine the layers in photoshop, if you have it.

It'll be cloudy here tonight.  You could try two shots...place the moon where you want it for one shot, with the moon fairly large, then take another of the bike, perhaps using some off camera flash, or "paint with light".  Then combine the layers in photoshop, if you have it.

good idea! Wi'll see what I can come up with

You suck for living in Colorado  ;)  I LOVE it out there...only been there four times, and none of those times were long enough.  With the housing market the way it is now, I'm pretty much stuck here in Alabama for a few years, which isn't a bad thing.  You just get a different kind of shot here when out doing photography...not many wide open spaces, and everything is green in late Spring/Summer.

lol

I do love it here... gotta be around the mountains. Spent 6 years living in Missouri... was a long 6 years, but at least there was the bass fishing... lol

We still have no idea where we're gonna retire; wife doesn't want to be stuck in snow, but I gotta have 4 (or at least 3.5) seasons and mountains. Only got 4.5 years to get it figured out, so we better figure it out soon.  :-\

Didn't get any good moon shots... clouds screwed it up, and the couple shots I might have gotten, I screwed them up by not using the remote shutter release.  :nixweiss:

Did do some hiking yesterday and tried to get some cool shots of ice in a waterfall, but most of the time, they don't turn out as cool as they do in my head... so we'll see when I get process them... lol

You guys are taking some great pics with some expensive equipment. Until June of 2010 I was still stuck old school using 35mm film. Well Circuit City was "going out of business" so I fought thru the crowds and got a good deal on a Nikon D80 w/18-135mm VR and I also got a 55-200mm VR f/4.5 for my birthday. Man I have a lot to learn, the D80 is smarter than me and can do a lot more things than I know how to do. I have read the manual and the Nikon book "How to"(forgot the name) several times. I am getting better. Oh I also bought some UV filters. I have been taking it on our rode trips but not wearing it around my neck.
I have a question:If I was only going to buy one "photoshop/software" tool what should it be? I pretty much have just been downloading my pics and going with them however they come out. I enjoy this topic even thou sometimes it is over my head. Thanks for the info.
Crusty the pic of your yellow bike really POPS!
Edit:Just read OP again, Crusty, you have three different software programs that you use to edit pics? Do you use all three each time? Sorry for the dumb questions.

i would recommend adobe lightroom 3, it not only edits multiple brands but is a very strong cataloging program.  The Nikon products are very good but unliked by many. for critical editing i use Nikon Nx
much easier to use than layers in photoshop

I don't have a lot of experience, but I'd agree, if I had 1 program to post process with LR3 seems to be a great all around program. Its ability to reduce noise in high ISO shots is amazing!

Photomatix is only for merging bracketed shots into HDR images (or manipulating a single file). That is what really sets my bike shots apart, drawing the different light levels into a single image.

I was going to get rid of my D80 when I got my D300s, but being the rookie I am, I am still very intimidated at taking "routine" shots with my D300, while I enjoy learning how to make the camera work for me, I'll admit, sometimes in a rush, it is comforting to be able to set the D80 to auto and trust you'll get a good image you can work with. I'm just not educated/experienced enough to trust myself to put together a good shot in a pinch, trying to remember all the settings to adjust.

LR 3 would be the generic program to give you the most band for your buck.  The D80 had some problems, but nothing that cannot be overcome by some knowledge of how the metering system works....you just have to compensate a bit with the D80...the D300 can be a point and shoot, if you want.

I use my D-60 as a point and shoot more often than not.  I wear it around my neck while riding and take many picks on the fly at 80 mph.

We rode about 600 miles today and I took a few shots of the mountains down here in Ariz. as the sun was setting this evening.  But have to wait till I get home.  I don't have the ability to down load them with this HP Mini laptop. :nixweiss:

I'm technology challenged all the way around.....photograpy, computers, phones.....it doesn't matter, I'm at the back of the class. :nervous:

Enjoy the D200, it was my favorite Nikon, mine was stolen so i upgraded to the D300 then D3s. Got more useable pictures straight out of the D200 then the others. the upgrades forced me to take some classes and go on some of Popular Photography Mentor series workshops, great excuse for a bike trip.
cheers

Thought it might be fun/interesting to post a few pics that we've taken, with the shooting information, just to see some stuff that is not motorcycle related.

Here's an old cabin in Cades Cove, Great Smoky Mountain National Park.  Shot Jan '10, Nikon D300, Nikon 16-85VR @16mm, F/13, 1/13th shutter speed, Gitzo CF Tripod w/Acratech G2 Ballhead.  Tweaked in NX2.

Most of my RAW settings for the camera have the saturation bumped up slightly...NX2 is the only software that reads the settings from the camera.  I shot Velvia film for a long time, so for most outdoor things, I bump the saturation a bit, either in camera, in PP, or both.

I'm still trying to find the happy medium for the saturation with both the D300 and 7000
+1 doesn't seem to be enough and +2 is too much for my liking.

I use +1 for one of my Custom settings which I use for landscapes, etc.  I use another Custom setting that is "neutral".  My sharpening is generally set to about 5 in the camera.  Those are for RAW photos, in 14 bit mode, lossless compressed, and another setting for uncompressed.  If I need more than that, I do it in PP either in NX2 or LR2.  No Adobe product will read the in camera settings, but as you know, you can import with one of Adobe's pre-sets, which work pretty well.  NX2 gives me one feature I like, and that is a color control point that really works well for saturating/desaturating particular things in the photo...if I then send the file to LR, I do it as a TIFF file.  Which program I use depends on the photo to a great extent.

Previous versions were horrible - so I wasn't going to even bother loading it. Just need some more hours in the day now.

The problem is "what" PP software do you buy if you are not making money with the work?
My daughter has become pretty good with Adobe - but she still lives in the UK and can't help me much.

I think you will find that the D300s will be your go-to camera, once you get used to it.  I've never had a D80, but from things I've read, that particular body had some issues with the metering system.  Not that it didn't work, it just worked differently than prior bodies, and was not well received with Nikon owners.

If you don't already know about this guys site, check it out:  http://www.bythom.com/index.htm

He does a lot of real life reviews of mostly Nikon stuff.  He also has EXCELLENT instructional CD's for the various Nikon bodies, and they are written in such a way that you will actually use some of the settings he recommends.  They are PDF files, so you can print them if you want.  Money well spent, IMO.

Previous versions were horrible - so I wasn't going to even bother loading it. Just need some more hours in the day now.

The problem is "what" PP software do you buy if you are not making money with the work?
My daughter has become pretty good with Adobe - but she still lives in the UK and can't help me much.

Yep...View is a watered down version.  There are some things I like about it though...however, if I could only have one PP software program, it would be Lightroom, by Adobe.  I have V. 2 but they now have V.3...you can download a trial for free.  Overall, it is probably the best PP software out there for several reasons...first, it's like "photoshop lite" in some of the things it can do; it has (v.3) really good noise reduction algorithms; it has most camera bodies/lenses covered in the application; and finally, it is probably the very best cataloging software out there, and it never touches your original file, unless you tell it to.  Full blown Photoshop is just too much for me to learn...you could spend a lifetime and never learn everything it can do.  Lightroom contains most everything you need to do what you are going to do with an image.  The only downside compared to NX2 is it does not read in camera settings...Nikon will not give their "secrets" away to Adobe, so everyone has to backwards engineer their software to get close to what the Nikon bodies can do in camera.  Adobe comes really close with some of their import pre-sets.  LR is quickly becoming the "standard" by which everything else is measured, IMO.

How about lens perspective corrections? Interesting on the Nikon side. The new 7000 has perspective correction built in. Bit hard to see what you are doing sometimes using a 3" screen.

The only downside compared to NX2 is it does not read in camera settings...Nikon will not give their "secrets" away to Adobe, so everyone has to backwards engineer their software to get close to what the Nikon bodies can do in camera.

Which settings are you referring to, image settings or camera settings? And if camera setting will NX2 allow you to set camera setting and then download to the body?

Full blown Photoshop is just too much for me to learn...you could spend a lifetime and never learn everything it can do.

And then they upgrade the software  :drink:

I agree that lightroom 3 is my favorite overall processor, comming from Capture NX2, it was easy to learn just does not have the control points and camera settings. If I want to keep the in camera view i import into Lightroom 3 then open the original raw file from lightroom using capture NX2 make any changes to the camera settings, use my controll points then export as a tiff back into lightroom where the new tiff photo shows up right along side the raw file.  One of the Nikon Pros i had a chance to work with uses this method also so that he can keep the Digital lighting settings from the camera.
cheers

Pretty sure it does the camera/lens perspective info, and I know it reads camera settings, but it does not read image settings you have set in the camera banks.  The biggest thing with NX2 is the control point function....it's really nice.  As mentioned, the great thing about LR is that it is non-destructive to your original file.  Part of it is just a database/library function...but it really helps you find photos easily.  And, it's a really powerful editing software in it's own right.  It's really all 90% of people need, unless you do HDR, or like to do layers, etc.  The great thing is that it takes a lot of Plug-ins, if you want/need them.
