10 things to do on West USA coast
« on: March 01, 2017, 03:58:56 AM »

Hello,

My girlfriend and I will have holidays in US during this summer.
Road trip from LA to ??? and return to LA...

Ok we've got plenty of books, roadbooks, etc... but in your opinion, what are the best things do do in this Biiiiiig area (LA, SF, Sequoia national forest, Death Valley, etc...)?
Do you have some good road trip to share ?

Thanks,
Jeremie

How long....how many days?  What month?

I would consider putting Yosemite National Park, Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks and maybe Death Valley.  Much more to see and do if you were flying in to San Francisco or Oakland.....Nor Cal has more to offer.

Here's a ride that we did a few months back, leaving from San Diego.... https://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=109941.0

A trip up highway 1 & 101 from SoCal to Santa Cruz is a nice trip...Wouldn't venture much farther north unless you like bay area traffic.  Good luck and have fun!

For one month trip, here are a few:
LA
Oatman, Arizona on old US 66
Grand Canyon, Arizona
Bonneville Salt Flats, Utah
Craters of the Moon, Idaho
Washington State Route 14
Olympic National Park
Highway 1, 101 down the coast
Crater Lake National Park, Oregon
Redwood National Park, California
California Route 36
Virginia City, Nevada
Yosemite, Sequoia
Death Valley and Rhoylite ghost town and Scottys Castle if it is repaired by the time you come
Trona Pinnacles, California
LA

And the temperature in the Mojave Desert in Southern California will be 40-45c in July and August. The coastal traffic you can compare to your south of France towards the end of September going north. Inland, the traffic is not so bad except for the big cities.

Hwy. 1 is closed just south of Big Sur and will be for at least a year.....according to the news reports.  The hillsides slid off in to the ocean in several places, taking out bridges, etc.

Lake Tahoe would be easy to see on your way to Reno, Nevada and Virginia City, Nevada.

Las Vegas will be really hot during that time.

Hearst Castle is on Highway 1 just north of the LA area.

San Francisco is worth seeing, and you could visit Carmel and Monterey on that trip.

Let me add a few more miles for you guys.  Take highway 101 all the way through Washington State.  Then tour the San Juan Islands by state ferry, get off in Everett, then take the North Cascades Highway east.  Unbelievable scenery that will never be forgotten.  South through the Inland Empire and through Oregon and Northern California and the Sierra Nevada range should take up quite a bit of your time.  Have a great trip.
